Central processing technician internship--a unique learning opportunity.

A critical shortage of qualified central processing technicians and the opening of a new central processing department (CPD) were driving forces behind the development of a CPD technician internship program at one facility. Classes focused on the principles and practices of central processing, and an OR observation gave interns the opportunity to see the impact that the work of the CPD has on OR function and patient care and safety. Program evaluations have been positive, and staff vacancies have been filled with the graduates of the internship program.

Technical support assistants--a new concept in the OR.

INCREASINGLY COMPLEX TECHNOLOGY, a shortage of surgical first assistants, and the growth of surgical services provided the impetus for expanding the technical support assistant role in one facility. AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM was developed based on the job description and the participants' learning needs. PROGRAM EVALUATIONS were positive and reinforced the success of the educational program.

Operating room registered nurses internship program. A recruitment and retention strategy.

The acute nursing shortage, particularly in perioperative nursing, was a driving force for the creation of a registered nurse (RN) internship program. The program was developed according to the Association of periOperative Nurses (AORN) Standards and Recommended Practices and national practice. Program evaluations led to positive changes in the program. This article describes the process that was followed and the unique features of the program.

Preceptor preparation: an investment in the future.

Preceptor preparation is critical to the success of all orientation programs. This article focuses on the purposes of preceptor preparation and a series of programs developed for the staff of Surgical Services. The programs are leveled and focus on basic and advanced concepts. The advanced program is a means of reward and recognition for preceptors in the various surgical services areas. The programs are designed for nurses and other staff involved in precepting new employees.
