[Thrombosis of the inferior vena cava and the iliac and femoral veins in a 24-year old man].

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 24-year-old patient presented with nonspecific epigastric pain, general feebleness and weakness of both legs. The cardiopulmonary investigations were unremarkable. The abdomen was soft, without muscular resistance or local pressure tenderness. Both legs were moderately swollen without other findings. INVESTIGATIONS: The laboratory tests showed an elevated D-dimer and fibrinogen, as well as a heterozygous factor V Leiden mutation. Both duplex ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed thrombosis of the distal inferior vena cava (IVC) and both iliac and femoral veins. A short segment of the IVC between the left renal and intrahepatic veins was a-genetic. DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT AND COURSE: Anticoagulation treatment with phenprocoumon was started for the deep vein thrombosis. At the one-year follow-up no thrombosis of the vena cava and the iliac and femoral veins was detected. CONCLUSION: Thrombosis of the IVC in combination with a pelvic vein thrombosis is a rare condition in young patients. If this venous abnormality is found, thrombophilia should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Anticoagulation is the treatment of choice.

Three-dimensional recording of the human face with a 3D laser scanner.

Three-dimensional recording of the surface of the human body or of certain anatomical areas has gained an ever increasing importance in recent years. When recording living surfaces, such as the human face, not only has a varying degree of surface complexity to be accounted for, but also a variety of other factors, such as motion artefacts. It is of importance to establish standards for the recording procedure, which will optimise results and allow for better comparison and validation. In the study presented here, the faces of five male test persons were scanned in different experimental settings using non-contact 3D digitisers, type Minolta Vivid 910). Among others, the influence of the number of scanners used, the angle of recording, the head position of the test person, the impact of the examiner and of examination time on accuracy and precision of the virtual face models generated from the scanner data with specialised software were investigated. Computed data derived from the virtual models were compared to corresponding reference measurements carried out manually between defined landmarks on the test persons' faces. We describe experimental conditions that were of benefit in optimising the quality of scanner recording and the reliability of three-dimensional surface imaging. However, almost 50% of distances between landmarks derived from the virtual models deviated more than 2mm from the reference of manual measurements on the volunteers' faces.

[Transsexuals' life satisfaction after gender transformation operations].

BACKGROUND: More and more frequently, the registration of life satisfaction is being used to evaluate different medical treatments. So far, there have been only few such surveys on transsexuals (TS). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the general and the health-related life satisfaction of transsexuals after gender transformation operations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty patients took part in this German cross-sectional study. The Questions on Life Satisfaction Module (FLZ) and free questions on different aspects of the new gender identity were used as measuring instruments. RESULTS: Of the TS studied, 85-95% were "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with the results of their gender transformation operation in respect to gender identity. The TS were significantly less satisfied (P>0.001) in overall "general life satisfaction" than the general population. In overall FLZ scores for "health-related life satisfaction", no differences were seen. CONCLUSION: These data indicate a discrepancy between subjective satisfaction with new gender identity and current life situation, and they identify problems with life satisfaction.

[Soft tissue defects as a complication in knee arthroplasty. Surgical strategies for soft tissue reconstruction].

Soft tissue defects after knee arthroplasty are a severe problem, which can even result in a loss of the prosthesis or the limb. Well-planned strategies are necessary for sufficient soft tissue reconstruction, resulting in optimal functional and aesthetic results. This report provides information on the classification of the tissue defects and the appropriate options for surgical reconstruction. Besides the basic therapy principles of immobilisation, débridement, planned lavages and antibiotic therapy, defect-dependent surgical techniques of reconstructive surgery are implemented. These include skin transplantation, local fasciocutaneous flaps, local pedicled muscle flaps and free flaps. For best results, interdisciplinary treatment by orthopaedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, microbiologists and physiotherapists is mandatory.

Is the frequency of self-monitoring of blood glucose related to long-term metabolic control? Multicenter analysis including 24,500 patients from 191 centers in Germany and Austria.

