Improving the fracture resistance of dental ceramic.

A time-temperature sequence for optimally strengthening dental ceramic by ion exchange was investigated. Stress relaxation occurs at higher temperatures and/or longer times. Improved strenghts are obtained in a reasonable period of time that could be used for clinical application.

A flexural method for evaluation of metal-ceramic bond strengths.

A test technique is presented for evaluating metal-ceramic bond strengths. The test piece consists of a four-point loaded metal beam with porcelain bonded to the central tension side of the beam. The test produced failures at predictable locations and was able to differentiate between metal surface treatments.

Data storage and retrieval system for a nuclear medicine department.

A mark sense IBM data card was designed specifically for the nuclear medicine department. The data card functions as a flow sheet with coded information added in sequence by secretary, technician, and physician. Statistical information, patient identification, quantitative results, physician interpretation, and discharge diagnosis can be easily coded and entered on the card by the appropriate individual. The completed card can be punched, filed, and retrieved by machine. Filing and retrieving can also be done by hand for flexibility. The stored data can easily by programmed and converted to computer handling and storage. The card is inexpensive to produce. Card design is extremely flexible for varying needs. If sorting and punching equipment is not available, this can be contracted for in the community as low cost.

Intracardiac rhabdomyosarcoma: transesophageal echocardiographic findings and diagnosis.

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was performed on a 41-year-old woman who presented with a cerebrovascular accident. TEE confirmed the presence of a morphologically bizarre biatrial tumor with precarious, vigorous motion throughout the cardiac cycle. Surgical intervention was decided on, and the patient underwent cardiac surgery for tumor excision 16 hours after TEE. Intraoperative frozen section diagnosis was spindle cell sarcoma, and subsequent immunohistochemical analysis showed the tumor to be a rhabdomyosarcoma. The data are presented here, and the role of TEE to establish a preoperative diagnosis of intracardiac tumor is discussed.

Physical properties of vitamin E oil and silicone oil.

A comparison of the physical properties of vitamin E oil and silicone oil is made. The parameters measured include: viscosity, fluid density, refractive index and wetting characteristics of the water/liquid interface. These properties showed remarkable similarities between vitamin E oil and silicone oil.

Adherence of ceramic coatings on chromium-cobalt structures.

A method has been developed for the consistent adherence of flame-sprayed ceramic coatings to Vitallium. The critical step involves etching the metal by the anodic polarization technique. This procedure allows complex geometrics to be corroded evenly, and, by suitable choice of etching solution and conditions, enables any metal to be substituted. The bond is capable of sustaining more severe deflections than are experienced during intraoral function. Despite the number of cracks generated during testing, the ceramic layer remains intact. The ceramic-metal bond is mechanical. The corroded surface provides greater surface area, thus permitting a number of retention sites. Analysis of the ceramic microstructure finds it to be suitable for tissue ingrowth.

Use of therapeutic humour by psychiatric nurses.

Humour is an essential part of our everyday communication. While for the nurse, there are differences between social and clinical environments, humour cannot be turned on or off in either. Consciously attempting to avoid humour leads to stunted, rigid interaction.
