Schizophrenia in British Afro-Caribbeans: two debates confused?

The concept and aetiology of schizophrenia remain controversial issues. Epidemiological studies reveal considerable variations in rates of diagnosed cases between groups. British Afro-Caribbeans show high rates. At the same time, their psychiatric experience is marked by a high level of conflict with the psychiatric services. The two debates--that surrounding the concept of schizophrenia, and that concerning the psychiatric experiences of British Afro-Caribbeans--need to be separated so that each receives appropriate consideration. Studies based on the experiences of people diagnosed as schizophrenic may confuse rather than advance the first debate if due care is not paid to the reliability of the diagnosis. The second debate has consequences for the development of psychiatric services. Further unaddressed questions referring to the mental health of ethnic minorities are suggested.

Measuring the rising tide. How many dementia cases will there be by 2001?

Numerous surveys have attempted to estimate the prevalence of dementia. Despite difficulties of measurement, evidence suggests figures may be lower than is generally realised. Factors which are likely to affect prevalence rates are discussed. Forthcoming changes in the demography of old age indicate that increases in the prevalence of dementia may have been seriously underestimated.

Marriage and neurosis in a modern residential suburb: an application of the Ryle Marital Patterns Test.

The Ryle Marital Patterns Test measures the affection and domination aspects of marriage. Its original administration illustrated a partial association between poor marital adjustment (as measured by low affection scores and non-egalitarian domination scores) and neuroticism (as measured by CMI score). The present paper confirms these associations using a group of suburban women defined as neurotic by their GP. Related studies suggest similar patterns.
