Ethical aspects for veterinarians regarding antimicrobial drug use in Italy.

Antimicrobial drugs are used in the treatment and control of many types of infections in a wide variety of animal species. As more antibiotics were discovered and introduced to veterinary clinical practice, it became clear that choice among rational agents needed to be guided by the agreement of antibiotic policies or 'ethical' measures. Prudent use of antimicrobial drugs is an integral part of good veterinary practice; it is an attitude to maximise therapeutic efficacy and to minimise selection of resistant microorganisms. This paper presents an overview of the judicious use of antimicrobial agents in animals, with particular emphasis on ethical aspects.

Animal welfare and protection during transport: the current legislative framework in European Union.

The Protocol on the protection and welfare of animals annexed to the Amsterdam Treaty (1997) establishing the European Community requires that in formulating and implementing agriculture and transport policies, the Community and the Member States shall pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals. In the field of animal welfare, transport has been, and still is today, cause of much controversy. Council Directive 91/628/EEC, amended by Directive 95/29/EC, constitutes the current Community legislative framework. In the light of experience gained under Directive 91/628/EEC at harmonising Community legislation on the transport of animals, and the difficulties encountered due to the diverse transposition of that Directive at national level, it was more appropriate to set out Community rules in this field in a regulation. In fact Council Regulations (EC) no. 97/1255, no 98/411 and no. 2005/1 were adopted subsequently to provide more detailed rules. This paper is aimed to review the current EU legislation affecting the animal transport.

Spontaneous tumours of pet dog as models for human cancers: searching for adequate guidelines.

Despite the ongoing search for "replacement" alternatives, animal models continue to play a crucial role in bio-medical research. However, both in vivo and in vitro models usually employed, such as rodents and/or cell lines, display intrinsic limits related to the specific characteristics of the biological systems used, whose management is very complex, and whose pathology, usually induced under artificial laboratory conditions, is frequently dissimilar to the studied human spontaneous disease. It has been suggested that carrying out clinical trials based on pre-clinical data obtained after a screening on animal models developing the neoplastic disease in a more similar way to human beings, as represented by spontaneous canine tumours, could accelerate the entry of new effective drugs into the clinical practice. In this paper the authors discuss the scientific foundation as well as the ethic and legal concerns related to the use of this "pet model" in comparative oncology, suggesting some "key words" as the necessary starting point for a correct approach to the matter.
