DNA unzipping and the unbinding of directed polymers in a random media.

We consider the unbinding of a directed polymer in a random media from a wall in d=1+1 dimensions and a simple one-dimensional model for DNA unzipping. Using the replica trick we show that the restricted partition functions of these problems are identical up to an overall normalization factor. Our finding gives an example of a generalization of the stochastic matrix form decomposition to disordered systems, a method which allows us to reduce the dimensionality of the problem. The equivalence between the two problems, for example, allows us to derive the probability distribution for finding the directed polymer a distance z from the wall. We discuss implications of these results for the related Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation and the asymmetric exclusion process.

Interference between independent fluctuating condensates.

We consider a problem of interference between two independent condensates that lack true long-range order. We show that their interference pattern contains information about correlation functions within each condensate. As an example, we analyze the interference between a pair of one-dimensional interacting Bose liquids. We find universal scaling of the average fringe contrast with system size and temperature that depends only on the Luttinger parameter. Moreover, the full distribution of the fringe contrast, which is also equivalent to the full counting statistics of the interfering atoms, changes with interaction strength and lends information on high-order correlation functions. We also demonstrate that the interference between two-dimensional condensates at finite temperature can be used as a direct probe of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Finally, we discuss the generalization of our results to describe the interference of a periodic array of independent fluctuating condensates.

Coexistence of gapless excitations and commensurate charge-density wave in the 2H transition metal dichalcogenides.

An unexpected feature common to 2H transition metal dichalcogenides ( 2H TMDs) is revealed with a first-principles Wannier function analysis of the electronic structure of the prototype 2H TaSe2: The low-energy Ta "5d(z2)" bands governing the physics of a charge-density wave (CDW) is dominated by hopping between next-nearest neighbors. With this motivation we develop a minimal effective model for the CDW formation, in which the unusual form of the hopping leads to an approximate decoupling of the three sublattices. In the CDW phase one sublattice remains undistorted, leaving the bands associated with it ungapped everywhere in the Fermi surface, resolving the long-standing puzzle of the coexistence of gapless excitations and commensurate CDW in the 2H TMDs.

Phase transition in a system of one-dimensional bosons with strong disorder.

We study one-dimensional disordered bosons at large commensurate filling. Using a real space renormalization group approach, we find a new random fixed point which controls a phase transition from a superfluid to an incompressible Mott glass. The transition can be tuned by changing the disorder distribution even with vanishing interactions. We derive the properties of the transition, which suggest that it is in the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class.

Effect of quantum fluctuations on the dipolar motion of bose-einstein condensates in optical lattices.

We reexamine dipolar motion of condensate atoms in one-dimensional optical lattices and harmonic magnetic traps including quantum fluctuations within the truncated Wigner approximation. In the strong tunneling limit we reproduce the mean field results with a sharp dynamical transition at the critical displacement. When the tunneling is reduced, on the contrary, strong quantum fluctuations lead to finite damping of condensate oscillations even at infinitesimal displacement. We argue that there is a smooth crossover between the chaotic classical transition at finite displacement and the superfluid-to-insulator phase transition at zero displacement. We further analyze the time dependence of the density fluctuations and of the coherence of the condensate and find several nontrivial dynamical effects, which can be observed in the present experimental conditions.