Blood glucose measurements are generally accepted components of a modern diabetes self-management. The value of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is, however, discussed controversially and only a few studies addressed the efficacy of SMBG under real-life conditions so far. In order to investigate whether the frequency of SMBG is related to long-term metabolic control, data from the DPV-Wiss-database, a standardized, prospective, computer-based documentation of diabetes care and outcome, were analyzed for patients with type 1(n = 19,491) and type 2 (n = 5,009) diabetes from 191 centers in Germany and Austria. Local HbA1c reference ranges were mathematically adjusted to the DCCT reference. For each patient, data from the most recent year of diabetes care were used. On average, patients with type 1 diabetes performed 4.4 blood glucose measurements/day. Corrected for age, gender, diabetes duration,on intensified (>or=4 daily injections or CSII) therapy (HbA1c reduction of 0.32% for one additional SMBG/day) compared to patients on conventional (1-3 daily injections) therapy(HbA1c-reduction of 0.16% for one additional SMBG/day). In 2,021 patients with insulin-treated type 2 diabetes (2.7 measurements/day), more frequent SMBG was associated with better metabolic control (HbA1c-reduction of 0.16% for one additionalSMBG/day, p < 0.0001), while in 2,988 patients on OAD or diet alone (2.0 measurements/day), more frequent blood glucose measurements were associated with higher HbA1c-levels(HbA1c-increase of 0.14% for one additional SMBG/day,p < 0.0001). These data indicate that more frequent SMBG are associated with better metabolic control in both, patients with type 1 and insulin-treated type 2 diabetes. Since no benefit ofSMBG on metabolic control was found in patients with type 2 diabetes on OAD or diet alone, SMBG should primarily be recommended for those patients with suboptimal metabolic control whereas the benefit of SHBG in non-insulin-treated patients with adequate HbA1c-levels remains uncertain.insulin therapy and center difference, the SMBG frequency was associated with better metabolic control (HbA1c-reduction of0.26% for one additional SMBG/day, p < 0.0001). Long-term survival results of a randomized trial comparing gemcitabine/cisplatin and methotrexate/vinblastine/doxorubicin/cisplatin in patients with locally advanced and metastatic bladder cancer.

PURPOSE: To compare long-term survival in patients with locally advanced and metastatic transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urothelium treated with gemcitabine plus cisplatin (GC) or methotrexate/vinblastine/doxorubicin/cisplatin (MVAC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Efficacy data from a large randomized phase III study of GC versus MVAC were updated. Time-to-event analyses were performed on the observed distributions of overall survival time and progression-free survival. RESULTS: Four hundred and five patients were randomized, 203 to the GC arm and 202 to the MVAC arm. At the time of this analysis, 347 patients have died (GC 176, MVAC 171). Overall survival was similar in both arms (HR 1.09; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.88-1.34, P = 0.66) with a median survival of 14.0 months (95% CI 12.3-15.5 months) in the GC, and 15.2 months (95% CI 13.2-17.3 months) in the MVAC arm. The median progression-free survival was 7.7 months with GC (95% CI 6.8-8.8) and 8.3 months with MVAC (95% CI 7.3-9.7) with a HR of 1.09 (95% CI 0.89-1.34). Significant prognostic factors favoring overall survival included performance status (>70), TNM staging (M0 vs. M1), low/normal alkaline phosphatase expression, number of sites of disease <3, and the absence of visceral metastasis. By adjusting for these prognostic factors, the HR was 0.99 for overall survival and 1.01 for progression-free survival. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term overall and progression-free survival following treatment with GC or MVAC are similar. These results strengthen the role of GC as a standard of care in patients with locally advanced and metastatic transitional-cell carcinoma (TCC).

Accuracy and precision of the three-dimensional assessment of the facial surface using a 3-D laser scanner.

