Functional ablation of the cerebral cortex by cortical spreading depression (CSD) significantly increased the dose of desacetyl lanatoside C required to induce A-V block and ventricular fibrillation. To examine the role of the posterior hypothalamus in the increased resistance of decorticated rats to arrhythmia induced by toxic doses of desacetyl lanatoside C, four groups of animals were injected with this drug: group 1 rats had a craniotomy; group 2 rats had a craniotomy and functional decortication; group 3 rats had a craniotomy and a hypothalamic lesion; and group 4 rats had a craniotomy, hypothalamic lesion and functional decortication. The dose of drug required to induce A-V block and ventricular fibrillation was significantly less in group 1, than in groups 2,3 and 4, and there was no statistically significant difference between these last three groups. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the increased resistance to arrhythmia induced by desacetyl lanatoside C in decorticated rats is mediated by the posterior hypothalamus.

Three different techniques of total body washout (T.B.W.) have been used in experiments dealing with rats. The first technique was employing inferior vena cava as input and abdominal aorta as output; the second one performed just the opposite way; finally the third used abdominal aorta at the start of the experiment, whereas inferior vena cava was selected at the end. The last one proved to be the most efficient technique in comparison to the other ones.
The AA. give description of the anatomical bases of the venous system of compensation in the syndrome of portal hypertension giving iconographic pictures. They describe the major characteristic features of the portal vein circulation with particular attention to the main variations, their forms, site and particularly with reference to the surgical operations they necessitate.

This study analyzed vegetative modulation, expressed as heart rate variability (HRV) power spectral analysis, in lean and obese women at pre-menopausal or post-menopausal age to reveal possible differences in menopause-related autonomic activity in lean and obese subjects. Sedentary women (n = 40) were divided in four groups: pre-menopausal lean and obese women, post-menopausal lean and obese subjects. The HRV-power spectrum was evaluated on a 5-min long ECG recording. The absolute values of the spectrum were summed in the following frequencies: a low-frequency (0.04-0.15 Hz; LF) and high-frequency (0.15-0.40; HF) range. LF and HF were values used to estimate the sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. LF and HF values of pre-menopausal obese women are lower than values of lean women. The menopause induced a same decrease in LF and HF values in lean and obese subjects, so that no difference was found in post-menopausal groups. This experiment indicates that modifications of autonomic modulation can be included among factors related to obesity in pre-menopausal, but not post-menopausal women.
The expression of cyclin T1 in an autoptic case of AIDS-related cachexia was investigated by immunohistochemistry. When contrasted with normal human tissues, a very similar pattern of expression was found. However, a peculiar distribution of cyclin T1 was noticed in the brown fat and in lymph nodes affected by AIDS-associated lymphadenopathy.
The authors have evaluated the skull, thorax, wrist and hand standard radiographs of 29 patients affected by Cooley's disease who were treated up to 1983 with a low transfusion regimen, rather with a high transfusion regimen (Hb level greater than 9.5 g/dl). The patients have been divided into two groups, according to the prevalence of the first or the second transfusion regimen. Almost all the changes described in the literature have been found in the radiographs, but completely modified; some of these, like rib notchings, in higher percentage than known. In the youngest patients the most significant appearances were ribs and hand changes, that can be considered the most important feature in their radiological monitoring. However this new transitional radiological syndrome will rapidly modify with the establishment "ab initio" of the high transfusional regimen.

Acute hypoxic hypoxia is reported to suppress both diet- and cold-induced components of metabolism. In the present experiment the effects of hypoxic hypoxia on the oxygen consumption and on colonic and brown adipose tissue temperature were studied in rats with lesion of the lateral hypothalamus. The electroencephalographic activity, slow potential changes and cortical extracellular potassium concentration were also recorded. The results showed that acute hypoxic hypoxia blocked the thermogenesis induced by lateral hypothalamic lesion and the changes in temperatures were always preceded by modification of the cerebral cortex activity.
