Intracerebral ciliated epithelial cyst.

The authors describe a case of hemispheric brain cyst of possible neuroectodermal origin, presenting as a frontotemporoparietal mass lesion. The etiologic aspects of intracranial neuroepithelial cysts are discussed.

Vitamin D-3 intestinal absorption in vivo: influence of fatty acids, bile salts, and perfusate pH on absorption.

Intestinal absorption of vitamin D-3 in physiological concentrations was studied in the live unanesthetised rat. In both the jejunum and the ileum a linear relationship was found between the absorption rate of the vitamin and its intraluminal concentration. Increasing the sodium taurocholate concentation in the perfusate above 5mM did not change ileal absorption rate but did decrease jejunal absorption rate. The vitamin's rate of absorption was raised by increases in either the hydrogen ion concentration in vivo is mediated by passive diffusion. The rate of absorption of ttion or the perfusate's flow rate. Addition of 2.5 mM fatty acids of varying chain length and degrees of saturation resulted in a decrease in the rate of vitamin D-3 absorption. These experiments indicate that vitamin D-3 absorption in vivo is mediated by passive diffusion. The rate of absorption of the vitamin is influenced by the composition of the perfusate and the thickness of the unstirred layer.

Radiotherapy combined with procarbazine, bleomycin, and CCNU in the treatment of high-grade supratentorial astrocytomas.

Twenty consecutive patients with supratentorial Grade III and IV astrocytomas were treated with postoperative radiotherapy, and a simultaneous induction chemotherapy with 1-(2-chloroethyl)-3-cyclohexyl-1-nitrosourea (CCNU), procarbazine, bleomycin, and maintenance chemotherapy with CCNU. They were compared to 32 retrospective control patients selected similarly, who had received postoperative radiation therapy alone. The median survival time was 56 weeks for the combined treatment group, and 51 weeks for the control group. There was no statistical difference in survival in the two groups of patients.

Studies on the paraplacental free fatty acid transport in rats.

Using the tracer method and a mathematical model the paraplacental transport of free fatty acids (FFA) (via uterine fluid--yolk sac--fetus) has been investigated in 21 days pregnant rats. The results show that only 0.3 nmoles FFA per min pass into the fetus via this paraplacental route. This accounts for less than 1% of FFA transported from the maternal plasma across the placenta into the fetus (0.14 mumoles FFA per min). From these results we would like to draw the conclusion that the paraplacental transport of FFA to the rat fetus is of minor importance from the quantitative point of view.
