The dissociation dynamics of He...I 35Cl(B,v'=2,3) complexes with varying amounts of internal energy.

The He...I (35)Cl intermolecular vibrational levels with n'=0-6 that are bound within the He+ICl(B,v'=3) potential [A. B. McCoy, J. P. Darr, D. S. Boucher, P. R. Winter, M. D. Bradke, and R. A. Loomis, J. Chem. Phys. 120, 2677 (2004)] are identified in laser-induced fluorescence experiments performed at very low temperatures within a supersonic expansion. Comparisons of the positions and intensities of these lines with the excitation spectra, calculated using potential surfaces to describe the interactions between the helium atom and ICl in its ground and excited state, assist in the assignments. Based on these comparisons the excited state potential was rescaled so that the experimental and calculated J'=0 energies agree to within the experimental uncertainties for all but the lowest, n'=0, intermolecular level. Two-laser, action, and pump-probe spectroscopy experiments indicate that the bound He...I (35)Cl(B,v'=3) intermolecular vibrational levels undergo vibrational predissociation forming rotationally excited I (35)Cl(B,v'=2,j') products with distributions that depend upon the initial intermolecular vibrational level excited. Action spectra recorded in the ICl B-X, 2-0 region while monitoring the Deltav=0, I (35)Cl(B,v'=2) channel reveal two additional dissociation mechanisms for the He...I (35)Cl(B,v') excited state complexes: rotational predissociation of discrete metastable states lying slightly above the He+I (35)Cl(B,v'=2) asymptote and direct dissociation that occurs when the linear conformer is excited to the continuum of states above the same asymptote. The rotational predissociation pathway forms I (35)Cl(B,v'=2,j') products in all of the rotational states energetically accessible. The direct dissociation mechanism yields very cold rotational product state distributions; for instance, the average rotational energy in the product state distribution measured when the linear complexes are prepared 20 cm(-1) above the dissociation limit is only 1.51 cm(-1), representing only 7.6% of the available energy.

Femtosecond study of Cu(H(2)O) dynamics.

The short-time nuclear dynamics of Cu(H(2)O) is investigated using femtosecond photodetachment-photoionization spectroscopy and time-dependent quantum wave packet calculations. The Cu(H(2)O) dynamics is initiated in the electronic ground state of the complex by electron photodetachment from the Cu(-)(H(2)O) complex, where hydrogen atoms are oriented toward Cu. Several time-resolved resonant multiphoton ionization schemes are used to probe the ensuing reorientation and dissociation. Immediately following photodetachment, the neutral complex is far from its minimum energy geometry and possesses an internal energy comparable to the Cu-H(2)O dissociation energy and undergoes both large-amplitude H(2)O motion and dissociation. Dissociation is observed to occur on three distinct time scales: 0.6, 8, and 100 ps. These results are compared to the results of time-dependent J=0 wave packet calculations, propagating the initial anion vibrational wave functions on the ground-state potential of the neutral complex. An excellent agreement is obtained between the experimental results and the ionization signals derived from the calculated probability amplitudes. Related experiments and calculations are carried out on the Cu(D(2)O) complex, with results very similar to those of Cu(H(2)O).

A theoretical and computational study of the anion, neutral, and cation Cu(H(2)O) complexes.

An ab initio investigation of the potential energy surfaces and vibrational energies and wave functions of the anion, neutral, and cation Cu(H(2)O) complexes is presented. The equilibrium geometries and harmonic frequencies of the three charge states of Cu(H(2)O) are calculated at the MP2 level of theory. CCSD(T) calculations predict a vertical electron detachment energy for the anion complex of 1.65 eV and a vertical ionization potential for the neutral complex of 6.27 eV. Potential energy surfaces are calculated for the three charge states of the copper-water complexes. These potential energy surfaces are used in variational calculations of the vibrational wave functions and energies and from these, the dissociation energies D(0) of the anion, neutral, and cation charge states of Cu(H(2)O) are predicted to be 0.39, 0.16, and 1.74 eV, respectively. In addition, the vertical excitation energies, that correspond to the 4 (2)P<--4 (2)S transition of the copper atom, and ionization potentials of the neutral Cu(H(2)O) are calculated over a range of Cu(H(2)O) configurations. In hydrogen-bonded, Cu-HOH configurations, the vertical excitation and ionization energies are blueshifted with respect to the corresponding values for atomic copper, and in Cu-OH(2) configurations where the copper atom is located near the oxygen end of water, both quantities are redshifted.