Three-dimensional (3-D) recording of the surface of the human body or anatomical areas has gained importance in many medical specialties. Thus, it is important to determine scanner precision and accuracy in defined medical applications and to establish standards for the recording procedure. Here we evaluated the precision and accuracy of 3-D assessment of the facial area with the Minolta Vivid 910 3D Laser Scanner. We also investigated the influence of factors related to the recording procedure and the processing of scanner data on final results. These factors include lighting, alignment of scanner and object, the examiner, and the software used to convert measurements into virtual images. To assess scanner accuracy, we compared scanner data to those obtained by manual measurements on a dummy. Less than 7% of all results with the scanner method were outside a range of error of 2 mm when compared to corresponding reference measurements. Accuracy, thus, proved to be good enough to satisfy requirements for numerous clinical applications. Moreover, the experiments completed with the dummy yielded valuable information for optimizing recording parameters for best results. Thus, under defined conditions, precision and accuracy of surface models of the human face recorded with the Minolta Vivid 910 3D Scanner presumably can also be enhanced. Future studies will involve verification of our findings using test persons. The current findings indicate that the Minolta Vivid 910 3D Scanner might be used with benefit in medicine when recording the 3-D surface structures of the face.

[Influence of milking technique, milking hygiene and environmental hygiene parameters on the microbial contamination of milking machines].

It was the aim of this study to investigate the effect of various factors of the milking technique, milking hygiene and environment on microbial contamination of the milking machine. In 31 dairy herds, the degree of bacterial contamination was examined by taking swabs at four locations (teat cup liner, claw, short and long milk tube) before the milking procedure was started using a standardized protocol (DIN ISO 6887-1:1999). Furthermore, the total germ count was determined in the first milk entering the bulk tank as well as in the bulk tank milk following milking. For each farm, the quality of the milking process and the condition of the milking machine as well as of various environmental factors were recorded. A subjective evaluation of the status of the milking cluster or other parts of the milking machine ("good" or "moderate-poor") gave more information about bacterial contamination than the determination of age and type of material used. A temperature of the rinsing water of < 42 degrees C increased the contamination with Pseudomonas spp. and coliform bacteria. Milking clusters kept out of the cluster pick-up between milking had a higher risk of microbial contamination. Various methods of teat cleaning before milking or of postmilking teat disinfection did not affect the contamination of the milking machine and the bulk tank milk with environmental bacteria. Furthermore, type of bedding material affected bacterial contamination of milking clusters and bulk tank milk. In conclusion, our results suggest that the microbial contamination of the milking machine is not only influenced by the sanitation pro-

A prospective comparison of octyl-2-cyanoacrylate and suture in standardized facial wounds.

Regarding the cosmetic results of wound closure using tissue adhesives as opposed to sutured wounds, most published studies are performed on children and with non-standardized lacerations, which makes it difficult to transfer the results to facial incisional wounds in adults. There are also conflicting conclusions about the cosmetic results. The purpose of this randomized prospective study was to compare the cosmetic outcomes of wound closure with sutures and octyl-2-cyanoacrylate in standardized facial wounds in adults. To compare very similar facial wounds, the infraorbital cut (lower eyelid incision) was used in 45 patients. The assessment was performed by patients and surgeons blind to the data. Phase-shifting profilometry was used to measure the profile of the scars. No early complications were observed in any group. The wound depth in the tissue adhesive group was significantly greater than in the suture group. There were no differences in the overall cosmetic results among all patients in the two groups. Interestingly, in the younger patients the result of the sutured wounds was superior to that of the adhesive-treated patients. The Dermabond skin adhesive provides a means of closure of facial surgical wounds without early complications, but adjustment of the edges of the wound and the cosmetic result in younger patients are less successful than with thin sutures.

Tangential flow microfiltration and ultrafiltration for human influenza A virus concentration and purification.

Large scale purification of viruses and viral vectors for gene therapy applications and viral vaccines is a major separation challenge. Here tangential flow microfiltration and ultrafiltration using flat sheet membranes has been investigated for concentration of human influenza A virus. Ultrafiltration membranes with molecular weight cutoffs of 100 and 300 kDa as well as 0.1, 0.2 and 0.45 microm microfiltration membranes have been tested. The results indicate that use of 300 kDa membranes not only concentrate the virus particles but also lead to a significant removal of host cell proteins and DNA in the permeate. Tangential flow filtration may be used to fractionate virus particles. Human influenza A virus particles are spherical with an average size of 100 nm. Use of a 0.1 microm membrane leads to passage of virus particles less than 100 nm into the permeate and an increase of larger particles in the retentate. These results suggest that control of the transmembrane pressure, membrane pore size and pore size distribution could enable isolation of intact virus particles from damaged virions. Isolation of the virus particles of interest from viral fragments and other particulate matter could result in simplification of subsequent purification steps. Larger pore size membranes such as 0.45 microm that allow the passage of all virus particles may be used to remove host cell fragments. In addition virus particles attached to these fragments will be removed. Careful selection of membrane morphology and operating conditions will be essential in order to maximize the benefit of tangential flow filtration steps in the purification of viral products from cell cultures.

