To evaluate the effectiveness of Oxyphenbutazone as an anti-inflammatory agent, a double-blind study of Oxyphenbutazone and a placebo in a group of 42 patients who had nasal cosmetic operations involving osteotomy was carried out. The observations included direct objective measurement of the width of the palpebral fissure after operation, grading of the severity of postoperative edema and ecchymosis from photographs, and observations by the patients regarding the clearing of the postoperative discoloration. It appeared from the results of these observations that Oxyphenbutazone is not effective in preventing postoperative edema in such operations or in promoting more rapid resolution of postoperative edema. It did appear to enhance the clearing of postoperative periorbital ecchymosis.
If the height of a prepubertal child is measured at one time and again a year later, any decision about the child's growth should be based on the distributions of the later height and height velocity conditional on the value of the initial height. The standard charts for height and height velocity derived by Tanner, Whitehouse and Takaishi (TWT) (1966) can be used in this context provided a correction is subsequently made, either by calculation or by reference to a suitable table. Moreover, the data provided by TWT, on which the charts are based, can be used to show that, over a certain age-range, the correlation between successive 12-month heights of a child is greater than 0.9 and approaches 1 with increasing age. On the other hand, the correlation between the height at any age and the velocity over the ensuing 12 months is low, while the correlation between two successive 12-month velocities is so low as to make it reasonable to treat them as independent. One phenomenon that has been much observed is that a child who grows along the third centile for height seems to grow along the 25th-30th centile for velocity. This effect follows when a conditional velocity is plotted onto a chart giving the distribution of an unconditional velocity. There is, moreover, a slight regression back to the population mean from any age to the next; this has little effect on the mean height but a noticeable effect on the mean velocity.

The authors present a preliminary progress report on their investigations dealing with the development of an implanted electronic laryngeal prosthesis system. Their initial observations indicate success in the design and fabrication of the implantable, retropharyngeal transducer and secondary induction coil elements. The surgical procedure for implantation is described, and the complications encountered during the first thirteen procedures are reported. These complications included five seromas, one postoperative abscess, one partial wound breakdown secondary to animal-inflicited traumn, and two anesthetic deaths at the time of follow-up radiographic procedures. Additional observations are presented regarding the acoustical output of the transducer in air and after implantation. Projections are made concerning the use of this laryngeal prosthesis system in human patients for vocal rehabilitation after total laryngectomy.
Stenosis of the larynx and trachea is an unfortunate sequel to many thermal injuries. Numerous surgical techniques have been developed for correction of such problems, many involving use of a tracheal T-tube. We report a serious complication attributed to the use of such a tube. Factors contributing to this complication are analyzed and methods for avoiding similar near-catastrophes discussed.

When compared to Caucasians, diabetes mellitus and its complications are more prevalent among African Americans. Locus of control and social support were suggested as correlates of diabetes outcomes and health care practices that might have clinical implications. A sample of 24 African Americans and 80 Caucasians with Type II diabetes completed questionnaires and gave venous blood specimens. African Americans had significantly higher glycohemoglobin values (p = .049) and BMI values (p = .048). African Americans also took fewer doses of medication (p = .046) and tested their blood glucose less frequently (p = .062). Correlation patterns for the two groups differed as well. Social support variables were more often related to health care practices and outcomes for African Americans than for Caucasians. The findings indicate that nursing interventions resulting in increased social support could be especially effective for African Americans with Type II diabetes.
