Neuropeptides in spinal cord injury: comparative experimental models.
The possible role of endogenous opioids in the pathophysiology of spinal cord injury was evaluated utilizing a variety of experimental models and species. In the cat, we have shown that beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity was increased in plasma following traumatic spinal injury; such injury was associated with a decrease in spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) which was reversed by the opiate receptor antagonist naloxone. Naloxone treatment also significantly improved functional neurological recovery after severe injury. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), possibly through its "anti-endorphin" actions, was even more effective than naloxone in improving functional recovery in the cat. In a rat model, utilizing a similar trauma method, TRH proved superior to naloxone in improving SCBF after injury. In addition, naloxone at high doses attenuated the hindlimb paralysis produced by temporary aortic occlusion in the rabbit. The high doses of naloxone required to improve neurological function after spinal injury suggest that naloxone's actions, if opiate receptor mediated, may be mediated by non-mu receptors. Dynorphin, an endogenous opioid with a high affinity for the kappa receptor, produced hindlimb paralysis following intrathecal administration in rats. Taken together, these findings suggest that endogenous opioids, possibly acting at kappa receptors in the spinal cord, may serve as pathophysiological factors in spinal cord injury.
Milk consumption and growth in a marsupial arboreal folivore, the common ringtail possum, Pseudocheirus peregrinus.
This study examines the milk consumption and growth energetics of the smallest arboreal folivore in Australia, Pseudocheirus peregrinus. Mass increase was sigmoidal, and young ceased sucking milk between 27 and 30 wk (mean = 29.3 +/- 1 wk). This length of lactation was 129% of that predicted allometrically from data for other marsupials. The mean Gompertz constant (0.01) calculated for seven young suggests that P. peregrinus has a slow rate of growth compared with other marsupial species. Milk intake was measured with isotopic turnover techniques. The estimated total milk energy yield (11.9 MJ kg-1) for a ringtail possum suckling two young was similar to that of the only other marsupial herbivore for which data are available (Macropus eugenii). However, peak milk energy output (154.4 kJ kg-0.75 d-1) was lower than that in other herbivores. The body mass accrued from milk consumption by young ringtail possums at various stages of lactation was similar to that of other marsupials, suggesting that the slow rate of growth in this species is a result of a limited rate of supply of milk energy from the mother and not an inefficient conversion of milk energy in the young.

Degree and diploma student nurse satisfaction levels.
AIM: The objective of this study was to identify differences between satisfaction levels of diploma and degree students on different branches of a common foundation programme. METHOD: Questionnaires were completed by 315 diploma and degree student nurses undertaking a common foundation programme at different intervals during training. RESULTS: Questionnaire responses showed different satisfaction levels in the three different branches. Mental health and child branch students were more aware of organisational problems than adult branch students. More child branch students were of the opinion that there were problems with placement preparation but gave teaching modules and lectures higher ratings. Mental health students were most dissatisfied with placement preparation and gave teaching modules and lectures lower ratings. CONCLUSION: The results provide data in support of the argument that students on child and mental health branches find the CFP less well organised for them and that degree students are more satisfied with the current standard of teaching and personal support.

Prodrug-activated gene therapy: involvement of an immunological component in the "bystander effect".
The integration and expression of the herpes simplex virus type 1 thymidine kinase (HSV1-TK) gene in localized tumors results in tumor regression after the administration of the specific nucleoside analogue ganciclovir (GCV). Although only 10% to 20% of the tumor cells take up the HSV1-TK gene, the neighboring cells also die, a phenomenon termed "bystander effect.". In the present study, coinjection of the MC26 mouse colon carcinoma cell line and the HSV1-TK expressing retroviral packaging cell line followed after 7 days by the intraperitoneal administration of GCV resulted in almost total tumor regression in the immunocompetent BALB/c mice but not in immunocompromised athymic BALB/c mice. This suggested a strong cell-mediated immune component to the bystander effect.
Creating a population-based linked health database: a new resource for health services research.
As the availability of both health utilization and outcome information becomes increasingly important to health care researchers and policy makers, the ability to link person-specific health data becomes a critical objective. The integration of population-based administrative health databases has been realized in British Columbia by constructing an historical file of all persons registered with the health care system, and by probabilistically linking various program files to this 'coordinating' file. The linkages have achieved a high rate of success in matching service events to person-specific registration records. This success has allowed research projects to be proposed which would otherwise not have been feasible, and has initiated the development of policies and procedures regarding research access to linked data. These policies and procedures include a framework for addressing the ethical issues surrounding data linkage. With continued attention to confidentiality issues, these linked data present a valuable resource for health services research and planning.
