Polychromatic interface solitons in nonlinear photonic lattices.

We demonstrate that interfaces between two nonlinear periodic photonic lattices offer unique possibilities for controlling the nonlinear interaction between different spectral components of polychromatic light, and a change in the light spectrum can have a dramatic effect on the propagation along the interface. We predict the existence of polychromatic surface solitons that differ fundamentally from their counterparts in infinite lattices.

Soliton dynamics in deformable nonlinear lattices.

We describe wave propagation and soliton localization in photonic lattices, which are induced in a nonlinear medium by an optical interference pattern, taking into account the inherent lattice deformations at the soliton location. We obtain exact analytical solutions and identify the key factors defining soliton mobility, including the effects of gap merging and lattice imbalance, underlying the differences with discrete and gap solitons in conventional photonic structures.

Discrete surface solitons in semi-infinite binary waveguide arrays.

We analyze discrete surface modes in semi-infinite binary waveguide arrays, which can support simultaneously two types of discrete solitons. We demonstrate that the analysis of linear surface states in such arrays provides important information about the existence of nonlinear surface modes and their properties. We find numerically the families of both discrete surface solitons and nonlinear Tamm (gap) states and study their stability properties.

Demonstration of all-optical beam steering in modulated photonic lattices.

We demonstrate experimentally all-optical beam steering in modulated photonic lattices induced optically by three-beam interference in a biased photorefractive crystal. We identify and characterize the key physical parameters governing the beam steering and show that the spatial resolution can be enhanced by the additional effect of nonlinear beam self-localization.

Enhanced soliton transport in quasiperiodic lattices with introduced aperiodicity.

We study linear transmission and nonlinear soliton transport through quasiperiodic structures, where the lattice profiles are described by multiple modulation frequencies. We show that resonant scattering at mixed-frequency resonances limits transmission efficiency of localized wave packets, leading to radiation and possible trapping of solitons. We obtain an explicit analytical expression for optimal quasiperiodic lattice profiles, where additional aperiodic modulations suppress mixed-frequency resonances, resulting in dramatic enhancement of soliton mobility. Our results can be applied to the design of photonic waveguide structures, and arrays of magnetic micro-traps for atomic Bose-Einstein condensates.

Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling in two-dimensional photonic lattices.

We report on the first experimental observation of photonic Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling in two-dimensional periodic systems. We study the propagation of an optical beam in a square lattice superimposed on a refractive index ramp. We observe oscillations of the beam inside the first Brilloin zone and tunneling of light from the first to the higher-order bands of the lattice band gap spectrum.

Reduced-symmetry two-dimensional solitons in photonic lattices.

We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a novel type of localized beam supported by the combined effects of total internal and Bragg reflection in nonlinear two-dimensional square periodic structures. Such localized states exhibit strong anisotropy in their mobility properties, being highly mobile in one direction and trapped in the other, making them promising candidates for optical routing in nonlinear lattices.

Azimuthons: spatially modulated vortex solitons.

We introduce a novel class of spatially localized self-trapped ringlike singular optical beams in nonlinear media, the so-called azimuthons, which appear due to a continuous azimuthal deformation of vortex solitons. We demonstrate that the azimuthons are characterized by two independent integer indices, the topological charge m and the number N of the intensity peaks along the ring. Each soliton family includes azimuthons with negative, positive, and zero angular velocity.

Complete band gaps in one-dimensional left-handed periodic structures.

Artificially fabricated structures with periodically modulated parameters such as photonic crystals offer novel ways of controlling the flow of light due to the existence of a range of forbidden frequencies associated with a photonic band gap. It is believed that modulation of the refractive index in all three spatial dimensions is required to open a complete band gap and prevent the propagation of electromagnetic waves in all directions. Here we reveal that, in sharp contrast to what was known before and contrary to the accepted physical intuition, a one-dimensional periodic structure containing the layers of transparent left-handed (or negative-index) metamaterial can trap light in three-dimensional space due to the existence of a complete band gap.

Tunable positive and negative refraction in optically induced photonic lattices.

