[Diffuse peritonitis and its late sequelae].

The author gives an account of the late complications in patients operated at the surgical department of the District Institute of National Health Michalovce on account of diffuse peritonitis in 1966-1975. A total of 258 patients were examined who attended from a total number of 505 invited, operated during the ten-year period under investigation. The high incidence of chronic sequelae and their serious character must be the reason for seeking steadily reserves in surgical treatment of diffuse peritonitis as well as during postoperative care.

[Successful treatment of injuries of the abdominal aorta].

The authors describe successful treatment of severe haemorrhagic shock caused by profuse haemorrhage from the infrarenal portion of the abdominal aorta. After primary treatment of the perforation by a vascular suture reoperation was necessary because of repeated haemorrhage from that site, and for closure of the dehiscence Dacron stitch was used.

[Possibilities of emergency endoscopic diagnosis of hemorrhage in the upper gastrointestinal tract from a prognostic viewpoint].

The authors give an account on the analysis of results of urgent endoscopy in 112 patients with haemorrhage into the upper gastrointestinal tract. From their work ensues that it is an advantage to apply the method in the surgical department; urgent endoscopy reduces the number of urgent operations, eliminates so-called "blind" resections and contributes to a reduction of the general and surgical mortality.

[Injuries of the inferior vena cava--prerequisites of successful treatment].

The authors submit a report on the successful treatment of an uncommon injury--a blunt injury of the infrahepatic portion of the vena cava inferior which was part of a multiple injury. In the conclusion the authors formulate general prerequisites of a successful solution of similar injuries and express the demand that as reserve strategic, tactical and technical knowledge should be assembled on the above problem by a large number of surgeons.

[Personal experience with the treatment of childhood peritonitis of appendiceal origin using peroperative peritoneal lavage].

The author submits his own experience with the treatment of peritonitis of appendiceal origin in children by a single peroperative peritoneal lavage with intraabdominal administration of antibiotics and Entizol. He compares the average period of hospitalization and incidence of early postoperative complications in in 62 children treated in this way in 1985-1987 at the surgical department of the District Institute of National Health in Michalovce with data in the literature and data from their own department in 1962-1981 in children treated by the classical procedure. Both investigated indicators are in patients treated by peroperative lavage markedly more favourable. The basic prerequisite is, however, strict adherence of the fundamental principles of the described therapeutic procedure.
