The fact that large areas of medical research have excluded women from studies and clinical trials has been criticised by many. It is also seldom mentioned in textbooks that the two sexes are biologically different. A series of examples of known differences between the sexes are given, as well as their biological and psychological implications for medical scientific theory and treatment. These examples are used to illustrate how incorrect treatment and discrimination of both women and men may take place, if the sex of the patient is not taken into account.
Review of all of the abortion consultations from 1986 revealed that 46 of the young women under the age of 18 years utilised the possibility of applying for abortion without permission from their parents which the Danish legislation on termination of pregnancy in 1973 permits. Forty-two of the young women were granted permission for abortion without permission from the parents as it was considered that the relationship between the girl and her parents would otherwise deteriorate. This was not considered to be the case in the four girls for whom application for termination of pregnancy was refused. This material, which is focussed on a problem which has not previously been illustrated, is too limited to permit drawing of any conclusions but there is no information about whether the requirement of parental permission is beneficial or deleterious for the parent/daughter relationship. Relevant investigations are required.

In 1986, 595 women applied for termination of pregnancy after the twelfth week of pregnancy in Denmark. Permission for termination was given in 519 cases. The late terminations of pregnancy constituted 2.6% of the total number. Women who apply for termination of pregnancy after the twelfth week of pregnancy are younger and socially more stressed than the remainder of the women who obtain termination of pregnancy. Young age in the women and medical errors are important factors in connection with exceeding of the twelve week limit. If the number of late abortions is to be reduced, particular attention must be focussed on these factors.

A total of 295 patients, 152 women and 143 men, aged 18-70 years, were admitted to a psychiatric department during a period of three months. They were interviewed about their occupational conditions, the background for admission and help desired. Thirty-three women and 66 men were unemployed and half of these had been unemployed for over one year. The unemployed patients stated that misuse of alcohol or medicine was the reason for admission more frequently than the remainder of the patients. Half of the patients stated that unemployment contributed to admission to hospital but only 6% stated that this was the primary cause. Unemployed men desired employment most of all whereas the women desired improved social network. Three case reports are presented to illustrate the interaction between unemployment, stress at work and vulnerability and these illustrate the significances of the individuals factors for the nature of the relevant suitable help.
