Observations on the post-transcriptionally modified nucleotides in the 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid.

The 16S (18S) ribosomal ribonucleic acids from a number of organisms were screened for the presence of (some of) the post-transcriptionally modified oligomers found in Escherichia coli 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid. All prokaryotic 16S species contained all of the modified oligomers tested, with the sole exception that one such oligomer was missing in Alcaligenes faecalis. The post-transcriptional modifications in all of these oligomers except one appear to occur at the later stagesin ribosomal maturation.

Bubble detector characterization for space radiation.

In light of the importance of the neutron contribution to the dose equivalent received by space workers in the near-Earth radiation environment, there is an increasing need for a personal dosimeter that is passive in nature and able to respond to this neutron field in real time. Recent Canadian technology has led to the development of a bubble detector, which is sensitive to neutrons, but insensitive to low linear energy transfer (LET) radiation. By changing the composition of the bubble detector fluid (or "superheat"), the detectors can be fabricated to respond to different types of radiation. This paper describes a preliminary ground-based research effort to better characterize the bubble detectors of different compositions at various charged-particle accelerator facilities, which are capable of simulating the space radiation field.

Sensory deprivation in young children.

The importance of the role of intentional movement and active exploration in the development of a child's knowledge concerning his body, his movement and his surrounding is recognized. Senoristasis is defined and the concept applied to deprivation studies with animal and human subjects. It is suggested that the principle can be used to explain behavioural patterns found in two groups of children who may suffer from sensory deprivation; namely those who live in environments which provide insufficient stimulation and those who lack the necessary mobility to explore the environment in which they live. The importance in a young child's development of a rich sensory environment and opportunities for exploration are stressed.

Structuring movement experiences for pre-school children.

It is proposed that a conceptual framework should be used as a basis for the provision of movement experiences for young children. Developmental levels and classifications of movement are considered in order to structure environments that provide suitable opportunities for self-initiated movement for pre-school children.

Hi-tech education: teleconferencing in a hospital setting.

The video teleconference is the educational tool of the future, but it is not as simple as setting a student in a dark room and turning on a machine. Staff development educators will want to use the ideas in this article to initiate, market, and adapt the teleconference to fit the student's real educational needs.

Phase I study of ICRF-187 using a daily for 3 days schedule.

ICRF-187, the enantiomer of ICRF-159 formulated for iv use, was administered to 23 patients in a phase I clinical trial. The dose ranged from 500 to 1500 mg/m2 every day for 3 days and was repeated every 28 days. The toxic effects included moderate to severe leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, which recovered by the 21st day of a treatment cycle. Myelosuppression was more severe in patients with prior nitrosourea treatment. Nonmyelosuppressive toxic effects included nausea and vomiting, transient elevations in liver function tests, alopecia, and increased urinary clearances of iron and zinc. The starting dose for phase II trials should be 1250 mg/m2 daily for 3 days repeated at 21-day intervals.
