We report a patient with localized focus of the bone destruction due to a rare disease, solitary bone plasmacytoma (SBP). The patient suffered from arthritis, mimicking seronegative rheumatoid arthritis. To our knowledge, it is the first description of coexistence of arthritis and SBP.

Serum level of endostatin, a natural angiogenesis inhibitor, was measured in 12 patients with hyperthyroidism and 9 patients with hypothyroidism. Control values were obtained from 12 healthy individuals. Hyperthyroidism was shown to be associated with an increased level of endostatin and hypothyroidism with a decreased endostatin level. There was no correlation of serum endostatin with thyroid hormone levels. Endostatin is a fragment of type XVIII collagen, and it is possible that reported changes are related to the effect of thyroid hormones on connective tissue metabolism.
BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a disease characterized by widespread fibrosis of the skin and multiple organs, including the lungs. This study was designed to evaluate pulmonary function in SSc patients without symptoms of lung involvement. METHODS: Spirometric measurements were done in 26 female SSC patients without symptoms of pulmonary involvement. RESULTS: Maximal voluntary ventilation was found to be decreased in half of the patients, and forced vital capacity was decreased in 23% of the patients. Forced expiratory flow rate was impaired in about half of the SSc patients, especially the flow at 50-75% of forced vital capacity. Peak expiratory flow rate was decreased in 77% of asymptomatic patients. CONCLUSIONS: A functional defect, mainly of the restrictive type, was observed in the majority of asymptomatic patients with SSc. Pulmonary function testing is recommended for all SSc patients.

Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is one of the main inflammatory mediators associated with development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Deficiency in secretion of the natural IL-1 antagonist was found in RA patients, and enhanced joint inflammation. This finding was confirmed by numerous studies using the animal model of the disease. Two randomized, multicenter clinical trials with anakinra, a recombinant IL-1 receptor antagonist (rHHHuIL-1Ra), revealed that application of anakinra with or without methotrexate induces remission (ACR 20) in 38-71% of patients with RA. Induction of remission was dose and treatment-time-dependent. The present paper reviews theoretical application of rHuIL-1Ra in patients with RA and summarizes results of published clinical trials of the drug.
Leptin, a satiety hormone is a protein produced by the adipose tissue that regulates appetite and energetic balance of the body. Results of investigations of serum leptin in patients with hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism are controversial. Influence of thyroid hormones on leptin secretion is complex and partially unrecognized.
