Glyoxalase I-type hemithioacetal isomerization reactivity of a mononuclear Ni(II) deprotonated amide complex.

The synthesis, characterization, and hemithioacetal isomerization reactivity of a mononuclear Ni(II) deprotonated amide complex, [(bppppa-)Ni]ClO4.CH3OH (1, bppppa- = monoanion of N,N-bis-[(6-phenyl-2-pyridyl)methyl]-N-[(6-pivaloylamido-2-pyridyl)methyl]amine), are reported. Complex 1 was characterized by X-ray crystallography, 1H NMR, UV-vis, FTIR, and elemental analysis. Treatment of 1 with an equimolar amount of the hemithioacetal PhC(O)CH(OH)SCD3 in dry acetonitrile results in the production of the thioester PhCH(OH)C(O)SCD3 in approximately 60% yield. This reaction is conveniently monitored via 2H NMR spectroscopy. A protonated analogue of 1, [(bppppa)Ni](ClO4)2 (2), is unreactive with the hemithioacetal, thus indicating the requirement of the anionic chelate ligand in 1 for hemithioacetal isomerization reactivity. Complex 1 is unreactive with the thioester product, PhCH(OH)C(O)SCD3, which indicates that the pKa value for the PhCH(OH)C(O)SCD3 proton of the thioester must be significantly higher than the pKa value of the C-H proton of the hemithioacetal (PhC(O)CH(OH)SCD3). Complex 1 is the first well-characterized Ni(II) coordination complex to exhibit reactivity relevant to Ni(II)-containing E. coli glyoxalase I. Treatment of NiBr2.2H2O with PhC(O)CH(OH)SCD3 in the presence of 1-methylpyrrolidine also yields thioester product, albeit the reaction is slower and involves the formation of multiple -SCD3 labeled species, as detected by 2H NMR spectroscopy. The results of this study provide the first insight into hemithioacetal isomerization promoted by a synthetic Ni(II) coordination complex versus a simple Ni(II) ion.

The synthesis of new 60 degrees organometallic subunits and self-assembly of three-dimensional M3L2 trigonal-bipyramidal cages.

By employing the coupling reaction of trans-PtI2(Et3)2 with C-H bonds in alkynes as the key step, two new 60 degrees organometallic subunits with different size from 3,6-dibromophenanthrene were prepared in reasonable yields. The X-ray structures of both di-Pt(II) diiodide complexes showed that they were indeed suitable candidates for 60 degrees building units. By utilizing these novel linkers as ditopic acceptor subunits, three M3L2 trigonal-bipyramidal (TBP) cages were formed. All three TBP cages were characterized with multinuclear NMR and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) along with element analysis.

A cadmium hydroxide complex of a N3S-donor ligand containing two hydrogen bond donors: synthesis, characterization, and CO2 reactivity.

Treatment of the ebnpa (N-2-(ethylthio)ethyl-N,N-bis((6-neopentylamino-2-pyridyl)methyl)amine) ligand with a molar equivalent amount of Cd(ClO(4))(2).5H(2)O in CH(3)CN followed by the addition of [Me(4)N]OH.5H(2)O yielded the cadmium hydroxide complex [(ebnpaCd)(2)(mu-OH)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (1). Complex 1 has a binuclear cation in the solid-state with secondary hydrogen-bonding and CH/pi interactions involving the ebnpa ligand. In acetonitrile, 1 forms a binuclear/mononuclear equilibrium mixture. The formation of a mononuclear species has been confirmed by conductance measurements of 1 at low concentrations. Variable temperature studies of the binuclear/mononuclear equilibrium provided the standard enthalpy and entropy associated with the formation of the monomer as DeltaH degrees = +31(2) kJ mol(-1) and DeltaS degrees = +108(8) J mol(-1) K(-1), respectively. Enhanced secondary hydrogen-bonding interactions involving the terminal Cd-OH moiety may help to stabilize the mononuclear complex. Treatment of 1 with CO(2) in acetonitrile results in the formation of a binuclear cadmium carbonate complex, [(ebnpaCd)(2)(mu-CO(3))](ClO(4))(2) (2).

Solvent-enhanced magnetic ordering temperature for mixed-valent chromium hexacyanovanadate(II), Cr(II)0.5Cr(III)[V(II)(CN)6].zMeCN, magnetic materials.

