[Biosynthesis of macromolecules of the intercellular matrix in aorta organ culture. Influence of the age of the animal].

Rabbit aorta organ cultures were used as a model for the study of the modifications of the rate of biosynthesis of intercellular matrix macromolecules with age. Aortas of new born (100 g), young (400 g) and adult (2 kg) rabbits were maintained in culture for several weeks. 14C-lysine is incorporated in all the macromolecular fractions of the aortas, even in polymeric elastin. The change with age of the distribution of proteins of the aorta-explants in successive extracts obtained by a "chemical dissection" procedure and the decrease of their specific radioactivity wtih age enabled us to characterise biochemically the "aging program" of the arterial wall.

Effect of corynebacterium parvum on bone marrow cell cultures (38557).

The effect of C. parvum on in vitro colony-forming cell was evaluated. A single ip injection of the vaccine had no effect during the first 4 hr either on colony stimulating factor or on colony-forming cells. The enhancement of the colony-forming capacity of the bone marrow by C.parvum occurred after two injections of the vaccine within 48 hr. The stimulation of colony formation by C. parvum was time related function and occured 5 days after the initiation of the cultures. The results of this study indicate that C. parvum appears to be stimulant of bone marrow cells capable of proliferation and may be used as a valuable adjuvant against myelosuppressive agents.

[Study of anti-macrophage serum and of its effect on antibody formation].

A specific anti-macrophage serum (AMS) has been obtained by immunizing rabbits with mouse peritoneal exudate cells and after repeated absorption with mouse erythrocytes, thymocytes and splenic lymphocytes. A comparative study of the cytotoxic activities of this serum on macrophages, thymocytes and lymph node cells, before and after absorption, showed that macrophage posses antigens which are common to both thymic and lymph node lymphocytes, and other antigens which are in common with lymph node lymphocytes but absent on thymocytes, as well as antigens being particular to macrophages. The absorbed sera had a definite cytotoxic effect on macrophages in vitro. This effect was observed when complement was added immediately or 4 hours after incubation with serum. It was lost after 24 hours. An inhibitory effects of AMS on phagocytosis in vivo has also been observed, which disappeared after one day. Antibody production in vivo was only moderately affected by a pretreatment with AMS. However, addition of AMS to spleen cell cultures stimulated with sheep red blood cells inhibited the appearance of hemolytic plaque forming cells.

A report on six months experience of committee for the control of abortion.

During the first six months experience of a committee for the control of abortions, within the framework of Kupat Holim (Workers' Sick Fund of 'Histadrug' in Israel), 70 pregnant women sent by their physicians appeared before the committee for the interruption of their pregnancies. The reasons brought before the committee were of a medical, genetic, psychiatric or social nature. Discussed here are the socio-psychiatric cases, under the heading of the country of origin, age of the women, their cultural background and social situation of their families. Some conclusions are drawn in connection with the motivations which seem to have determined the positive or negative position of the committee and some possible implications are discussed concerning the legislation of the whole subject.
