Discourse behaviors in older adults.

An overview of the changes in older adults' comprehension of language and discourse is provided before changes in production are discussed in some detail. Age-related changes in discourse production have been studied in terms of semantic skills, syntactic complexity, verbal fragmentation, information load, cohesion, macrostructural elements, and conversation. In spite of the heterogeneity in older adults' discourse behaviors, they have a tendency to use shorter, less complex sentences and more indefinite, ambiguous references. Nevertheless, the basic conversational skills of the normally aging elderly are usually well preserved.

Factors influencing service utilization by older individuals. Perceptions of communication disorders professionals and older respondents.

This project investigated the extent to which communication disorders professionals feel their services are being utilized by older persons and possible factors they believe may influence inadequate service utilization. Older respondents were also queried with respect to the same service utilization concerns as they pertained to health services in general. Survey data are reported for the two groups in terms of both perceived levels of and factors restricting service utilization. In addition, subgroup response patterns within both professional and older sampling groups are identified, and the lack of congruence between perceptions of professional and older respondents is discussed.

Imitation of suprasegmental patterns by five-year-old children with adequate and inadequate articulation.

Ten five-year-old children with adequate articulation skills and 10 five-year-old children with inadequate articulation skills were administered the Templin-Darley Test of Articulation and the Test of Rhythm and Intonation Patterns (TRIP). Differences between the adequate and inadequate groups in terms of the mean percentage correct and the correlations between TRIP and Templin-Darley Test scores within groups were statistically nonsignificant. Item analysis revealed no differences between groups in the pattern of performance on the three subtests of the TRIP or on specific test items. The possible effects of therapy enrollment on suprasegmental test performance are discussed, and future research needs are suggested.
