Confirmation of bacterial in clinical specimens using Gram's stain with the Sandiford's modification was found to be more useful, especially when Gram-negative bacteria with other forms coexisted, than ordinary Gram's stain. It was useful for staining histopathological specimens also. We believe that this method deserves wider recognition and should be used as a standard procedure in laboratories.

Although the vitamin A concentration was somewhat lower in patients with giardiasis than in normal children this difference was not significant; 35% of patients with giardiasis and 22.6% of normal children had vitamin A concentration lower than 20 micrograms/dl. This indicates that there may be malabsorption of vitamin A and that low serum vitamin A levels may be found in patients who were infected with Giardia lamblia. Therefore, apart from antigiardia agent, supplementation of vitamin A should be considered in the treatment of patients with giardiasis with or without clinical signs of vitamin A deficiency. There was no significant difference in pre-treatment and post-treatment serum vitamin A concentrations of patients with giardiasis. The normal children after treatment with oral vitamin A for three weeks showed a significantly higher serum vitamin A concentration (p < 0.01) than patients after antigiardia treatment plus vitamin A given orally for three weeks. It may be concluded that in patients with giardiasis after treatment with antigiardia drugs, impaired absorption of vitamin A did not improve dramatically, or return to normal for at least 3 weeks. There was no significant difference in the beta carotene concentration between patients with giardiasis and normal children.
A case of papulonecrotic tuberculids of anterior abdominal wall with active tuberculous cervical lymph gland in a 12-year-old girl was demonstrated. This case illustrated the fact that although the papulonecrotic tuberculid is a rare entity, physicians should be aware of its existance to be considered in the differential diagnosis of dermatological lesions. Lesions, which appear in crops resembling chickenpox, with a longer duration and a strongly positive tuberculin test should lead to the diagnosis of papulonecrotic tuberculid. The investigations should include biopsy and demonstration of an active tuberculous foci. The lesions will regress if the patient receive antituberculosis therapy. Misdiagnosis and postponement of treatment with specific drugs may give rise to unsatisfactory consequences.
The pH, lactic acid dehydrogenase, lactate and glucose of pleural fluid simultaneous with serum lactic acid dehydrogenase, blood lactate and glucose were determined in 105 pediatric patients. The patients were classified into groups according to the diagnosis. The pleural fluid of empyema cases was found to have the lowest pH with a mean value of 6.83 (p less than 0.0075). The malignant pleural fluid has a relatively low pH with a mean value of 7.32. The lactic acid dehydrogenase in pleural fluid of empyema cases has the highest mean of 1,470.68 (p less than 0.05). The lactic acid dehydrogenase was found increased in malignancy, tuberculosis and parapneumonic effusion cases. Lactate level was found extremely high in empyema cases with a mean value of 13.68. It was also found extremely high in malignancy, tuberculosis and parapneumonic effusion cases. The glucose level was markedly decreased in empyema cases. There exists correlation of pleural fluid lactate to pH, lactic acid dehydrogenase and glucose, as well as that of pH to lactic acid dehydrogenase.

A total of 164 breast-milk samples from Thai mothers in different stages of lactation, from one day to over nine months postpartum, and 35 samples of infant milk formulas commercially available were analyzed for their lead concentrations using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The mean lead concentration in breast milk was 0.0846 +/- 0.0332 microgram per ml which is in the low range and is safe for infants, whereas the mean lead concentration in commercial infant mild formulas was 0.1587 +/- 0.0232 microgram per ml which can become a potential health hazard to infants.
