Effect ofprostaglandins E1 and E2 on hypothalamoneurohypophyseal--Neurosecretory systems of rats: a histochemical study.

PGE2 increases NSM in the neurosecretory neurons and posterior pituitary store of HNNS. It stimulates acid phosphatase and TPPase activities in HT, indicating increased synthesis of NSM. PGE2 also increases AChE and BuChE activities. PGE1 shows very little effect on NSM distribution and enzyme activities. It is concluded that PGE2 causes increased HNNS activity by stimulating AChE-mediated and Ca2+-dependent "stimulation secretion coupling mechanism".

Quantitative study of uterine curettage in the menstrual cycle.

The histological appearances in 114 endometrial curettings from cases of dysfunctional bleeding have been analysed quantitatively by the method of Dunnill and Whitehead (1972) and Risdon and Keeling (1974). As applied to this type of specimen, the technique provides indices of both tubular volume and tubular surface to volume ratio. The histological diagnosis of endometrial hyperplasia is made from the increase in stromal and epithelial elements and the change in the pattern of the glands. These changes, on some occasions, can be difficult to detect. Quantitative analysis can be used to distinguish minor degrees of abnormal endometrial hyperplasia, in comparing serial endometrial changes in a given patient, and in comparing different menstrual cycles in dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Endometrial biopsies were collected and put in categories according to the clinical diagnosis. These biopsies were then examined morphometrically to find the volume/glandular surface and glandular/volume ratio. A significant change in these ratios was found.

Changes in rat adrenal medulla following delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol treatment. A histochemical study.

The effects of acute (10 mg/kg) and chronic 10 mg/kg for 30 days) administration of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta9-THC) have been studied histochemically in the rat adrenal medulla, which include total catecholamines, noradrenaline, histometric measurements of adrenal medullary areas, calcium content of the medullary cells along with adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase), acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) and butyryl cholinesterase (BChE) activities. Acute delta9-THC treatment reduced the total catecholamine content (including noradrenaline) of the gland, was accompanied by increased ATP-ase, AChE, BChE activities and increased calcium distribution in the gland. Chronic delta9-THC treatment caused significant hypertrophy of the chromaffin tissue, with decreased total catecholamine content, although noradrenaline containing areas exhibited no notable change. The calcium content and ATPase activity were increased along with a concomitant increase in AChE and BChE activities. Although the changes in adrenal medullary enzyme activities following both acute and chronic delta9-THC treatment are qualitatively similar, marked quantitative increase is noted in the chronically treated groups. The results indicate an increased total catecholamine releasing activity of the adrenal medulla following acute delta9-THC treatment, while chronic delta9-THC administration produces a preferential release of adrenaline.

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and lysergic acid diethylamide: comparative changes in the supraoptic and paraventricular neurosecretory activities in rat hypothalamus.

Acute delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-9-THC) administration (50 mg/kg, i.p.) produced accumulation of stainable neurosecretory materials (NSM) in the neural lobe (NL) region with a concomitant dispersion of stainable NSM in the neuronal perikarya of hypothalamic supraoptic nucleus (SON) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN) regions. Chronic treatment with delta-9-THC (10 mg/kg, 15 days) produced marked accumulation of NSM in the NL with more prominent degranulation of the neuronal perikarya of SON and PVN. Acute LSD treatment (50 mug/kg) caused accumulation of stainable NSM in the NL region, with unaltered perikaryal distribution pattern of both SON and PVN; chronic LSD treatment (10 mug/kg, 15 days), on the other hand, caused marked increase of NSM in the neuronal perikarya of SON and PVN with no prominent accumulation in the NL. Results indicated that chronic exposure of delta-9-THC lowered the functional activity of SON and PVN neurons while chronic LSD treatment stimulated the hypothalamo-neurohypophyseal neurosecretory system of rats.

Massive rectal bleeding due to jejunal and colonic tuberculosis.

A case of massive rectal bleeding due to colonic tuberculosis in advanced pregnancy with intrauterine foetal death is reported. Patient was treated with resection of the left colon and left transverse end colostomy with closure of the rectal stump. Hysterotomy for the removal of the dead foetus was performed. The patient improved in health with antitubercular treatment. The colorectal anastomosis was performed after 4 months. Massive rectal bleeding in intestinal tuberculosis, though rare should be kept in mind.

A rapid assessment of anaemia in pregnancy in West Bengal with special reference to care seeking behaviour of mothers.

A cross-sectional study was conducted among the pregnant women in three administrative divisions of West Bengal to undertake a rapid assessment about the magnitude of the problem of anaemia in pregnancy and also to study care seeking behaviour for the same. The findings revealed that the occurrence of anaemia in these three divisions were very high to the extent of 86.39% and popularly known as 'Raktasunyata" or 'Raktalpata' to the common people. As per WHO guidelines (< 40% prevalence) it could be considered as public health problem of very high magnitude. Caregivers prescribed iron supplementation only in 70% of registered pregnant women when 100% coverage of pregnant women with IFA tablet is our national goal. Amongst this group 72.2% were partially consuming these tablets. Main reason for irregular or partial consumption was inability to purchase iron tablets (52.63%). Around 16% mothers were taking rest for 2 hours at daytime during pregnancy. Most important reasons for not consuming iron tablets were that iron was prescribed on the day of study (43.18%) and iron was not prescribed even though mothers were registered (36.23%). Focus group discussion highlighted some factors regarding improvement of the situation.

Effectiveness of training on infant feeding practices among community influencers in a rural area of west Bengal.

Total 34 Influencers were trained in a subcentre area of South 24-parganas district of West Bengal. Knowledge was imparted to community influencers on infant feeding practices through lecture, group discussion, question-answer session and hand-on-training by trained health workers. Pre-assessment was done before initiation of training. Repeat training was conducted at frequent intervals within a period of 3 months. Mean score of knowledge of influencers during pre-training assessment was 13.3 and improved thereafter-following training to 20.8 (1st assessment), 20.6 (2nd assessment), 23.7 (3rd assessment) and 25.2 (final-assessment). Repeat training had also desired impact.

An assessment of AIDS awareness program--for I.C.D.S. functionaries.

An assessment of the "One Day AIDS Awareness Program" for I.C.D.S. functionaries was done. The pre-training knowledge level scores were 55.3%, 39.3% and 60.4% of the total score, in 24-Parganas (S), Burdwan and Calcutta districts respectively. However, the post-training assessment scores were observed to be 91.9%, 84.9% and 94.8% in 24-Parganas (S), Burdwan and Calcutta districts respectively. The percentage increase in mean scores was found to be 66.5%, 115.8% and 57.1% in 24-Parganas (S), Burdwan and Calcutta districts respectively.
