The effects of Aspergillus fumigatus antigens on platelet function of rabbits was studied. A. fumigatus antigens produced spontaneous and irreversible aggregation of platelets. Aspirin, indomethacin or lidocaine did not block the antigen-induced aggregation. However, no aggregations occurred when complement depleted plasma was used. No differences were noted between the strains used. Our findings show that soluble Aspergillus antigens can cause platelet aggregation in vitro, possibly via a complement dependent pathway. The likely implications of these findings in clinical situations are discussed.
Baseline FHR variability has been quantitated into the mathematical indices of differential index (short-term variability) and interval index (long-term variability). Normal values have been determined. The effect that drugs used during labor have on FHR baseline variability has been evaluated. A clinically meaningful change in variability has been observed following low-dose administration of Demerol, morphine, Nisentil, Phenergan, and Vistaril. A statistically significant increase in variability has been observed following administration of magnesium sulfate.

The results of longitudinal study of a self-selected sample of 1,790 Barbadian women who accepted the intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) as their method of contraception are reported. The accumulated experience of 44,000 woman months of IUD use is presented. The demographic, medical, and obstetric data on admission for 2,797 IUD acceptors and 4,296 nonacceptors are contrasted. The reproductive experience of the two groups prior to the insertion of an IUD with respect to live births, stillbirths, and miscarriages is similar while the incidence of ectopic pregnancy is shown to be different. The association between the IUD and the incidence of tubal pregnancy is evaluated, and the literature dealing with this topic is reviewed. Estimates of the relative risk of an ectopic pregnancy in a woman with an IUD in utero are given.
Four patients are presented who were ascertained to have synchronous primary neoplasms-adenocarcinoma of the colon and lymphoma. The age-specific incidence of these lesions is used to compute the expected incidence of this joint occurrence in the aggregate. A hypothesis is proposed to explain the association between adenocarcinoma of the colon and lymphoma. The available data concerning the incidence of multiple primary malignancy of different organs is briefly discussed. It is suggested that data pertaining to multiple primary malignancies of different organs is confused as a result of pooling heterogeneous groups.

Peripheral blood lymphocytes were isolated from normal mice and mice undergoing pertussis-induced lymphocytosis. After labeling in vitro with tritiated uridine the cells were transfused into normal or pertussis-treated mice. It was found that the lymphocytes from pertussis-treated mice entered the lymph nodes of both normal mice and pertussis-treated mice to a significantly lesser extent than did normal lymphocytes which had been transfused into either class of recipient. In addition, an interdependence of changes in the various body compartments examined was found when normal lymphocytes were injected into either type of recipient. However, when pertussis lymphocytes were injected into normal mice there was no interrelationship between the changes in the node with those in the blood, liver, lung, or spleen. In the case of pertussis lymphocytes transfused into pertussis-treated mice no interrelationship between any two compartments was observed. It was concluded that in pertussis-treated mice there is an inhibition of lymphocyte emigration which is primarily the consequence of an effect on the cell.

Follow-up studies of 7 to 19 months of two groups of 500 women each in Barbados, in one of which a Lippes loop had been inserted by a doctor and in the other by a nurse-midwife, showed a slightly higher incidence of pregnancy and expulsion of the loop in the second group, though the difference was not statistically significant. The insertion of loops by paramedical personnel when this is an economic necessity is thought not to be contraindicated, but adequate training is essential.
