Perceptions of quality of life in Hispanic patients with cancer.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe perceptions of quality of life (QOL) of Hispanic patients with cancer pain. DESCRIPTION OF STUDY: This qualitative pilot study is guided by the conceptual framework of pain and QOL. From interviews with 17 Hispanic patients with cancer pain, data on perceptions of QOL were analyzed and are reported here. RESULTS: The study demonstrated the influence of culture on perceptions of QOL and the impact of pain on QOL. Several themes were identified for each domain of QOL, including physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being. The role of the family and faith in God were important components of QOL for all patients. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: It is important for clinicians to devote greater attention to cultural assessment and to include cultural beliefs in cancer care to improve QOL for Hispanic patients. The role of the family and religious beliefs should be included in the planning and evaluation of each patient's care.

Effects of controlled-released morphine on quality of life for cancer pain.

Oncology nursing is concerned with pain relief and overall Quality of Life (QOL). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of controlled-release morphine on QOL for patients with cancer. Eighty-three subjects were randomly assigned in a clinical trial of short-acting versus controlled-release analgesia (MS Contin, Purdue Frederick Co., Norwalk, CT). Data was collected in a repeated measures design every 2 weeks for 6 weeks yielding a total of 240 visits. Five instruments were used to assess QOL, pain, and functional status. Study findings indicate improved pain management with controlled-release MS Contin and important nursing implications for the management of analgesia-induced gastrointestinal symptoms. Through appropriate pain management with pain therapies such as controlled-release analgesia, nurses can greatly enhance QOL for the patient with cancer.

Quality of life and the cancer experience: the state-of-the-knowledge.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: To address the state-of-the-knowledge concerning quality of life (QOL) issues and the cancer experience from theoretical, research, clinical, and educational perspectives. DATA SOURCES: Published books and articles and a panel of experienced QOL experts who convened at the Oncology Nursing Society's State-of-the-knowledge Conference on Quality of Life in February 1995. DATA SYNTHESIS: Despite the evolution and support of QOL in oncology nursing practice, education, and research, there remains gaps in theory, research, and practice related to QOL. This article explores these gaps in knowledge and recommends future directions for QOL theory, research, education, and practice. CONCLUSIONS: Further conceptual work and resolution of QOL methodologic issues to guide clinical practice and education are warranted. The impact of cultural variables and precancer life experiences on patients' perceptions of QOL also must be addressed. NURSING IMPLICATIONS: Oncology nurse clinicians, educators, and researchers must continue to work collaboratively to enhance the knowledge base regarding QOL and to improve the nursing care provided to individuals with cancer.
