Sera from normal C57BL/6 mice contained low titers of antibodies against proteins of MuLV. Sera from C57BL/6 mice that were immunized with allogeneic leukemia cells sometimes contained high-titered antibodies against the p15 protein of MuLV; these antibodies detected group-specific antigenic determinants of the p15 protein, since reactions were observed with the p15 proteins of both AKR and Moloney viruses. In contrast, antisera prepared in C57BL/6 mice against the AKR leukemia K36 reacted strongly with the p30 protein of MuLV, as well as with p15. Antibodies in the C57BL/6 anti-AKR K36 sera detected group-specific antigenic determinants of the p30 protein; reactions were observed with the C57BL/6 anti-AKR K36 serum and the p30 proteins of both AKR and Moloney viruses. It was concluded that mice do have the capacity to respond immunologically to antigenic determinants of the MuLV p30 protein, although in most circumstances this is not observed.

The distinction between 'medical' and 'surgical' jaundice is often difficult due to the lack of specificity of biochemical liver function tests, and the difficulty in assessing hepatocellular function and biliary tract patency in the jaundiced patient. We present a noninvasive isotopic technique which gives reliable information on these parameters, resulting in a high degree of accuracy in the classification of jaundice. 131I Rose Bengal, which is handled by the liver like bromsulphthalein, is administered intravenously and count rates during hepatic uptake and biliary excretion are recorded over the liver, biliary tract and duodenum using a gamma camera/computer system, into which is built an electronic light pen, so that particular areas of interest can be studied. Blood clearance of the iostope is simultaneously measured, and from these data the T 1/2 of uptake, the plasma retention and the excretion quotient are determined. The results of the first 80 examinations show that by qualitative assessment of the uptake and excretory phases of the 'hepatogram' and by determination of the T 1/2 and excretion quotient, jaundice has been classified with an 86 per cent accuracy in cases where the diagnosis is not apparent from clinical and biochemical data. The T 1/2 of uptake correlates well with bromsulphthalein retention in the non-jaundiced patient, and when applied to patients with obstructive jaundice enables the progress of hepatocellular impairment with time to be studied, and its recovery after relief of the obstruction. Preliminary results suggest that the technique may also have applications in the study of biliary tract dynamics in patients with post-cholecystectomy syndromes and relapsing acute pancreatitis.

A hyperproductive mucosal state in gluten-sensitive enteropathy has been proposed on the basis of an elevated mitotic index, but this parameter is dependent on the mitotic duration when used as an index of proliferative status. The mitotic duration was therefore measured in two control patients with normal villous mucosae and in two patients with the flat avillous mucosa of untreated gluten-sensitive enteropathy, using two different stathmokinetic techniques with vincristine. No significant difference in mitotic duration was found but values obtained for cell cycle time showed a halving in the flat mucosae. An increased rate of cell production in the small bowel mucosa of untreated gluten-sensitive enteropathy is thus confirmed.
A new method for the analysis of small-intestinal crypt-cell kinetics using routine peroral diagnostic biopsies is described. Untreated patients with childhood and adult coeliac disease and adults with the gluten-sensitive enteropathy of dermatitis herpetiformis were studied, together with groups of adult and childhood controls. In the classical flat avillous mucosae the increase in crypt size was found to be three-dimensional. The number of proliferating cells per crypt was shown to be markedly increased, and an even greater rise in the crypt-cell production rate was demonstrated. A significant increase in the mitotic index was also confirmed in the avillous mucosae. On the basis of these findings it is suggested that the characteristic crypt morphology in glutensensitive enteropathy can be explained as an adjustment to accommodate the expanded mass of proliferating and maturing cells necessary to support the augmented cell production rate. We may speculate that this in turn is a response to a pathologically rapid loss of cells from the mucosal surface.
