A multi-centre, randomized, single-blind, parallel-group clinical trial was undertaken in 50 patients (26 fenticonazole, 24 clotrimazole) with symptomatic vaginal candidiasis to compare the antifungal efficacy and tolerability of single-dose intra-vaginal treatment with a fenticonazole ovule (600 mg) or a clotrimazole vaginal tablet (500 mg). Assessment was by laboratory mycological investigation and symptomatic assessments for a period of 3 weeks from the day of treatment. Of the 50 patients, 43 (23 fenticonazole, 20 clotrimazole) returned for assessment 1 week after drug administration and 32 (17 fenticonazole, 15 clotrimazole) were re-assessed 3 weeks after drug administration. Both treatments resulted in very similar and highly significant improvements in symptoms, associated with disappearance of detectable Candida in approximately 70% of patients. There were no significant differences between treatments and no appreciable incidence of relapse during the 3-week period of observation. At the end of this period, 10 (59%) of 17 fenticonazole patients were totally disease-free, as compared with 10 (67%) of 15 patients after clotrimazole treatment. The cure rate observed was somewhat less than that previously seen when intra-vaginal cream formulations of the same two drugs were given on a multiple-dose basis. Both drugs were very well tolerated, with no reports of appreciable local or systemic adverse reactions to either drug.

Corticosteroids absorbed into the system, or, in particular, used locally, can lead to serious ocular complications often little understood by those who prescribe them. Among the three cases documented, the authors found one cortisone glaucoma, one cortisone cataract, and one associated glaucoma-cataract. General absorption occurred in one case, a nephrotic syndrome. The two other patients received corticosteroid ointment for chronic limbo-conjunctivitis, endemic in the tropics. Rigorous indication, respect for basic prescription laws, and regular supervision, particularly for long-term treatment, is necessary to prevent these iatrogenic accidents.
The authors report on the first case of Cortical Blindness in Senegal to be confirmed by sensorial electrophysiology (ERG and study of PEV). They stress the clinical aspects and the etiological factors dominated by infectious cerebral meningitis, particularly in sucklings.
The authors reported a case, a large orbital fibrous histiocytoma, in a 14 year old girl. They emphasize nosologic problems and histologic aspects of this benign tumor. Because of the localisation and the size of the tumor, a double anterior orbitotomy (superior and inferior) was necessary for complete renoval. Anatomic, functional and esthetic results were satisfactory.
The effects of body position and postoperative oxygen supplementation on arterial blood gas tensions (PaO2 and PaCO2) and pH were examined in clinically normal adult horses during recovery from halothane anesthesia. Hypoxemia developed during recovery from anesthesia in spite of adequate alveolar ventilation in horses without postanesthetic oxygen supplementation. Hypoxemia developed in horses positioned in left lateral or right lateral recumbency, and in horses that were rolled to the opposite side during the recovery period. Arterial blood gas tensions were not significantly (P greater than 0.05) different between horses insufflated with 100% oxygen at the rate of 10 L/min during recovery and horses that did not receive oxygen supplementation during the recovery period. Horses that received 100% oxygen at the rate of 50 L/min through a demand valve had arterial blood gas tensions similar to those in standing awake horses.
The authors reported 119 cases of trabeculectomy in Black African with open angle glaucoma. They observed excellent control of intraocular pressure in immediate, and long-term post-operative periods, with a few complications.
The authors report 43 cases with ocular signs among 60 cases of myasthenia gravis encountered over a period of 23 years in the Ophthalmologic and Neurologic clinics of the University Teaching Hospital of Dakar. After analysis of the aetiological, clinical, evolutional and therapeutic features, they insist on the importance of the ocular symptoms that eventually can help to early diagnosis and treatment.

Systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressures and heart rate were determined in 73 horses, using an indirect automatic oscillometric technique. Blood pressure and heart rate data obtained by sphygmomanometry were compared with similar data obtained from cannulation of the horses' facial or dorsal metatarsal arteries. Good correlation between direct (actual) and indirect (oscillometric) blood pressures and heart rate measurements were obtained when the heart rate was low, using high sensitivity setting. Cardiac arrhythmias or hypotension prevented oscillometric measurements from being obtained in 9 (12%) horses.

Recent reports have indicated that genetically obese hyperinsulinemic mice (ob/ob) and Zucker rats (fa/fa) compared with their lean controls have elevated levels of pituitary and plasma B-endorphins, opiates that can stimulate insulin secretion. In this study we have measured opiate levels by a radio-receptor assay in gastro-intestinal tissues and pancreas in ob/ob and fa/fa animals and their controls. Ob/ob mice showed significantly higher levels than control mice (+/+) in most gastro-intestinal tissues and pancreas. Levels in fa/fa rats did not differ from their controls. Radioimmunoassay of pancreas for B-endorphins, revealed higher levels in ob/ob vs +/+ mice, while there was no difference in the obese and lean rats. Fasting tended to decrease gastro-intestinal opioids in mice, while B-endorphin levels rose. It is concluded that opiates may play a significant role in the obesity of the ob/ob mouse and that this genetic obesity differs from that in Zucker rats.
