Angle closure glaucoma precipitated by labour.

Acute angle closure glaucoma generally occurs in older hypermetropic individuals, precipitated by pupillary dilation. However it is often forgotten that it can occur in younger people and that it does not occur solely as a result of the use of mydriatics or normal pupillary dilation in response to darkness. It is recognised that it can occur during or shortly after a surgical procedure done under either spinal or general anaesthetic. We describe a case of acute angle closure occurring in a 37-year-old woman, precipitated by labour. To our knowledge no such case has been described in the literature.

Nd:YAG laser augmented pneumatic retinopexy.

We present the first ten consecutive cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment treated by one surgeon using pneumatic retinopexy with Nd:YAG laser disruption of vitreoretinal adhesions. In nine cases the retina has remained reattached, after a follow-up period of 11 to 18 months. The use of the Nd:YAG laser to disrupt vitreoretinal adhesions at the sites of retinal tears is discussed.

Cyclic variation in onset of central retinal vein occlusion.

We studied the seasonal incidence of onset of symptoms of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in 105 patients over a 5-year period. Their onset showed a significant cyclic variation (p less than 0.01), being most frequent in the months September through to February. We believe this seasonal variation may in part reflect seasonal changes in haemostasis and retinal perfusion, though other unidentified factors play a significant role.

Adenovirus type 8 keratoconjunctivitis--an outbreak and its treatment with topical human fibroblast interferon.

An outbreak of keratoconjunctivitis is described which involved at least 186 people; adenovirus type 8 was identified in 50 of the cases. Topical human fibroblast interferon was assessed in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in which 34 patients participated. Seventeen of the 34 trial patients yielded adenovirus type 8; three were infected with adenovirus type 7. The outbreak was curtailed by control of infection measures: principally careful hand-washing by medical personnel between cases and by discouraging attendance of new cases at the Eye Infirmary. Consequently the trial numbers are small. In addition there was a wide interpatient variation in the severity of infection. Therefore it was not possible to make any statistically valid conclusions concerning the recovery rate of patients receiving interferon or placebo.
