The separation between open and closed circular DNA in buoyant CsCl gradients containing intercalating dyes depends on the superhelix density of the closed form. These separations are about 1.8 times larger with propidium iodide than with ethidium bromide. The superhelix densities of mitochondrial DNA from HeLa cells and Lytechinus pictus eggs appear to be about two thirds that of mitochondrial DNA from rat and rabbit liver.

Bringing new medicines to the market depends on the rapid discovery of new and effective drugs, often initiated through the biological testing of many thousands of compounds in high-throughput screening (HTS). Mixing compounds together into pools for screening is one way to accelerate this process and reduce costs. This paper contains both theoretical and experimental data which suggest that careful selection of compounds to be pooled together is necessary in order to reduce the risk of reactivity between compounds within the pools.
Recovery ward nurses have often been viewed as the poor relations of theatre nurses. However, these nurses need the skills to care for highly dependent patients who have undergone both surgical and anaesthetic procedures. This article describes training for recovery ward nurses at the author's hospital.
