Neonatal hepatic abscess.

Neonatal liver abscess is a rare entity. There are no published reports of neonatal liver abscess in the radiology literature in the past 15 years. We recently encountered a premature infant in whom a hepatic abscess was diagnosed solely based on abnormal radiographic studies. We report this case to illustrate the unusual clinical and radiographic abnormalities seen with neonatal solitary hepatic abscess.

Modification and evaluation of the potato disc assay and antitumor screening of euphorbiaceae seeds.

Galsky et al. (10, 11) have reported that the inhibition and growth of crown gall tumors, initiated on potato discs by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, apparently has good agreement with 3PS in vivo antileukemic activity in mice. We have now modified and evaluated this assay for its potential use as a prescreen and fractionation monitor of plant extracts for 3PS activity. The modified assay was performed on a series of natural compounds and plant extracts (known to have 3PS activity) and on extracts of seeds of 41 Euphorbiaceae species. The results suggest that the potato disc assay is a safe, simple, rapid, in-house, low cost, prescreen for 3PS antitumor activity; it detects some false positives, but few false negatives; it is statistically much more predictive (p = 0.002) of 3PS activity than either the 9KB (p = 0.140) or the 9PS (p = 0.114) cytotoxicity assays. Its extended use could easily obviate the expense and extensive need for animals in the initial stages of antitumor screening and plant fractionation.

Ringo, Doty, Demeter and Simard, Cerebral Cortex 1994;4:331-343: a proof of the need for the spatial clustering of interneuronal connections to enhance cortical computation.

It has been argued that an important principle driving the organization of the cerebral cortex towards local processing has been the need to decrease time lost to interneuronal conduction delay. In this paper, I show for a simplified model of the cerebral cortex, using analytical means, that if interneuronal conduction time increases proportional to interneuronal distance, then the only way to increase the numbers of synaptic events occurring in a fixed finite time period is to spatially cluster interneuronal connections.

A comparison of three wound dressings in patients undergoing heart surgery.

Two hundred fifty patients undergoing heart surgery were randomized in a prospective comparative study of a semiocclusive hydroactive wound dressing, an occlusive hydrocolloid dressing, and a conventional absorbent dressing. The wounds were evaluated during the 4 weeks after surgery. Color photographs were used for a blind evaluation of wound healing. The conventional absorbent dressing was more effective in wound healing, compared with the hydroactive dressing. Further, there were fewer skin changes and less redness in the wounds with the conventional dressing than with the hydroactive dressing; the differences were not significant with the hydrocolloid dressing. The conventional dressing was less painful to remove than the hydroactive and hydrocolloid dressings. More frequent dressing changes, however, were needed when using the conventional dressing. Despite this, it was the least expensive alternative.

Did Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571) have Reiter's disease?

The Renaissance artist Benvenuto Cellini admitted in his autobiography to the contraction of a sexually transmitted disease. Passages of Cellini's autobiography discussing symptoms are reviewed, and his own statements form the basis for concluding that he suffered from Reiter's disease.
