Age and cerebral infarction: a postmortem study of 77 cases of cerebral infarcts in the middle cerebral artery territory.

Adverse effect of age on ischemic stroke short-term mortality was reported in some studies and attributed either to more frequent extracerebral causes of death or to an increased severity of ischemia in the aged brain. Relationship between age, size of infarcts, and causes of death were studied in 77 consecutive patients who died from infarction in the middle cerebral artery territory. Area of infarcts was assessed by planimetry, and results were expressed as an index of infarcted area. No significant relationship was found between age and the size of infarcts, the cause of death, or the interval from stroke to death. These results do not support the hypothesis of an increased severity of ischemia in the aged brain.

[Epidemiologic study of S. haematobium bilharziasis in the rice belt of Yagoua (North Cameroon). I. Prevalence of infestation and evaluation of the parasitic load].

The epidemiological study of urinary bilharziasis concerns family surveys done in four villages, three of them been located in the rice fields and the other one outside these fields: 990 urine examinations are performed by filtration as well as 966 immunological tests, using an hemagglutination technique and the heterologous antigen S. mansoni. The prevalence of bilharziasis varies from a village to the next, as well as the parasitic load, measured by means of number of eggs per 10 ml urine, in relation with the distance separating the village from the artificial water network built by the rice company. In Dabaye 62.4 % of the examined inhabitants are voiding eggs of S. haematobium, in Toukou 56.9 %, in Vele 31.6% and in Zebe 20.1%. In Toukou and Dabaye all teenagers examined were passing eggs in their urine.

[Epidemiologic study of S. haematobium bilharziasis in the rice fields of Yagoua (North Cameroon) II. Distribution and ecology of intermediate hosts].

While inventoring the local malacological fauna and evaluating the density of species acting as intermediate hosts of human schistosomes it has been shown that Bulinus truncatus is predominant in the study area. Bulinus globosus is scarcely encountered. Biomphalaria pfeifferi is only found in the Mayo Guerleo, in irrigation canals and draining ditches. But B. globosus and B. pfeifferi have not yet invaded the recent aquatic network and are not found in the lake nor in the newly created irrigation systems. Snails shedding cercariae of S. haematobium and S. mansoni have been collected in the area. Bulinus forskalii is found in all types of permanent of temporary waterbodies but S. intercalatum has not yet been reported from North-Cameroon. Lymnaea natalensis, the intermediate host of Fasciola gigantica, is found in the lake and in the canals, in the Mayo Guerleo and in the Toupasko pool. The rice field does not form by itself a favorable environment for snails to develop in it. Spots where transmission occurare more often in the area the secondary of tertiary irrigation canals and the brains. The ditches obstructed by plants are the places where the snails are developing best. Bulinus spp. are found in large numbers in the lowest parts of the aquatic network and they accumulate there to survive drought conditions in the mud. The recently built irrigation systems are not massively invaded by the snails yet and the prevalence of bilharziasis in the area correspond to the distribution of the intermediate hosts of schistosomes and to the density of the snails populations.
