First measurement of the ratio B(t --> Wb)/B(t --> Wq) and associated limit on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa element /V(tb)/.

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions R identical withB(t-->Wb)/B(t-->Wq) from p_p collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. The data set corresponds to 109 pb(-1) of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992-95 Tevatron run. We measure R = 0.94(+0.31)(-0.24)(stat+syst) or R>0.61 (0.56) at 90% (95)% C.L., in agreement with the standard model predictions. This measurement yields a limit on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element /V(tb)/ under the assumption of three generations and unitarity.

Measurement of J/psi and psi(2S) polarization in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV.

We have measured the polarization of J/psi and psi(2S) mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV, using data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992-1995. The polarization of promptly produced J/psi [psi(2S)] mesons is isolated from those produced in B-hadron decay, and measured over the kinematic range 4 [5.5]<P(T)<20 GeV/c and |y|<0.6. For P(T) greater than or approximately equal 12 GeV/c we do not observe significant polarization in the prompt component.

Search for scalar top and scalar bottom quarks in pp collisions at square root s=1.8 TeV.

We have searched for direct pair production of scalar top and scalar bottom quarks in 88 pb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV with the CDF detector. We looked for events with a pair of heavy flavor jets and missing energy, consistent with scalar top (bottom) quark decays to a charm (bottom) quark and a neutralino. The numbers of events that pass our selections show no significant deviation from standard model expectations. We compare our results to the next-to-leading order scalar quark production cross sections to exclude regions in scalar quark-neutralino mass parameter space.

Component architecture in HIS: a drug order entry case study.

Historically, many healthcare information systems (HIS) have been designed around monolithic architectures that rely upon a single organization to provide most, if not all, of the system's business logic. Recent advances in distributed systems technology and healthcare standards make a component-based architecture feasible in building today's HIS. The First DataBank Drug Toolkit is used as a case study for the role of components in the design of a HIS. Several technical challenges associated with building truly plug and play components are discussed.

Increased serotonin 5-HT2 receptor binding on blood platelets of suicidal men.

In search of a physiological marker of depression and suicidal behavior, serotonin receptors of the 5-HT2 type were studied on platelet membranes from 19 control and 22 suicidal subjects. All were young, drug- and medication free men (18-21-years-old). 5-HT2 receptor binding was assayed using tritiated ketanserin at two concentrations. Receptor binding in the suicidal subjects was significantly higher than controls at both concentrations, the mean difference being around 50%. A similar difference between patients with major depressive disorder and matched controls has been observed previously. These findings support the use of 5-HT2 receptors on platelets as a research and diagnostic tool in depression and suicide.

A connectionist approach to the recognition of trends in time-ordered medical parameters.

Recognition of trends that emerge over time is a capability that successful medical systems must possess. In this paper the network architecture introduced by Elman (CRL, Technical Report 9901, Center for Research in Language, University of California, San Diego, CA, 1988) for predicting successive elements of a sequence is reviewed. It is proposed that a similar architecture can be utilized in a medical domain. The simple example of a diabetic patient receiving a continuous insulin infusion, for whom only the current serum glucose and infusion status is known, is suggested as a test problem. Two networks are described, that when presented with the serum glucose and pump settings at time steps t and t + 1, are capable of predicting the serum glucose, and suggesting a pump setting at time t + 2. Possible applications, and the limitations of this model are then discussed.