The reaction of V(III)(THF)3Cl3 with NEt(4)CN in acetonitrile (MeCN) forms (NEt4)3[V(III)(CN)6].4MeCN (1), which after characterization was used as a molecular building block toward the synthesis of Prussian blue structured magnets. The reaction of 1 with [Cr(II)(NCMe)4](BF4)2 forms Cr(II)(0.5)Cr(III)[V(II)(CN)6].zMeCN via internal electron transfer, whose structure and magnetic properties are dependent on the degree of solvation, z. When solvated, Cr(II)(0.5)Cr(III)[V(II)(CN)6].1.2MeCN (2) is a mixture of crystalline and amorphous fractions that yield a material with two magnetic phases: bulk ferrimagnetic phase/crystalline [faced-centered-cubic lattice with a = 10.55(2) A] and cluster-glass phase/amorphous. The bulk ferrimagnetic phase exhibits a critical temperature, Tc, of 110 K, while the amorphous cluster-glass phase exhibits a freezing temperature, Tf, of approximately 25 K. Amorphous Cr(II)(0.5)Cr(III)[V(II)(CN)6].0.1MeCN (3) was determined to be the pure cluster-glass phase. This is an overall enhancement of 85 K (350%) in the magnetic ordering temperature via solvation, z. The coercivity was also increased 4-fold from 890 (2) and 3900 Oe (3) via desolvation.

Incorporation of 2,6-di(4,4'-dipyridyl)-9-thiabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane into discrete 2D supramolecules via coordination-driven self-assembly.

The synthesis and characterization of three new supramolecular complexes 6-8 (a rhomboid and two hexagons) via coordination-driven self-assembly are reported in excellent yields (>90%). These assemblies have 2,6-di(4,4'-dipyridyl)-9-thiabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane 2 as the bridging tecton. All assemblies were characterized by multinuclear NMR (1H and 31P), mass spectrometry (ESI-MS and ESI-FT-ICR), and elemental analysis. The X-ray structure of the 120 degrees tecton 2 is also discussed.

Incorporating a flexible crown ether into neutral discrete self-assemblies driven by metal coordination.

Driven by metal coordination, a flexible crown ether was self-assembled into neutral discrete complexes with two organoplatinum acceptors. Specifically, a [1 + 1]-assembled structure was separated from self-assemblies with different stoichiometries by vapor diffusion of acetone into their dichloromethane solution. The formation of these crown ether-incorporated self-assemblies was confirmed by NMR, elemental analysis, and X-ray single-crystal analysis.

Structure and magnetic properties of a hydroxo-bridged copper(II) distorted cubane stabilized via supramolecular hydrogen bonding with an ionic hexafluoroacetylacetonate.

Tetranuclear [Cu(II)4(OH)4(aib)4)](hfac)4 (1; aib = 2-methyl-2-amino-4-iminopentane; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) forms from the reaction of aqueous ammonia and Cu(hfac)2.2H2O in acetone. The structure of 1 reveals that four noncoordinating hfac- counterions stabilize the distorted cubane complex via multiple H-bonding contacts. Magnetic susceptibility studies reveal that cubane-like 1 is best described as a pair of independent antiferromagnetically coupled dimers with g = 2.10 and J/kB = -298 K (207 cm(-1)) (H = -2JS1.S2).

Solvent effects on the structural and formyl substrate reactivity properties of a nitrogen/sulfur-ligated zinc hydroxide complex.