Quantum and classical studies of vibrational motion of CH5+ on a global potential energy surface obtained from a novel ab initio direct dynamics approach.

We report a full dimensional, ab initio based potential energy surface for CH(5) (+). The ab initio electronic energies and gradients are obtained in direct-dynamics calculations using second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory with the correlation consistent polarized valence triple zeta basis. The potential energy and the dipole moment surfaces are fit using novel procedures that ensure the full permutational symmetry of the system. The fitted potential energy surface is tested by comparing it against additional electronic energy calculations and by comparing normal mode frequencies at the three lowest-lying stationary points obtained from the fit against ab initio ones. Well-converged diffusion Monte Carlo zero-point energies, rotational constants, and projections along the CH and HH bond lengths and the tunneling coordinates are presented and compared with the corresponding harmonic oscillator and standard classical molecular dynamics ones. The delocalization of the wave function is analyzed through comparison of the CH(5) (+) distributions with those obtained when all of the hydrogen atoms are replaced by (2)H and (3)H. The classical dipole correlation function is examined as a function of the total energy. This provides a further probe of the delocalization of CH(5) (+).

Combined experimental/theoretical investigation of the He+ICl interactions. I. Rovibronic spectrum of He...ICl complexes in the ICl B-X, 3-0 region.

Transitions of two different stereoisomers of the He...ICl(X,v" = 0) weakly bound complex, one with a T-shaped orientation and another that is most likely linear, have been observed in laser-induced fluorescence experiments performed in the ICl B-X region. Here we present experimental and theoretical results aimed at confirming the previous assignments and at gaining additional insights into the He+ICl interactions. High resolution action spectra were recorded in the same region to identify those features that could be attributed to transitions of the He...I35Cl(X,v" = 0) isomers and not to higher-order complexes, Hen...I35Cl, where n > or = 2, or I37Cl containing species. Calculations of the rovibronic spectra of the He...I35Cl complexes in the ICl B-X, 2-0 and 3-0 regions were performed using an ab initio potential energy surface for the He+ICl(X,v" = 0) ground state and two different pairwise additive potentials for the He+ICl(B,v' = 2,3) excited states. The rotation-vibration energies and wave functions for the He cdots, three dots, centered I35Cl complexes were obtained for all bound states with total angular momentum J < 10 using both of these potentials. Electronic spectra were generated using these results, assuming that the transition moment lies along the ICl bond and is not perturbed by the presence of the helium atom. The calculations qualitatively reproduce the He cdots, three dots, centered I35Cl action spectrum and strongly support the previous assignments. The calculations also indicate that some of the spectral congestion observed near the linear band may be attributed to transitions of the linear isomer to multiple intermolecular levels in the excited state. Coriolis coupling strongly mixes He cdots, three dots, centered ICl(B,v') states with rotational excitation, making simulations and assignments of the linear band observed in the experimental spectrum difficult.

Time resolved solvent rearrangement dynamics.

Ultrafast pump-probe studies of I2- recombination in size-selected I2- (CO2)n cluster ions demonstrate long time coherent motions in size-selected clusters and the resulting non-statistical energy flow in the cluster. For I2- photodissociated to produce either I- + I or I- + I*, we identify a solvent-driven energy transfer process without a condensed phase counterpart. The mechanism involved is a Marcus-like solvent-driven curve crossing, with the driving force arising from asymmetric solvation, not just from solvent orientation. By substituting another halogen for one I atom, we "break" the I2- symmetry, and thus obtain direct information on the electron transfer process. New experiments on IBr- (CO2)n photodissociation products confirm the behavior suspected in the I2- studies. Time-resolved experiments on IBr- and theoretical modeling of the dynamics provide quantitative information on the multiple curve crossings encountered in the recombination process. In related investigations, femtosecond negative ion-neutral-positive ion charge reversal apparatus is employed to investigate transient neutral species evolving along a reaction coordinate. We report studies of the rearrangement dynamics of Cu(OH2) produced by photodetachment of the corresponding anion. Following a controlled delay period, a second ultrafast tunable laser pulse initiates resonant multiphoton photoionization of the time-evolving Cu...OH2 complex. The time-resolved Cu+ and Cu+(OH2) signals provide information both on the prompt dissociation of the complex and on energy redistribution between internal rotational and radial modes of the evolving complex. Calculations of the time evolution of the anion geometric configuration on the neutral potential energy surface yield deeper insight into the nature of the rearrangement process and the energy flow within the complex.
