Factor analysis of craniofacial morphology in complete bilateral cleft lip and palate.

The lateral roentgencephalograms of 29 children with repaired complete bilateral clefts of the lip and palate (BCLP) were compared with those of an equal number of non-cleft children matched for age (+/- 0.9 yr.) and sex. Of 21 spatial, angular, and linear measurements used to evaluate craniofacial skeletal morphology, 11 showed significant differences between the groups. Using factor analysis, covariation between variables was reduced to a set of six factors: I cranial base; II mandible; III palate; IV lower face; V nasomaxillary-pharyngeal complex; VI clivus. The six-factor solution accounts for 91.7 percent of the variance. Factors II, III, and V provide the best discrimination between BCLP and noncleft individuals.

[Alternating ECG changes in dystrophia myotonica (Curschmann-Steinert)].

It is reported on a 39-year-old patient who revealed pathological ECG-findings of the most different kind during several years. Since there were no clues to a myocarditis, later on, however, pareses of atrophical skeletal muscles developed and a distropia myotonica could be diagnosed, the cardiological disturbances are to be regarded as a symptom of this disease. When also a participation of the myocardium in the distrophia myotonica is not unknown, so even in our case the frequently changing disturbances of the nervous impulses of the heart, of the ventricular stimulus conduction and of the replolarisation of different expression as well as the pronounced hypersensitivity to heart glycosides are remarkable individual findings. The interpretation of these findings is problematic. Morphologic and dystrophic changes of the myocardium as well as functional myotonic disturbances on the membraneous system may influence the process of stimulation and may cause the clinical appearances.

[Arrest of dental development in the osteopetrotic rat and the healing effect of normal bone marrow].

The development of the osteopetrotic "op" rat's mandible was examined from birth to 4 months of age. Before birth the growth of incisors is disturbed and after birth the molar growth stops. Bone resorption is severely reduced and enamel formation ceases soon on the inferior aspect of the incisor, due to degeneration of ameloblasts and lack of vascularisation. A single injection or normal bone marrow cured the disorder at the long bone level within 2-3 months and had a beneficial effect in re-establishing the growth of dental tissue, yet without leading to tooth eruption.

[Curing of the congenital osteopetrosis of "op" rats by thymus grafts].

A graft of normal thymus performed after thymectomy can cure the lethal osteopetrotic condition of the "op" Rat. The beneficial effect of normal bone marrow injection can be suppressed by prior thymectomy of the "op" Rat. Thymus is likely to play a role in the pathogenesis of osteopetrosis.

[Morphological, clinical and biochemical findings on the swine-liver after heterologous perfusion for treatment of fatal ammonium bichromate poisoning].

A 23-year old man died after intake of ammonium bichromate. For treatment among others was used the extracorporal heterologous liver perfusion with the liver of a pig. Therefore technical problems, clinical and biochemical findings as well as pathologo-anatomical changes on the livers of pigs after heterologous perfusion are reported and their significance as well as pathogenesis are discussed taking into consideration literary data.

[Intrathoracal tumor with accompanying hypoglycemia].

The number of the Doege-Potter-syndrome cases described above is less than one hundred. Even rarer are thoracic tumours with associated hypoglycaemia. The pathophysiologic mechanisms of the syndrome have not been fully elucidated as yet. There are also divergencies about the etiology of hypoglycaemia. Several hypotheses are under discussion. Even our observation shows the difficulty of discovering the genesis of tumour-conditioned hypoglycaemia.

Regulation of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase by glutamine and ATP as possible control mechanisms of renal gluconeogenesis.

In different metabolic states renal phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEP-CK) activities are closely correlated with in vitro glucogenic rates, suggesting a limitation of the glucogenic capacity of kidney by this enzyme. Stimulation of renal gluconeogenesis from pyruvate, lactate, and succinate by lysine and glutamine was therefore associated with a regulatory attack of these amino acids at the level of PEP-carboxykinase. This postulate was confirmed by the failure of lysine to stimulate glucose synthesis from fructose. Experimental support for an interference of glutamine and PEP-carboxykinase was obtained by a study on the inactivation of this enzyme in kidney cortex homogenates: A rapid inactivation of enzyme activity within 40-50 min could be slowed down by glutamine. In addition the inactivation was counteracted by ATP. At suboptimal concentrations of the trinucleotide its effect was potentiated by c-AMP and c-GMP. Studies on the effect of ATP on PEP-carboxykinase in kidney cortex homogenates from rats in different metabolic states revealed: In homogenates from carbohydrate fed animals extreme low activities of PEP-CK were not altered by ATP, whereas elevated enzyme activities after a protein rich diet could be further raised by a factor of 2 or 3 by ATP. GTP and ITP could substitute for ATP. An extension of these studies on hepatic enzymes showed a similar inactivation of tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT) and a protective effect of ATP. The data obtained from these experiments favour an interconversion of PEP-carboxykinase and tyrosine aminotransferase into different forms as possible mechanism for their regulation.

[Comparison of short and protracted streptokinase therapy in acute myocardial infarction].

In numerous controlled studies the effectivity of the streptokinase therapy of the acute myocardial infarction is proved by a significant decrease of the early lethality. The main difference of the therapeutic methods lies in the duration of the application of streptokinase. Of the number of patients of an intensive therapy ward for internal diseases comparisons of the results of therapy of one year with short-term lysis (3 hours) are contrasted with one year with protracted lysis therapy (24-72 hours). The findings demonstrated plead for the fact that by means of the short-time lysis may also be achieved good, perhaps even better results. Issuing from the therapeutic mechanisms of the lysis therapy in the sense of a prevention of the formation of thrombi in disturbed microcirculation by the achieved hyperplasminaemia the short-term lysis is to be regarded as optimum introduction of an anticoagulant long-term therapy.

[Variation of the mitotic coefficient and biochemical specialization. Study of the differentiation of the liver parenchyma in the goose during the embryonal period and after hatching].

An abrupt decrease of the mitotic index occurs between the 15th and the 18 day of incubation. This decrease is concomitant withthe appearance of glycogen first and of lipids later. The differenciation implicated by this biochemical specialisation is correlative of a lowering of cellular multiplication ability, according to A. Prenant's general law.
