Renewable resource-based green composites from recycled cellulose fiber and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) bioplastic.

Novel "green" composites were successfully fabricated from recycled cellulose fibers (RCF) and a bacterial polyester, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) by melt mixing technique. Various weight contents (15%, 30%, and 40%) of the fibers were incorporated in the PHBV matrix. The effect of the fiber weight contents on the thermal, mechanical, and dynamic-mechanical thermal properties of PHBV was investigated and a comparative property analysis was performed with RCF-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites. The tensile and storage moduli of the PHBV-based composites were improved by 220% and 190%, respectively, by reinforcement with 40 wt % RCF. Halpin-Tsai and Tsai-Pagano's equations were applied for the theoretical modeling of the tensile modulus of PHBV-based composites. The heat deflection temperature (HDT) of the PHBV-based composites was increased from 105 to 131 degrees C, while the coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE) value was reduced by 70% upon reinforcement with 40 wt % RCF. The PHBV-based composites had also shown better tensile and storage moduli and lower CLTE values than PP-based composites. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to study the melting behavior, thermal stability, and morphology of the composite systems, respectively.

Characterization and thermophysical properties of unsaturated polyester-layered silicate nanocomposites.

The thermophysical properties of unsaturated polyester (UPE) nanocomposites reinforced by organo-montmorillonite clay nanoplatelets are reported. The organo-clay nanoplatelets were sonicated in acetone for 2 hours to be dispersed in the UPE matrix. Vacuum extraction removed not only the acetone but also the styrene present in the UPE solution. The same mechanical and thermophysical properties of UPE were regained after adding the lost amount of styrene to the UPE solution. Both delaminated and intercalated clay morphologies were observed by transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the sonication process was effective to delaminate clay nanoplatelets for more homogeneous dispersion, dependent on organic chemical modifications for clay nanoplatelets. A higher storage modulus enhancement was obtained when the organo-clay nanoplatelets were delaminated and more homogeneously dispersed. The reinforcing effect of both delaminated and intercalated clay nanoplatelets was theoretically evaluated with the Halpin-Tsai equations. It was evaluated that the aspect ratio of delaminated clay nanoplatelets was approximately 150. The increase of the storage modulus below and above the glass transition temperature was achieved without reducing glass transition temperature and Izod impact strength with increasing clay content.

Recent advances in biodegradable nanocomposites.

There is growing interest in developing bio-based products and innovative process technologies that can reduce the dependence on fossil fuel and move to a sustainable materials basis. Biodegradable bio-based nanocomposites are the next generation of materials for the future. Renewable resource-based biodegradable polymers including cellulosic plastic (plastic made from wood), corn-derived plastics, and polyhydroxyalkanoates (plastics made from bacterial sources) are some of the potential biopolymers which, in combination with nanoclay reinforcement, can produce nanocomposites for a variety of applications. Nanocomposites of this category are expected to possess improved strength and stiffness with little sacrifice of toughness, reduced gas/water vapor permeability, a lower coefficient of thermal expansion, and an increased heat deflection temperature, opening an opportunity for the use of new, high performance, lightweight green nanocomposite materials to replace conventional petroleum-based composites. The present review addresses this green material, including its technical difficulties and their solutions.

Mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes and their polymer nanocomposites.

More than 10 years have passed since carbon nanotubes (CNT) have been found during observations by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Since then, one of the major applications of the CNT is the reinforcements of plastics in processing composite materials, because it was found by experiments that CNT possessed splendid mechanical properties. Various experimental methods are conducted in order to understand the mechanical properties of varieties of CNT and CNT-based composite materials. The systematized data of the past research results of CNT and their nanocomposites are extremely useful to improve processing and design criteria for new nanocomposites in further studies. Before the CNT observations, vapor grown carbon fibers (VGCF) were already utilized for composite applications, although there have been only few experimental data about the mechanical properties of VGCF. The structure of VGCF is similar to that of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and the major benefit of VGCF is less commercial price. Therefore, this review article overviews the experimental results regarding the various mechanical properties of CNT, VGCF, and their polymer nanocomposites. The experimental methods and results to measure the elastic modulus and strength of CNT and VGCF are first discussed in this article. Secondly, the different surface chemical modifications for CNT and VGCF are reviewed, because the surface chemical modifications play an important role for polymer nanocomposite processing and properties. Thirdly, fracture and fatigue properties of CNT/polymer nanocomposites are reviewed, since these properties are important, especially when these new nanocomposite materials are applied for structural applications.

Effect of titanate-based surface on hydrophilicity and interlayer spacing of montmorillonite clay for polymer nanocomposites.

The fundamental scientific investigations on structure-property correlation of organo-clay are quite valuable in understanding the interface chemistry thus to design and engineer the most effective polymer-clay nanocomposites systems. Organo alkyl-titanate derivatives have been used as reagents for the surface modification of pristine montmorillonite clay platelets. Such surface modification is validated through coordinated characterization techniques that include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). By fine-tuning the surface characteristics (controlling the hydrophilicity); effective nanodispersion in polymers by intercalation or delamination can be accomplished. The titanate-coupling agent increased the water contact angle of the clay from 6 to 44 degrees denoting significant decrease in hydrophilicity. Similarly, XRD studies revealed the increased inter-gallery spacing from 9.8 to 12.7 A. The grafting of titanate modifier on to clay surface is quantified through XPS elemental analysis and co-related with TGA. This new surface-modification method provides an effective technique to convert the hydrophilic surface of the montmorillonite clay into organophillic for polymer-clay nanocomposites.

"Green" nanocomposites from cellulose acetate bioplastic and clay: effect of eco-friendly triethyl citrate plasticizer.

"Green" nanocomposites have been successfully fabricated from cellulose acetate (CA) powder, eco-friendly triethyl citrate (TEC) plasticizer and organically modified clay. The effect of the amount of plasticizer varying from 15 to 40 wt % on the performance of the nanocomposites has been evaluated. The morphologies of these nanocomposites were evaluated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. The mechanical properties of nanocomposites are correlated with the XRD and TEM observations. Cellulosic plastic-based nanocomposites with 20 wt % TEC plasticizer and 5 wt % organoclay showed better intercalation and an exfoliated structure than the counterpart having 30/40 wt % plasticizers. The tensile strength, modulus and thermal stability of cellulosic plastic reinforced with organoclay showed a decreasing trend with an increase of plasticizer content from 20 to 40 wt %. The nano-reinforcement at the lower volume fractions (phi < or = 0.02) reduced the water vapor permeability of cellulosic plastic by 2 times and the relative permeability better fits with larger platelet aspect ratios (alpha = 150).