The solution structural and formyl substrate reactivity properties of a nitrogen/sulfur-ligated zinc hydroxide complex, [(bmnpaZn)2(mu-OH)2](ClO4)2 (1, bmnpa = N,N-bis-2-(methylthio)ethyl-N-((6-neopentylamino-2-pyridyl)methyl)amine), in acetonitrile and methanol are reported. In CH3CN, 1 has a binuclear cation [(bmnpaZn)2(mu-OH)2]2+ that is stabilized by secondary hydrogen bonding and CH/pi interactions involving the bmnpa chelate ligand. In CH3OH, 1 undergoes reaction with solvent to yield a zinc methoxide species, as determined by 1H NMR and electrospray mass spectral analysis. Treatment of 1 with methyl formate in CH3CN results in stoichiometric hydrolysis of the formyl ester to produce [(bmnpa)Zn(O2CH)]ClO4 (2) and methanol. The formate complex was identified via independent synthesis and characterization (X-ray crystallography, 1H and 13C NMR, FTIR, LRFAB-MS, conductance, and elemental analysis). In the solid state, 2n has a formate-bridged coordination polymer-type structure. However, in CH3CN, 2 behaves as 1:1 electrolyte, indicating cleavage of the polymer structure into mononuclear [(bmnpa)Zn(O2CH)]ClO4 species. Treatment of 1 with a stoichiometric amount of formanilide in CH3CN for 48 h at 45 degrees C results in decomposition of the zinc hydroxide complex to yield the free bmnpa ligand and an inorganic solid, presumably a zinc hydroxide or oxide species. Treatment of 1 with a stoichiometric amount of ethyl formate in CD3OD results in rapid, quantitative transesterification of the formyl carboxylate ester. A control reaction indicates that this transesterification reaction does not occur on the same time scale in the absence of the catalyst. Treatment of 1 with an excess of ethyl formate in CD3OD results in catalytic formyl carboxylate ester transesterification, with approximately 1000 turnovers in 60 min at 22(1) degrees C. Treatment of a CD3OD solution of 1 (0.5 equiv) with formanilide (1 equiv) results in the formation of aniline, d3-methyl formate, and the zinc formate complex 2. While aniline is produced stoichiometrically, the yield of d3-methyl formate varied from 30 to 50%, and the yield of 2 varied from 50 to 70% in repetitive experiments. Formation of both d3-methyl formate and 2 indicates that both methanolysis and hydrolysis reactions take place.

Aliphatic carbon-carbon bond cleavage reactivity of a mononuclear Ni(II) cis-beta-keto-enolate complex in the presence of base and O2: a model reaction for acireductone dioxygenase (ARD).

The synthesis, characterization, and reactivity properties of a mononuclear Ni(II) cis-beta-keto-enolate complex, [(6-Ph2TPA)Ni(PhC(O)C(OH)C(O)Ph)]ClO4 (1) (6-Ph2TPA = N,N-bis((6-phenyl-2-pyridyl)methyl)-N-((2-pyridyl)methyl)amine) are reported. Complex 1 was characterized by X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, 1H NMR, and electronic absorption and infrared spectroscopy. Treatment of 1 with 1 equiv of Me4NOH.5H2O in the presence of O2 results in oxidative carbon-carbon bond cleavage and the formation of a new Ni(II) dicarboxylate complex, [(6-Ph2TPA)Ni(O2CPh)2(H2O)] (2). Complex 2 has been characterized by X-ray crystallography, 1H NMR, UV-vis, IR, and elemental analysis. Use of 18O2 in the reaction of 1 to produce 2 results in the incorporation of one 18O atom per carboxylate ligand in the majority of the sample. Production of CO in the oxidative conversion of 1 to 2 was detected using the palladium chloride method. This is the first functional model system of relevance to acireductone dioxygenase (ARD), a novel Ni(II)-containing enzyme that catalyzes a reaction that is a shunt out of the methionine salvage pathway in K. pneumoniae.

Synthesis and structural characterization of carborane-containing neutral, self-assembled Pt-metallacycles.

[structure: see text] We have combined carborane chemistry with the newly developed directional bonding strategy to synthesize neutral macrocycles. The m- and p-carborane dicarboxylates were utilized as the donor linkers in conjunction with 1,8-bis[trans-Pt(PEt3)2NO3]anthracene 3, 2,9-bis[trans-Pt(PEt3)2NO3]phenanthrene 5, and cis-Pt(PEt3)2(NO3)2 unit 6. Three new platinum-based macrocycles, 4, 7, and 8, were thus synthesized. 31P{1H} NMR as well as the X-ray characterization of Pt-metallacycles reveal the formation of single highly symmetrical neutral species.

Structural and spectroscopic demonstration of agostic C-C interactions in electron-deficient metallacyclobutanes and related cage complexes: possible implications for olefin polymerizations and metatheses.

The reaction of the half-open titanocene, Ti(C5H5)(c-C8H11)(PMe3) (c-C8H11 = cyclooctadienyl), with two equivalents of PhC2SiMe3 leads to their incorporation and coupling to the dienyl fragment. One alkyne inserts into a C-H bond of the central CH2 group of the c-C8H11 ligand's edge-bridge, while the second undergoes a 5+2 coupling with the dienyl fragment, yielding coordinated sigma-allyl and olefin fragments, as demonstrated by X-ray diffraction. Together with the C5H5 and PMe3 coordinations, this leads to a 14-electron count. While the very electron-deficient titanium center passes up potential pi coordination of the allyl fragment, it instead engages in interactions with one or two C-C bonds, and perhaps a C-H bond, as revealed from the structural and spectroscopic data. Similar interactions have been found in electron-deficient metallacyclobutane complexes of titanium and zirconium, but not in the 18-electron molybdenum and tungsten analogues. These and other observations may have implications relating to metatheses and polymerizations of olefins.