We study tunable refraction of light in one-dimensional periodic lattices induced optically in a photorefractive crystal. We observe experimentally both positive and negative refraction of beams that selectively excite the first or second spectral bands of the periodic lattice, and we demonstrate tunability of the output beam position by dynamically adjusting the lattice depth. At higher laser intensities, beam broadening due to diffraction can be suppressed through nonlinear self-focusing while preserving the general steering properties.

Soliton control and bloch-wave filtering in periodic photonic lattices.

We suggest a novel approach to soliton control and routing based on Bloch-wave filtering in periodic photonic structures. Taking a binary waveguide array as an example, we demonstrate that spatial solitons that belong to different spectral gaps can be selectively reflected from or transmitted through an engineered defect, which acts as a low- or high-pass filter for Bloch waves.

Coherence controlled soliton interactions.

We demonstrate theoretically and subsequently observe in experiment a novel type of soliton interaction when a pair of closely spaced spatial optical solitons as a whole is made partially incoherent. We explain how the character of the soliton interaction can be controlled by the total partial incoherence, and show a possibility to change the soliton interaction from attractive to repulsive, or vice versa, near a certain threshold in the coherence parameter.

Observation of discrete gap solitons in binary waveguide arrays.

We report an experimental study of discrete gap solitons in binary arrays of optical waveguides. We observe self-focusing indicating soliton generation when the inclination angle of an input beam is slightly above the Bragg angle and show that the propagation direction of the emerging gap soliton is influenced by the effect of interband momentum exchange.

Bifurcations and stability of gap solitons in periodic potentials.

We analyze the existence, stability, and internal modes of gap solitons in nonlinear periodic systems described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a sinusoidal potential, such as photonic crystals, waveguide arrays, optically-induced photonic lattices, and Bose-Einstein condensates loaded onto an optical lattice. We study bifurcations of gap solitons from the band edges of the Floquet-Bloch spectrum, and show that gap solitons can appear near all lower or upper band edges of the spectrum, for focusing or defocusing nonlinearity, respectively. We show that, in general, two types of gap solitons can bifurcate from each band edge, and one of those two is always unstable. A gap soliton corresponding to a given band edge is shown to possess a number of internal modes that bifurcate from all band edges of the same polarity. We demonstrate that stability of gap solitons is determined by location of the internal modes with respect to the spectral bands of the inverted spectrum and, when they overlap, complex eigenvalues give rise to oscillatory instabilities of gap solitons.

Controlled generation and steering of spatial gap solitons.

We demonstrate the first fully controlled generation of immobile and slow spatial gap solitons in nonlinear periodic systems with band-gap spectra, and observe the key features of gap solitons that distinguish them from discrete solitons, including a dynamical transformation of gap solitons due to nonlinear interband coupling. We also describe theoretically and confirm experimentally the effect of the anomalous steering of gap solitons in optically induced photonic lattices.

Asymmetric vortex solitons in nonlinear periodic lattices.

We reveal the existence of asymmetric vortex solitons in ideally symmetric periodic lattices and show how such nonlinear localized structures describing elementary circular flows can be analyzed systematically using the energy-balance relations. We present the examples of rhomboid, rectangular, and triangular vortex solitons on a square lattice and also describe novel coherent states where the populations of clockwise and anticlockwise vortex modes change periodically due to a nonlinearity-induced momentum exchange through the lattice. Asymmetric vortex solitons are expected to exist in different nonlinear lattice systems, including optically induced photonic lattices, nonlinear photonic crystals, and Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices.

Nonlinear BLOCH-wave interaction and bragg scattering in optically induced lattices.

We study, both theoretically and experimentally, the Bragg scattering of light in optically induced photonic lattices and reveal the key physical mechanisms which govern the nonlinear self-action of narrow beams under the combined effects of Bragg scattering and wave diffraction, allowing for selecting bands with different effective dispersion.

Observation of transverse instabilities in optically induced lattices.

We study experimentally the Bloch-wave instabilities in optically induced photonic lattices. We reveal two different instability scenarios associated with either the transverse modulational instability of a single Bloch wave or the nonlinear interband coupling between different Bloch waves. We show that the transverse instability is greatly enhanced in the induced lattice in comparison with homogeneous media.
