[Cermet cements for milk tooth fillings. Preliminary results].

106 Ketac-Silver fillings in deciduous molars were reevaluated after 1 to 3.3 years, i.e. 25 month on the average. About 90% of 50 occlusal fillings and about 84% of 56 multisurface restorations were unchanged. Without claiming statistical evidence for their conclusiveness, we consider these results as an indication that cermet cements are a useful alternative to amalgam fillings in deciduous teeth, particularly since the life of these fillings is limited to the time until the milk tooth is physiologically lost.

[Comparative studies on fissure sealing: composite versus Cermet cement].

Fifty two molars sealed with either composite or Cermet cement were compared. The composite sealant was applied after enamel etching using a rubber dam. Before sealing with Cermet cement the enamel was only cleaned with pumice powder and sodium hypochlorie and the material was applied without enamel etching. After an average follow-up of 1.6 years composite sealants proved to be significantly more reliable. Cermet cement sealings showed defects more frequently.

[Improved measuring instruments for endodontic radiography].

Fine steel instruments used for the radiographic length measurement of root canals are not always imaged clearly enough on the x-ray film, due to lacking absorption of radiation. Although silver points have a higher radiopacity, they lend themselves less to practical use, since they are too soft, tend to bend easily and fail to convey any sense of touch. Improved measuring instruments made from a hard gold alloy combine the elastic properties of steel and the radiopacity of silver and can be recommended for routine application in length measurement radiographs.

[Questionable method for determining root canal lengths].

Apart from radiographic methods, the use of electronic devices for determining root canal lengths is widespread. Based on physical considerations and simple in vitro tests the basic principles of endometry are discussed. Since the electrochemical processes at the electrodes are incalculable, the measured result is fortuitous. As an alternative to the radiographic determination of root canal lengths endometry must be rejected.

[Clinical comparison of adhesive systems for bonded bridges].

54 three-unit maxillary anterior bridges with retention meshes were bonded under standardized and, as far as possible, identical clinical conditions using different adhesive systems: Super Bond, a 4-Meta-PMMA resin, and ABC (Adhesive Bridge Cement) and Microfill pontic, both composite adhesives. The restorations were re-evaluated after 5.3 years, at most. Both types of adhesive systems could be tested by contralateral comparison of 10 pairs of bonded bridges. After a mean period of 2.9 years of wear primary failures were observed in 8 out of 54 bonded bridges (approximately 15%). Under the conditions given in this study the failure rates of the composite adhesives and the 4-Meta-PMMA resin were identical after approximately 3 years.

[Prospective, comparative study of a infrared spectroscopic blood culture system (Bactec NR-660)].

The automatic Bactec NR-660 system was compared with a conventional blood culture system - Septi-Check, La Roche (RSC). Out of a total of 962 blood cultures 157 isolates were detected: 123 in RSC and 104 in Bactec 6A. If only clinical relevant strains were considered the isolation rate was nearly equal in both systems, being 75% in RSC and 77% in Bactec 6A, respectively. The RSC-system was more frequently contaminated (3.3% vs 1.0%). Positive blood cultures were detected 12 hrs earlier by the Bactec system.

[Peri-operative preventive use of antibiotics in abdominal hysterectomy].

In patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy, the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis was compared to no treatment. Additional studies on the influence of risk factors such as D&C, conisation and IUD's on post-operative morbidity were evaluated. 144 patients were recruited into the study and prospectively randomised into one of four groups. Groups IV and II received 2 g i.v. Cefotetan and were comprised of patients with or without risk factors, respectively. Similarly, groups III and I, again with or without risk factors, received no treatment and served as the control groups. Infectious post-operative morbidity was significantly reduced in both groups of patients receiving antibiotic prophylaxis, the maximum benefit being observed in those patients with accompanying risk factors. The need for additional antibiotic therapy was highest in those patients receiving no antibiotic prophylaxis, i.e. groups III and I. Additionally if concomitant risk factors were present, the duration of hospitalisation was increased by a further 1.4 days.

Dependence of ATP citrate lyase activity on cell density of isolated rat hepatocytes.

The activities of two enzymes involved in the lipogenic process, ATP citrate lyase and NADP-linked malic enzyme were evaluated as a function of cell density in isolated rat hepatocytes. The activity of ATP citrate lyase was profoundly affected by cell density with the activity/cell being higher at low cell densities than at high cell densities. Malic enzyme was not similarly affected, nor was cellular ATP content. The effect was observed regardless of dietary state but was most dramatic with hepatocytes from fasted-refed rats. Both an activator and an inhibitor of ATP citrate lyase have been isolated from conditioned medium from cells at low density and at high density, respectively. The activator fraction was heat stable while the inhibitor fraction was heat labile, and both factors had molecular weights in excess of 10,000 daltons.