Persistent effects of cognitive-behavioral stress management on cortisol responses to acute stress in healthy subjects--a randomized controlled trial.

Psychosocial stress leads to a release of cortisol. While this psychoneuroendocrine response helps to maintain physiological as well as psychological equilibrium under stress, exaggerated secretion of cortisol has been shown to have negative effects on somatic health and cognitive functioning. The study set out to examine the long-term effects of cognitive-behavioral stress management training on cortisol stress responses in healthy men and women. Eighty-three healthy subjects were randomly assigned to cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM) training or a control condition. Four months after the CBSM, 76 subjects underwent a standardized psychosocial stress test. Salivary cortisol responses were assessed repeatedly before and after the stress test. Subjects in the CBSM group showed significantly reduced cortisol stress responses. With regard to gender, this effect was observed in both men and women. However, the magnitude of the CBSM effect on cortisol responses was smaller in women than in men. Use of oral contraceptives in women influenced the cortisol response, but did not have an impact on the CBSM effect on cortisol. The results show that the previously reported attenuation of cortisol stress responses through CBSM persists and are observable in both men and women. Since stress-induced alterations of hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis functioning are discussed to be involved in the onset and maintenance of both somatic and psychiatric conditions, similar interventions could be used for prevention and therapy of these detrimental stress effects.

A phase III trial of pemetrexed plus gemcitabine versus gemcitabine in patients with unresectable or metastatic pancreatic cancer.

BACKGROUND: This randomized phase III study compared the overall survival (OS) of pemetrexed plus gemcitabine (PG) versus standard gemcitabine (G) in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with unresectable locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer and no prior systemic therapy (including 5-fluorouracil as a radiosensitizer) were randomized to receive either 1,250 mg/m(2) gemcitabine on days 1 and 8 plus pemetrexed 500 mg/m(2) after gemcitabine on day 8 (PG arm) of each 21-day cycle, or gemcitabine 1,000 mg/m(2) on days 1, 8 and 15 of each 28-day cycle (G arm). RESULTS: Five hundred and sixty-five patients with well-balanced baseline characteristics were randomly assigned (283 PG, 282 G). OS was not improved on the PG arm (6.2 months) compared with the G arm (6.3 months) (P=0.8477). Progression-free survival (3.9 versus 3.3 months; P=0.1109) and time to treatment failure (3 versus 2.2 months; P=0.2680) results were similar. Tumor response rate (14.8% versus 7.1%; P=0.004) was significantly better on the PG arm. Grade 3 or 4 neutropenia (45.1% versus 12.8%), thrombocytopenia (17.9% versus 6.2%), anemia (13.9% versus 2.9%), febrile neutropenia (9.9% versus 0.4%; all P <0.001) and fatigue (15% versus 6.6%; P=0.002) were significantly more common on the PG arm. Four treatment-related deaths occurred on the PG arm and none in the G arm. CONCLUSIONS: Pemetrexed plus gemcitabine therapy did not improve OS. Single-agent gemcitabine remains the standard of care for advanced pancreatic cancer.

Early time course of neointima formation and vascular remodelling following percutaneous coronary intervention and vascular brachytherapy of in-stent restenotic lesions as assessed by intravascular ultrasound analysis.