Thioester hydrolysis reactivity of zinc hydroxide complexes: investigating reactivity relevant to glyoxalase II enzymes.

A recently reported binuclear zinc hydroxide complex [(L(1)Zn(2))(mu-OH)](ClO(4))(2) (, L(1) = 2,6-bis[(bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino)methyl]-4-methylphenolate monoanion) containing a single bridging hydroxide was examined for thioester hydrolysis reactivity. Treatment of it with hydroxyphenylthioacetic acid S-methyl ester in dry CD(3)CN results in no reaction after approximately 65 h at 45(1) degrees C. Binuclear zinc hydroxide complexes of the N-methyl-N-((6-neopentylamino-2-pyridyl)methyl)-N-((2-pyridyl)methyl)amine (L(2)) and N-methyl-N-((6-neopentylamino-2-pyridyl)methyl)-N-((2-pyridyl)ethyl)amine (L(3)) chelate ligands were prepared by treatment of each ligand with molar equivalent amounts of Zn(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O and KOH in methanol. These complexes, [(L(2)Zn)(2)(mu-OH)(2)](ClO(4))(2) and [(L(3)Zn)(2)(mu-OH)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (), which have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, behave as 1 : 1 electrolytes in acetonitrile, indicating that the binuclear cations dissociate into monomeric zinc hydroxide species in solution. Treatment of them with one equivalent of hydroxyphenylthioacetic acid S-methyl ester per zinc center in acetonitrile results in the formation of a zinc alpha-hydroxycarboxylate complex, [(L(2))Zn(O(2)CCH(OH)Ph)]ClO(4).1.5H(2)O or [(L(3))Zn(O(2)CCH(OH)Ph)]ClO(4).1.5H(2)O, and CH(3)SH. These reactions, to our knowledge, are the first reported examples of thioester hydrolysis mediated by zinc hydroxide complexes. The results of this study suggest that a terminal Zn-OH moiety may be required for hydrolysis reactivity with a thioester substrate.

A deprotonated intermediate in the amide methanolysis reaction of an N4O-ligated mononuclear zinc complex.

Treatment of [(ppbpa)Zn](ClO4)2 (1(ClO4)2, ppbpa = N-((6-(pivaloylamido)-2-pyridyl)methyl)-N,N-bis((2-pyridyl)methyl)amine) with 1 equiv of Me(4)NOH.5H(2)O in methanol-acetonitrile solution results within minutes in the stoichiometric formation of a complex having a deprotonated amide, [(ppbpa-)Zn]ClO4 (3). Complex 3 has been characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, FTIR, and elemental analysis. Notably, upfield shifts of specific 1H NMR resonances of the amide-appended pyridyl moiety in 3, versus those found for 1(ClO4)2, indicate delocalization of the anionic charge within the amide-appended pyridyl donor of this complex. Heating of analytically pure 3 in methanol-acetonitrile results in amide alcoholysis. Overall, this alcoholysis reaction is second-order, with a first-order dependence on both 3 and methanol. Analysis of the rate of decay of 3 as a function of temperature yielded activation parameters consistent with an intramolecular amide cleavage process (DeltaH++ = 15.0(3) kcal/mol, DeltaS++ = -33(1) eu). A possible reaction mechanism for amide alcoholysis is presented which involves reaction of the deprotonated amide intermediate 3 with methanol to produce a Lewis activated-type structure from which amide cleavage may be initiated. Additional support for this mechanistic pathway has been obtained through examination of the analogous ethanolysis reaction and via evaluation of the effect of varying steric hindrance near the amide carbonyl unit.

Structure and magnetic properties of (meso-tetraphenylporphinato)manganese(III) bis(dithiolato)nickelates.

