A study has been undertaken to determine the incidence of post-transfusion hepatitis in 57 patients with liver cirrhosis (non-B type) and 93 cases without liver disease, who received blood transfusion during major surgery. A significantly lower incidence of post-transfusion hepatitis (5.3%) was found in patients with liver cirrhosis than in those (17.2%) without liver disease. Two out of three cirrhotic patients with post-transfusion hepatitis progressed to the clinical state of hepatic failure.
The incidence and clinical characteristics of chronic hepatitis in the elderly patient over age 61 were studied in 680 biopsied cases from 1978 to 1984. Twenty four cases of chronic hepatitis in the elderly (4% of the total cases and 8% of all chronic hepatitis patients) were detected; the incidence is much lower than liver cirrhosis. Most of these cases (96%) showed active hepatitis. They had a long-term history of liver damage and negative HBsAg and HBeAg tests. Sixty seven percent of the patients showed block formation of the liver surface and low K(ICG) values (an average of 0.12). Twenty three cases are in good performance status 3 years and 3 months following the diagnosis, but ten cases still show marked fluctuation of serum GOT and GPT activities (greater than 60 IU). K(ICG) values in 16 cases improved from 0.12 to 0.14 on average 3 years after the diagnosis, suggesting that these cases might not progress to liver cirrhosis at least in the near future.
Plasma glucagon-like immunoreactivity (GLI) levels were increased in patients with liver cirrhosis. The levels were not significantly correlated with plasma glucagon immunoreactivity (GI) and serum insulin levels. None of the conventional liver function tests were correlated with the GLI levels, although plasma GI levels were high in cirrhotics with hyperammonemia. A significant correlation between plasma GLI and amino acid levels was not observed in these cases. The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) showed a significant decrease of plasma GI levels in cirrhotics but no change of plasma GLI concentrations: cirrhotic patients with diabetes mellitus or total gastrectomy showed marked increases of GLI levels. Glucagon (Glucagon Novo) injection at a dose of 10 micrograms/kg body weight to cirrhotic patients produced marked increases of both GI and GLI levels rapidly, though the mechanism of GLI elevation could not be clearly explained.

A clinical study on imipenem/cilastatin sodium (MK-0787/MK-0791) was carried out and the following results were obtained. MK-0787/MK-0791 was used for treatment of a total of 33 patients and clinical effectiveness, bacteriological efficacy and adverse reactions were evaluated. The clinical effects were excellent in 1 case, good in 21 cases and fair in 2 cases in a total of 24 cases with respiratory tract infections, were excellent in 5 cases and good in 1 case in a total of 6 cases with urinary tract infections, and were good in 2 cases and fair in 1 case in a total of 3 cases with gastroenteritis. Causative organisms isolated from 11 patients were 1 strain of Gram-positive cocci and 10 strains of Gram-negative bacilli. Ten out of 11 strains were eradicated for an eradication rate of 91%. The clinical efficacy was confirmed in 11 cases for an efficacy rate of 100%. The bacteriological study has shown that MK-0787/MK-0791 has a strong antimicrobial activity. No side effects were observed. There was only one abnormal laboratory finding, i.e., a case of eosinophilia.

A 56-year-old man with submucosal esophageal carcinoma combined with esophageal leiomyoma is presented. He had suffered from progressive dysphagia and vomiting. X-ray and endoscopic examination revealed severe stenosis of the lower esophagus with smooth mucosa, and CT scan demonstrated a circular and localized tumor. The histological diagnosis of esophageal leiomyoma was made by means of surgical biopsy. Resection of the lower esophagus and upper stomach was performed. But the postoperative pathological examination revealed submucosal esophageal squamous cell carcinoma combined with esophageal leiomyoma. The etiology and diagnosis in this case were discussed.

[14C]-Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) entered extensively into the liver and, to the small extent, into the brain 3 hr following the intragastric administration of the hepatotoxic dose. Although thiobarbituric acid (TBA) in the liver homogenates increased 12 hr after CCl4 administration, the brain showed little TBA values probably due to very low levels of chytochromes P-450 and b5 in the brain. These results suggest that CCl4 have no direct toxic effect upon the brain.
One or two injections two weeks apart of protein-conjugated penicillin G, cephalothin or cefmetazole emulsified with Freund's complete adjuvant were quite effective in producing anti-antibiotic antibodies of the IgE as well as of the IgG1 class in mice. Long-lasting and boostable production of both antibody classes was also obtained against unconjugated cephalothin or cefmetazole, though the positivity depended on the mouse strain.
A rise in blood and liver acetaldehyde concentrations following ethanol loading (1.5 g/kg b.wt) was significantly reduced when rats were pretreated orally with taurine (0.5 g/kg), a potent in vitro activator of yeast aldehyde dehydrogenase. This taurine pretreatment produced a 4-fold increase in liver taurine content.