In-stent restenosis (ISR) represents the major limitation of stent implantation. Treatment, although of relative technical ease, is unsatisfactory due to a high incidence of recurrent restenosis. Vascular brachytherapy (VBT) has emerged as a powerful adjunct therapeutic modality to treat ISR. Inhibition of neointima formation has been regarded as the relevant mechanism of action. Yet, positive remodelling has been suspected as another contributing factor. Since only very few precise analyses of the extent, distribution and time course of the respective mechanims exist, the goal of the present study was to describe the changes of the vessel geometry at the target lesion and at the reference site following angioplasty and VBT of ISR in 42 patients by means of quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) before and after the index procedure and at the 3 and 6 month follow-up. By QCA the acute lumen gain measured 2.2+/-0.8 mm, the late lumen loss at 3 months was 0.1+/-0.5 mm and at 6 months 0.4+/-0.7 mm. By IVUS luminal cross-sectional area increased from 1.5+/-1.2 mm(2) to 7.9+/-1.9 mm(2) (p<0.001). The intima hyperplasia cross-sectional area at 3 months was only 0.2+/-1.0 mm(2) (p=0.191), but increased to 0.7+/-0.6 mm(2) (p<0.001) at 6 months resulting in a lumen cross-sectional area of 7.1+/-1.7 mm(2). Stent dimensions did not show any significant changes over time. The external elastic membrane cross-sectional area at 3 months increased by 1.3+/-1.9 mm(2) (p<0.001), and showed a further increase by 0.7+/-2.9 mm(2) at 6 months. Positive remodelling could be demonstrated also at the reference segment. In conclusion the absolute amount of intima hyperplasia during a 6-month follow-up period after VBT of ISR is low and most pronounced between the third and sixth month. Besides this, predominantly within the first 3 months of follow-up, significant positive remodelling could be demonstrated at the target lesion and at the reference site. Both observed effects may contribute to the preservation of the vessel lumen.

[Objective assessment of cosmetic outcome of scars].

AIM OF THE STUDY: Cosmetic outcome of surgical treatment in the facial region is influenced by the appearance of the scar. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the objectivity and validity of various methods for the assessment of scars. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 45 patients undergoing facial surgery were examined three months after surgery. Three maxillofacial surgeons evaluated the wounds in a blinded manner using a visual analog scale (VAS). The patients also used the VAS for evaluation of their own scar. The surface of the scars was also measured by optical profilometry. Finally, the colour of the scars was analysed using both the RGB colour model and the HSV colour model. RESULTS: Interestingly, there was no significant correlation between the values of R (red) as assessed by the three surgeons. However, there was a very strong correlation between the values of H (hue) as assessed by the three raters. The appearance of the surface was more important in the patients' evaluation than in the raters' assessment. CONCLUSION: The hue of a scar as measured in terms of the H value in the HSV colour model is an objective and reliable measure for assessing the cosmetic outcome of facial surgery.

Computer aided surgical reconstruction after complex facial burn injuries -- opportunities and limitations.

In severe facial burn injuries with extensive destruction of anatomical structures, cosmetic and functional outcome of treatment are frequently not satisfactory. Although operative therapy is being continuously refined, the variety and proximity of structures in the facial region is considered a major challenge in reconstructive surgery. We present the case of a 16-year-old patient with a severe facial burn injury. In planning the reconstructive procedures, we used a multimodal approach employing data from computerized tomography imaging, as well as from surface laser scanning, which provided three-dimensional visualization of facial soft tissues. Amount and pattern of structural loss could thus be determined more precisely and studied more vividly than by inspection of two-dimensional imaging alone. Anatomical features to be reconstructed could be projected onto the skin area of the prelaminated vertical rectus abdominis muscle (VRAM) flap that has been chosen to cover the defect. Prior to surgery, correction of the defects was simulated and the results of the virtual procedure superimposed on a three-dimensional head model of the patient. Tissue elasticity and thickness of the flap, however, could not be ascertained in advance, indicating the limitations of the method.

Prenatal constriction of the fetal ductus arteriosus--related to maternal pain medication?

