New norditerpenoid alkaloids from Aconitum falconeri.

The roots of Aconitum falconeri have yielded two new norditerpenoid alkaloids, faleoconitine (1) and 3'-methoxyacoforestinine (2) along with the known compounds, karakoline, 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one, and 3,4-dimethoxymethylbenzoate, which have been isolated for the first time from this plant. The previously reported pseudaconitine (3) was also isolated. Compounds 1 and 3 were found to be moderate inhibitors of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase.

A arylnaphthalene lignan from Haplophyllum buxbaumii.

Haplophyllum buxbaumii has yielded a new diphyllin glycoside, which was characterized as 4-O-{bis-alpha-L-xylopyranosyl (1-->2, 1-->5) beta-D-apiofuranosyloxy}-6,7-dimethoxy-1-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)-3-hydroxymethyl naphthalene-2-carboxylic acid lactone. Taiwanin-H is also reported for the first time from a member of the Rutaceae.

A succinylanthranilic acid ester and other bioactive constituents of Jolyna laminarioides.

Methyl 2-[propanamide-2'-methoxycarbonyl] benzoate, fucosterol, trans-phytol and p-formylphenol were isolated for the first time from a methanolic extract of Jolyna laminarioides. Methyl 2-[propanamide-2'-methoxycarbonyl]-benzoate exhibited chymotrypsin inhibitory activity and also found to be active against Escherichia coli and Shigella boydii. Fucosterol exhibited antifungal activity against Curvularia lunata, Stachybotrys atra and Microsporum canis.

Medicinal plants with hypoglycemic activity.

This review summarises the literature on the antidiabetic activity of 343 medicinal plants reputed in the indigenous system of medicine or in which the pharmacological activity has been scientifically demonstrated. The data are presented in tabular form. The table reflects the plant parts involved, the nature of the extracts used and the names of the active principles with their structures where known. The pharmacological activities of some of the extracts or of the active principles isolated from these plants are also described.
