Since 1976 intravesical instillation of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) has been used after surgical treatment of bladder cancer. Local side effects like cystitis are common, but a small share of the patients develop influenza-like symptoms, arthritis and other complications. We describe two patients with arthritis.
We report on two patients with severe urgency and pollakisuria where further investigations revealed cystitis cystica (glandularis). Conservative treatment and TUR of the lesions had no effect on the symptoms. After treatment with Neodymium-YAG laser, however, both have been asymptomatic for more than 18 months and urethrocystoscopic examination demonstrated normalization of the bladder mucosa.
A case is reported in which a fat deposit in a patient who had had a continent urostomy fashioned by Kock's technique, caused skin problems and made catheterisation Kock's technique, caused skin problems and made catheterisation difficult. The condition was successfully treated with liposuction around the stoma.
Urinary diversion via a continent ileal reservoir ad modum Kock was performed in eight patients. There was no operative mortality. Early complications necessitated reoperation in three patients, two patients were reoperated due to leakage from the uretero-enteric anastomosis and one patient because of postoperative acute acalculous cholecystitis. Late complications were seen in two patients who were reoperated because of stenosis in the uretero-enteric anastomosis. All patients had excellent functional results with continence without reflux to the upper urinary tract.
Laser treatment associated with transurethral resection of the prostate is a new and promising treatment of the stages T0 diffuse, T1 and T2 prostatic cancer. Our standardized treatment procedure gives few complications. So far we have not recorded any local recurrence in the 26 patients we have treated and followed up from 6 to 42 months.