Physiological fetal circulation requires patency of the ductus arteriosus. As gestation proceeds, the sensitivity of the ductus to dilating prostaglandins diminishes. The sensitivity to constricting agents like PGE-synthetase inhibitors, present in many analgetics, however, increases. Fetuses affected by an antenatal constriction of the ductus arteriosus (DC) may present with different signs of cardiac failure including dilated right ventricle, tricuspid regurgitation and abnormal venous Doppler. We report on four cases with prenatal DC, presenting at 34, 35, 36 and 37 weeks of gestation. They were referred to fetal echocardiography because of abnormal routine echo scans with unexplained signs of right heart decompensation. Three patients were medicated during pregnancy with either aspirin (low dose), metamizole or ibuprofen. One patient did not take any drugs, especially no pain medication drug in pregnancy. Immediate delivery was performed in all cases. The neonates were in a good condition; echocardiography showed different degrees of right heart hypertrophy which disappeared in all infants by the age of 3 months except in case 2. Unexplained fetal right heart decompensation requires detailed echocardiographic evaluation of the ductus arteriosus and a sophisticated medical history with regard to analgesics. In contrast to ibuprofen and high-dose aspirin, metamizole and low-dose aspirin have not yet been reported as possible agents constricting the fetal arterial duct. In any suspected context, early delivery as in our cases may save babies life. Any application of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in pregnancy requires close fetal follow-up due to their potentially life-threatening effect.

[Quality of surgical continuing education in plastic surgery in Germany].

PURPOSE: Medical profession lost continuously attractiveness due to various reasons (insufficient training, irregular working time, decreasing income) in the last years. This does notably apply to surgical disciplines. In a survey should be clarified to what extent this dissatisfaction may be the case for residents and young specialists in plastic surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to all associated members of the "Vereinigung der Deutschen Plastischen Chirurgen (VDPC)" and was published in the communication journal of the VDPC. The questionnaire was sent back by 91 surgical residents or newly specialists (about 19 % of all). RESULTS: A well structured residency program existed for 47 %. 40 % of the residents were satisfied with the teaching assistance by their clinical teachers in the OR, whereas the fewest surgical procedures were done in the field of aesthetic surgery (n = 7). At least once per year it was possible for 80 % to take part in seminars or congresses. Therefore 45 % had to take holyday. For 44 % no financial support was paid. As perspective 30 % aim a career advancement in their hospitals and 18 % aim a private practice as plastic surgeon. CONCLUSION: To some extent training structures in plastic surgery are not well established. An urgent challenge should be to develop improvements in the continuing education in plastic surgery. This includes an increase in internal training, an organised rotation of residents between different hospitals, and structured mentoring of the residents.

Endothelin receptor antagonists are not beneficial in the therapy of acute experimental pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Due to increased capillary permeability and the early appearance of vasoactive and toxic agents, patients suffering from necrotizing pancreatitis frequently develop a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Endothelin, a potent vasoconstrictor, is thought to play a major role in these changes via the regulation of microcirculation. An improved outcome of acute experimental necrotizing pancreatitis by blocking the endothelin receptors ETA and ETB, either selectively (only ETA) or unselectively (ETA and ETB), has been suggested. The aim of this study was to investigate further the beneficial effects of new, highly potent endothelin-receptor (ET-R) antagonists in acute experimental pancreatitis. METHODS: The influence of the selective ET-RA antagonist BSF208075 (1 mg/kg) on mortality was studied in three severity groups of acute necrotizing pancreatitis (retrograde injection of 4%, 5% and 6% of sodium taurocholate into the main pancreatic duct). The effects of the selective ET-RA antagonists LU135252 (LU13) and BSF208075 (BSF20) and of the unselective endothelin receptor (ET-R(A/B)) antagonist BSF420627 (BSF42) were additionally analyzed in 4% taurocholate-induced necrotizing pancreatitis. Furthermore, the significance of variable doses of the endothelin receptor antagonist LU13 (1 mg/kg, 3 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg) was determined in a 4% sodium taurocholate model and in a cerulein pancreatitis model. RESULTS: Prophylactic ET-R antagonism increased the mortality rate in the 4% sodium taurocholate-induced pancreatitis. No reduction in pancreatic damage after induction of taurocholate pancreatitis was found by ET-R blockage. Application of ET-R antagonists had no beneficial influence in ascites development. However, administration of LU13 (100 mg/kg) resulted in a non-significant increase in pancreatic oedema, whereas peritoneal necrosis was not affected. CONCLUSION: The selective and unselective ET-R antagonists BSF20, BSF42 and LU13 failed to improve survival and pancreatic damage during acute experimental pancreatitis. Therefore, previously reported beneficial effects of ET-R antagonists in experimental acute pancreatitis have to be critically evaluated before conclusions for further clinical development are made.
