Scrofuloderma neck with chest wall abscess.

Cutaneous tuberculosis (TB) is among the uncommon varieties of tuberculosis but it is also on the rise, commensurate with the general resurgence of the disease. A case of scrofuloderma of neck with tuberculous abscess of anterior chest wall is, hereby, reported. The patient presented with a non-healing ulcer of neck with swelling of anterior chest wall, which responded to antituberculous treatment. This complication of scrofuloderma neck is very rare and should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of such lesions.

Dehydration related abdominal pain (DRAP).

OBJECTIVE: To describe the frequency of dehydration as a medical cause of acute abdomen. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analytical study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: The study was conducted at Combined Military Hospital, Malir Cantonment Karachi between March 1, 2000 to March 1, 2002. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: All the patients reporting with abdominal pain to the surgical outpatient department or the emergency department, were reviewed in the study. The clinical findings in all these cases were studied along with the mode of their management and outcome. RESULTS: Of all the patients presenting with abdominal pain, 303% (n=68) were suffering from dehydration related abdominal pain. They were predominantly males in a ratio of 8.7:1, mostly in the 2nd and 3rd decades of their lives. All these cases were suffering from acute or chronic dehydration were provisionally diagnosed by general practitioners as 'acute abdomen' and referred for surgical consultation. Associated symptoms included vomiting in 42.6% backache in 91.2%, headache in 95.6%, and pain in lower limbs in 97.1% of the cases. 83.8% required indoor management with intravenous fluids. All the patients became asymptomatic with rehydration therapy. CONCLUSION: Dehydration is a possible cause of severe abdominal pain. There is a need to educate the general public about the benefits of adequate fluid intake.

Biosynthesis of ascorbic acid in germinating rapeseed cultivars.

Biosynthesis of ascorbic acid in irradiated and unirradiated germinating rapeseed cultivars was studied at ambient room temperature (20-35 degrees C). Appreciable quantities of ascorbic acid (19.8-24.1 mg/100 g) were detected in the seeds and synthesis of this vitamin increased significantly (three fold) with increasing germination time depending upon rapeseed cultivars (p < 0.05). Soaking of seeds in tap water (1:2) for 24 hours resulted in the decrease of the vitamin in each case. Among the radiation treatments (0.05-0.20 kGy), maximum amounts of ascorbic acid were found in 0.10 kGy (342.1 mg/100 g dry weight) and 0.15 kGy (113.8 mg/100 g wet weight) samples after 96 hours of germination. An overall significant linear relation (r = 0.96) was observed between vitamin biosynthesis and germination time upto 96 hours in rapeseed.
