The fact that numerous embryologic epithelial remnants are a normal occurrence in the oral region is well known. That some of these epithelial remnants occur within peripheral nerves is less well known. This study presents examples of intraneural epithelial rests from 3 different anatomic sites: the soft tissues of the jaws (a juxtaoral organ of Chievitz), the posterior maxilla (an ondotogenic rest), and the anterior maxilla (a nasopalatine duct remnant). The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention of surgical pathologists to this phenomenon in the head and neck in order to avoid extensive unnecessary surgery.
Tuberculosis surveillance efforts in the nursing home for elderly persons need organization into an effective program. The ability to tally results of testing gives reliable parameters for comparison and may alert practitioners to early active disease presentation and transmission within the setting. Such efforts based on current research and recommendations ensure provision of prudent and useful standards of elderly care. Our experience during a 10-year period shows that tuberculosis may be an active problem for nursing home populations.

We studied a nursing home population to delineate the frequency of weight loss and weight gain, the categories of loss and gain, and the factors or causes that contribute to losses and gains. Acute illness was determined to be the major cause of weight loss at the nursing home, followed by psychiatric/psychologic disorders and dementia. Such facts encourage replication in other nursing home populations to prompt attention to weight loss and weight gain.
This article has described a self-care model of teaching infection control to CNAs in nursing homes. How the CNAs know and detect illness in themselves becomes the basis for learning about the presentation of acute illness in nursing home residents. This model begins with a discussion of the different meanings of feelings, then the awareness of changes during acute illness, and the factors affecting nursing home residents that change their perceptions of acute illness. With this knowledge, CNAs empathically detect the changes of common acute infectious illnesses in elderly nursing home residents to accomplish infection control. This model uses self-care as a motivational tool, blending greater knowledge with self-confidence.
Production rates of the activation of oxygen and nitrogen by high-energy x-ray beams from medical accelerators were measured as functions of the accelerator energy. A technique was developed in which the air-activation production rates are used to evaluate the concentration of radioactive gas in the treatment room and the dose received by the technologist who operates the accelerator. It was found that for typical operating conditions of medical accelerators, the dose received by personnel entering the treatment room is negligible compared to the maximum permissible dose limit.
Human listeners can often improve their ability to discriminate sounds with practice. We have been using behavioral techniques to examine the patterns of learning and generalization on basic auditory tasks, such as the discrimination of the time interval between two sounds. Here we briefly state our motivations for examining learning on these basic tasks, describe our experimental paradigm, and provide an example of our results.
Shy-Drager syndrome (SDS) is associated with a myriad of autonomic and neurologic impairments, including sleep disturbances. A review of the literature reveals that there are no reports of SDS presenting with an abnormality of sleep. The following case report describes a patient who was diagnosed with SDS approximately one decade after initially presenting with a progressive, polysomnographically confirmed disturbance of sleep--specifically, an REM behavioral disorder (RBD).
