We studied cell-mediated cytotoxicity to hepatitis A virus-infected cells in seven patients with acute type A hepatitis and two controls. Skin fibroblast cultures obtained from the skin biopsies of seven patients after acute hepatitis A virus infection and from two persons without history of current or past hepatitis A virus infection were inoculated with hepatitis A virus. Infection of fibroblast cultures always resulted in an inapparent, persistent infection with production and release of infectious hepatitis A virus. Peripheral blood lymphocytes were collected from the same patients at different times after onset of icterus and were stored in liquid nitrogen. Cytolytic activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes was determined by a microcytotoxicity assay using autologous 51Cr-labeled hepatitis A virus-infected and uninfected target cells. Cytotoxic peripheral blood lymphocytes capable of lysing autologous hepatitis A virus-infected skin fibroblasts were detected in all patients with hepatitis A but were not demonstrable in the controls without antibodies against hepatitis A virus. The clinical course of the hepatitis A virus infection was normal in five patients; and in these patients, cytolytic activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes against hepatitis A virus-infected autologous targets peaked 2 to 3 weeks after onset of icterus. A clinically protracted form of the disease with persistent elevation of aminotransferases for at least 5 months after onset was present in two patients. In these cases, the highest cytolytic activity was demonstrated in peripheral blood lymphocytes collected 8 to 12 weeks after onset of icterus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
In order to clarify abnormal findings at abdominal ultrasound (suspicion of late abscess subsequent to appendectomy) in a young male patient with known familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), a helical CT examination of the abdomen was performed. At CT, extensive serositis of the lower abdomen was detected. Findings at CT were verified 2 weeks later at laparoscopy.
BACKGROUND: The ENU Mouse Mutagenesis Project aims at a large-scale, systematic production of mouse mutants using the alkylating agent ethyl-nitrosourea (ENU). Offspring of mutagenized mice are subjected to a multiparameter screen to detect alterations in various phenotypes with the ultimate goal of identifying novel genes relevant for the expression of the phenotype. Using this approach, we have analyzed plasma IgE concentrations to identify mouse mutants with aberrant plasma IgE levels. METHODS AND RESULTS: ENU-mutagenized male C3HeB/FeJ were mated to wild-type females to produce F1 offspring. F1 animals were analyzed for alterations in their plasma IgE concentrations that showed a dominant mode of inheritance, or bred further to screen for recessive phenotypes. Plasma IgE concentrations were determined by ELISA and a normal range for plasma IgE was established using C3HeB/FeJ wild-type animals. So far we have tested 6568 F1 animals. Repeated testing confirmed a stable aberrant IgE phenotype in 124 animals. To confirm the genetic basis of the observed phenotype, these mice were subjected to confirmation crossing. Currently we have established 9 independent mutant mouse lines (3 with high plasma IgE and 6 with plasma IgE below detection limit) that have been genetically confirmed and additional 24 variant mouse lines are currently undergoing confirmation testing. CONCLUSION: ENU mouse mutagenesis allowed us to generate and identify mouse mutants with aberrant plasma IgE levels, which may be used to characterize novel genes involved in IgE regulation and may serve as animal models for IgE-mediated diseases.

In the territory of 5 anti-TBC dispensaries in the area of Bucharest 2 circumscriptions have been selected at random in which radiophotographic detection was to be carried out integrally and 2 other circumscriptions were selected for the investigation of groups at high risk of developing tuberculosis. All the new cases of active pulmonary tuberculosis that have been recorded, through all the methods in these 20 circumscriptions in 1973 were analized retrospectively and the reasons appeared that had determined their existence was mentioned or was ommitted on the occasion of previous investigations. These reasons were correlated with the data concerning the method for detection that had been employed, according to the indications of the tuberculosis dispensaries. In view of the evaluation of the degree of real covering of the population in integral rf investigations, the team of the Institute of Phtysiology investigated representative lots of population from each dispensary and checked the catagraphy of the population in the field, house-by-house. It was noted that 20--21% of the subjects that had been programmed for the integral rf examination (according to catagraphic criteria) were absent when the checking in the field, that should have been programmed, were not included in the catagraphy. On the basis of this study the methodology for radiophotographic detection for groups with risk of developing tuberculosis was established.
The inter- and intraobserver variability of Doppler flow velocimetries of uterine, arcuate and umbilical arteries was studied using a 4 MHz continuous wave system in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. There was no significant variation in indices used to characterize the maximum frequency outline of waveforms of uteroplacental and umbilical arteries neither when two observers examined the same patient nor the examination was performed several times on the same day or over a 24 hour period by the same observer. In uteroplacental and umbilical arteries continuous wave measurements are highly accurate and are not inferior to the more expensive pulsed Duplex systems.
EEG changes were studied in the case of real movements (wrestlers training) and also in the case of imagination of motor activity (ideomotor training). Statistically significant increases were found of the average frequency of oscillations in the EEG alpha-range and simultaneously typical vegetative changes. Thus, imagination of motor activity may serve as a model for studying the CNS activation processes in connection with the realization of real motor activity.
The new Care Act will come into force on 1 January 1992. It will abolish guardianship by reason of mental disease, mental deficiency, prodigality, habitual drunkenness and drug addiction as well as guardianship of persons of full age and curatorship of infirm adults. Legal provisions relating to care will take the place of guardianship, and these provisions will no longer have any automatic effect on the affected person's capacity to enter into legal transactions, to marry, or to make a will. Where there is encroachment upon the rights of such persons, there must be strict observance of the principle of necessity. The new law will strengthen personal care. As far as possible, there must be compliance with the wishes of the person under care. As a rule, a natural person should be appointed as curator. The Act has special provisions on important matters relating to the care of persons, for instance on consent in respect of therapeutic treatment, on sterilisation, on committal and on the dissolution of households. The rights of affected persons will be substantially strengthened in standardised proceedings under noncontentious jurisdiction. Expert reports must always be obtained. The expert presenting a report will have to take due account of other aspects in addition to medical matters. Present cases of guardianship and of curatorship will automatically be converted into cases of care under the new law, and they will be reviewed in the light of the latter within certain time limits.
