One-hundred and thirty-eight 16-year-olds rated each of six stimulus figures: 'Fat young man', 'Fat young woman', 'Slim young man', 'Slim young woman', 'Me now', 'Me as I would like to be', on 28 seven-point personal rating scales. Principal component analyses derived one major and two minor components. Inspection of the major General evaluation component showed that the fat figures were negatively evaluated, and the slim figures positively evaluated. The students perceived themselves to be between these two extremes, but aspired more towards the slim figures. Differences between the perceptions of male female subjects and between those of Australian and European migrant parentage were also observed, particularly in relation to the minor components. The results indicate that stereotypes of obese and slim individuals are related to the sex, ethnicity and self-concepts of the perceiver.
The relationship of several Coronary Heart Disease risk factors to sex, social status and ethnic background was studied in a sample of 539 grade-5 students (10-year-olds) in eight volunteer primary schools in Adelaide. The risk factors examined were: obesity (sum of four skinfolds); blood pressure; fitness (physical work capacity (PWC) 170/kg); and plasma cholesterol, triglyceride, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Social status differences were negligible for all risk factors. However, differences between the sexes, and between ethnic groups, were marked, particularly in relation to fitness and obesity. Girls carried significantly more body fat than boys, although their height and weight were similar; they were less fit. Their plasma lipid levels and blood pressure, on the other hand, were very similar to those for boys. Values for children whose parents were born in Australia and the United Kingdom were similar for all risk factors. However, children of both sexes whose parents were born in Italy and Greece were fatter and less fit.U
Thirty-five young women completed the Profile of Mood States and tests of automatization and perceptual restructuring ability before and after commencing one of three forms or oral contraception (OC) or one form of intrauterine contraception (the loop). For each subject on each experimental variable the difference between the first and second tests was computed. These data were then analysed by covariance and discriminant function analyses. Two sets of functions were derived. The first distinguished the loop users from the OC users. The latter exhibited significantly greater increases in anger and significantly greater reductions in vigor than the former. The second set of discriminant functions distinguished users of Neogynon from the women in the other three groups. Neogynon users' performances on the Color Words Test (a measure of automatization ability) worsened and their anger, vigor and tension scores had decreased to a greater extent than was the case for members of the other groups. It is suggested that the changes in affect demonstrated by the first discriminant function were related to personal and attitudinal variables associated with the Loop users. The second discriminant function was interpreted as an indication that the varying progestagen content of OC may have differential effects upon both affect and automatization ability.

One hundred and twenty-seven out-patients attending a gynaecology clinic completed the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ, 60-item version) and a role problems checklist (RPCL). Principal factors analysis of the GHQ yielded 8 factors which were named: poor performance (which accounted for 63.3% of total variance), depression-anxiety, sleep-disturbance, anhedonia anergia, loss of confidence, general illness, social dysfunction and headache. These results were compared with previous principal components analyses of the GHQ (Goldberg, 1972; Goldberg et al. 1976). A multiple regression analysis indicated that age and 7 of the 8 factors were significantly related to the number of role problems reported by the patients. However, it appears that psychiatric distress (as measured by the GHQ) and role problems were only related to a small degree (multiple R2 = 12.69% only).
Twenty women using oral contraception for a minimum of 2 years with no side effects volunteered to take part in this experiment which commenced after they had undergone laparoscopic sterilization. In a double-blind cross-over design, patients were administered either 1.0 mg ethynodiol diacetate + 0.1 mg mestranol ("Ovulen") each day for 21 days or an identical-looking placebo for the same number of days. The following month the alternative (cross-over) tablet was given. On days 12 and 25 of each cycle the women completed a modified form of Pitt's Depression Index and a short Sexual Response Score. The result indicated that the active pill ("Ovulen") was associated with a decreased sexual response, but with no increase in the depression index (relative to placebo). The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to previous work, the methodology of the study and hormone-behaviour experiments.

A 49-year-old man presented with anemia, thrombocytopenia, and white cell count over 500,000 /microliters. Studies were diagnostic of hairy cell leukemia. Splenectomy was considered hazardous because of his general poor condition and the danger of leukostasis from the high white cell count. He was managed with leukapheresis with reduction in the white cell count from 556,000 /microliters to 20,000 /microliters followed by an uneventful splenectomy. Leukapheresis should be considered for patients with hairy cell leukemia and extremely elevated white cell counts.
