Evidence of an active glucose uptake in Rhizobium meliloti.

Rhizobium meliloti M5N1 showed immediate uptake of glucose. Glucose accumulation was a saturable function of the glucose concentration, and km and Vmax values for uptake were determined. The glucose uptake system was found to be proteic with a turnover of about 6 h. This system was observed to be an active ATP-dependent process, since it was severely inhibited by uncouplers. Glucose analogues and others hexoses had some inhibitory effects on glucose uptake, but not polyols and lactose.

Contributions of intermolecular interactions between constitutive arabinoxylans to the flaxseeds mucilage properties.

The main fraction (about 75%) of the mucilage extracted from seeds of Linum usitatissimum which consists of arabino-xylans (AX) has been studied in dilute and semidilute regimes by SEC/MALLS analysis and rheology, respectively. It has been found that AX contains 3 populations of about 5 000 000 g mol(-1) (less than 10%), 1 000 000 g mol(-1) (about 40%), and 200 000 g mol(-1) (about 50%). We have also observed a great retention of polymer during the filtration procedure, which is much pronounced as the AX concentration increases. This evidences the presence of large aggregates in the solution. The retention can be greatly diminished if the filtration is conducted under higher temperature. Aggregation could result from the establishment of intermolecular associations via hydrogen bonds. This hypothesis seems to be confirmed by the two higher populations in molar masses which present a random coil conformation consistent with a low degree of branching. Rheological measurements, conducted at 20 g L(-1), have confirmed the association tendency leading to pseudo gels behavior. Viscoelastic properties have been evidenced by time-temperature master curves of dynamic spectra. Such master curves have also been established with addition of chaotropic (i.e., KSCN) and lyotropic (i.e., NaCl) salts. It has been shown that intermolecular associations are greatly diminished under chaotropic salts influence. This has been also confirmed by SEC/MALLS analysis. These results point out the role of hydrogen bonds in the organization of the AX system.

[A study of polysaccharides in fast growing "Rhizobium" (author's transl)].

This work is an attempt to use the composition of exopolysaccharides in the Rhizobium genus as a criterium of taxonomic importance. The organisms were first cultured in media and under conditions which led to the production of as many polysaccharides as possible. The medium chosen for proliferation conditions was Wright's medium; for conditions of non-proliferation conditions was Wright's medium; for conditions of non-proliferation, a minimal medium without nitrogen was used. The polysaccharides synthesised in Wright's medium consists in neutral sugars such as glucose, galactose, mannose and sometimes rhamnose and in uronic acid in various quantities. If no mannose is found in the polysaccharides when they are synthesised in non-proliferation conditions and if mannans are found in yeast broth, it may be thought, as suggested by Humphrey, that mannose would come from those mannans. The study of the composition of these polysaccharides enables us to sort out two groups of fast growing Rhizobium. The first one, relatively uniform, corresponds to the strains of R. leguminosarum, trifolii and phaseoli. In these strains, the polysaccharides are made of about 70% of neutral sugars and 20% of glucuronic acid.

[Sensory sequelae of injuries to the median nerve].

Median nerve wounds are frequent because of the superficial course of this nerve, especially in the wrist. The sensory sequellae of such lesions, either complete or dissociated, represent a major handicap which may be associated to a motor impairment of the external thenar muscles. The curative procedures such as neurolysis and, above all, sutures or grafts, must be very widely used, even some time after the initial injury and in spite of motor reinnervation. The role of palliative surgery is therefore limited, although it is sometimes useful. There are many procedures, which may be summed up by two techniques: use of sensitive neurovascular skin flaps, the most frequent grafts, neurotization of the median nerve with a transfer of sensory rami from the radial nerve, a less-known technique. The treatment of the sensory sequellae of median nerve lesions is primarily based on a good initial management of the nerve lesions by a good-quality emergent microsurgical suture.

[Activation of T lymphocytes in the blood and joints of patients with rheumatoid polyarthritis].

The proportion of T Lymphocytes with receptors for interleukin 2 is increased in the blood, the synovial fluid and, in particular, the synovial membrane in rheumatoid arthritis. However, there is no correlation between the percentage in blood and the percentage in the joints. The helper T lymphocytes are proportionately more activated than the suppressor T lymphocytes.

[Rectocolonic cancers in young patients. A population study (Côte-d'Or: 1976-1983].

Between 1976 and 1983, 1,783 colorectal cancers were diagnosed among the Cote-d'Or residents; of these 44 (2.5 p. 100) were under age 45. Cancer developed more often on familial polyposis (11.4 p. 100), ulcerative colitis (2.3 p. 100) or in the Lynch cancer family syndrome (4.6 p. 100) before 45 than in older patients: 0.2 p. 100 (p less than 0.01), 0.2 p. 100 (NS) and 0 p. 100 (p less than 0.01) respectively. There was no significant difference between young and older patients concerning the site, the histologic type or the stage of diagnosis. Curative resection rates were similar before age 45 (68.2 p. 100) as after that age (61.8 p. 100). Operative mortality was lower in younger (3.3 p. 100) than in older patients (12.6 p. 100; NS). After surgery for cure (operative mortality excluded) the 5-year corrected survival rates were similar in the two age groups: 69.4 +/- 8.8 p. 100 and 64.0 +/- 1.8 p. 100 respectively (NS). These data suggest that with the exception of predisposing diseases there is no important difference between young and older patients with regard to the anatomoclinical and evolutive aspects of colorectal cancers.