The crystal structures of [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2} [MnTPP = (meso-tetraphenylporphinato)manganese(III)] and [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} have been determined. These salts possess trans-mu-coordination of S = 1/2 {Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2}*- and {Ni[S(2)C(2)(CN)(2)](2)}*- to Mn(III) and form parallel 1-D coordination polymer chains exhibiting nu(CN) at 2210 and 2200 and 2220 and 2212 cm(-1), respectively. The bis(dithiolato) monoanions are planar and bridge two cations with MnN distances of 2.339(16), and 2.394(3) A, respectively, which are comparable to related MnN distances observed for [MnTPP][TCNE].x(solvates). In addition, [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} {H2TP'P = meso-tetrakis[3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin] and [MnTP'P(OH2)]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} were prepared. The latter forms isolated paramagnetic ions. The room-temperature values of chiT for 1-D [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2}, [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}, and [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} are 2.55, 3.28, and 2.86 emu K/mol, respectively. Susceptibility (chi) measurements between 2 and 300 K reveal weak antiferromagnetic interactions with theta= -5.9 and -0.2 K for [MnTPP]{Ni[S(2)C(2)H(CN)](2)} and [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}, respectively, and stronger antiferromagnetic coupling of -50 K for [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} from fits of chi(T) to the Curie-Weiss law. The 1-D intrachain coupling, J(intra), of [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2} and [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} was determined from modeling chiT(T) by the Seiden expression (H = -2JSi.Sj) with J/kB = -8.00 K (-5.55 cm(-1); -0.65 meV) for [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2}, J/kB = -3.00 K (-2.08 cm(-1); -0.25 meV) for [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}, and J/kB = -122 K (-85 cm(-1)) for [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}. These observed negative J(intra)/kB values are indicative of antiferromagnetic coupling. These materials order as ferrimagnets at 5.5, 2.3, and 8.0 K, for [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2}, [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}, and [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}, respectively, based upon the temperature at which maximum in the 10 Hz chi'(T) data occurs. [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} has a coercivity of 17,700 Oe and remanent magnetizations of 7250 emu Oe/mol at 2 K and 17 Oe and 850 emu Oe/mol at 5 K; hence, upon cooling it goes from being a soft magnet to being a very hard magnet.

Chemistry of a Ni(II) acetohydroxamic acid complex: formation, reactivity with water, and attempted preparation of zinc and cobalt analogues.

Mononuclear Ni(II), Co(II), and Zn(II) complexes of the bppppa (N,N-bis[(6-phenyl-2-pyridyl)methyl]-N-[(6-pivaloylamido-2-pyridyl)methyl]amine) ligand have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, 1H NMR, UV-vis (Ni(II) and Co(II)) and infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Each complex has the empirical formula [(bppppa)M](ClO4)2 (M = Ni(II), 2; Zn(II), 3; Co(II), 4) and in the solid state exhibits a metal center having a coordination number of five; albeit, the cation of 2 also has a sixth weak interaction involving a perchlorate anion. Treatment of [(bppppa)Ni](ClO4)2 (2) with 1 equiv of acetohydroxamic acid results in the formation of [(bppppa)Ni(HONHC(O)CH3)](ClO4)2 (1), a novel Ni(II) complex having a coordinated neutral acetohydroxamic acid ligand. In 1, one phenyl-appended pyridyl donor of the bppppa chelate ligand is dissociated from the metal center and acts as a hydrogen bond acceptor for the hydroxyl group of the bound acetohydroxamic acid ligand. Treatment of 1 with excess water results in the formation of 2 and free acetohydroxamic acid. We hypothesize that this reaction occurs due to disruption of the intramolecular hydrogen bonding interaction involving the bound acid. In this series of reactions, the bppppa ligand exhibits behavior reminiscent of a type III hemilabile ligand in terms of one phenylpyridyl donor. Treatment of 3 or 4 with acetohydroxamic acid results in no reaction, indicating that the bppppa-ligated Ni(II) derivative 2 exhibits unique coordination chemistry with respect to reaction with acetohydroxamic acid within this series of complexes. We attribute this reactivity to the ability of the bppppa-ligated Ni(II) center to adopt a pseudo-octahedral geometry, whereas the Zn(II) and Co(II) complexes retain five coordinate metal centers.

Self-assembly of neutral platinum-based supramolecular ensembles incorporating oxocarbon dianions and oxalate.

Five neutral platinum-based macrocycles incorporating cyclic oxocarbondianions, squarate and croconate and their acyclic analogue, oxalate, have been synthesized in 90-95% yield via self-assembly. The combination of the diplatinum molecular clip with all three dianions afforded molecular rectangles, whereas a platinum-based 60 degrees acceptor unit produced a supramolecular rhomboid with croconate ion but a triangle with squarate ion. In all cases, multinuclear NMR spectra were consistent with the formation of single highly symmetrical species. The three rectanglular and the rhomboid assemblies were characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The triangular species was characterized by FAB mass spectrometry.
