[The growth of thermophilic fungi strains Aspergillus fumigatus and Mucor lusitanicus in n-alkane medium (author's transl)].

Growth parameters of the thermophilic hydrocarbon utilizing strains Aspergillus fumigatus and Mucor lusitanicus in n-alkanes (KW)- and glucose (GIc)-medium in standing and fermenter cultures were investigated. The temperature limits for growth were dependent on the medium composition. The temperature range for sporulation was smaller than for the hyphal growth. Both strains were cultivated on carbon limitation with subsequent determinations of n-alkanes glucose, ammoniumsulfate-nitrogen, phosphate-phosphorus and the trace elements Mn, Cu, Zn and Fe. A method for estimation of hydrocarbon utilization was developed. In a medium containing a mixture of n-alkanes and glucose as C-sources the strains utilized at first glucose. Both the strains excreted monocarbon acids with a low carbon number into the culture liquid. The results were discussed.

[Enzymatic studies of the thermophilic hydrocarbon utilizing fungi strains Aspergillus fumigatus and Mucor lusitanicus (author's transl)].

The activities of catalase, peroxydase, and of the chitinolytic enzymes of the thermophilic hydrocarbon-utilizing fungal strains of Aspergillus fumigatus and Mucor lusitanicus, grown in n-alkane (KW) or glucose (Glc) medium at different temperatures with additions of KCN, NaNO3, 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATA), and CaCl2 and with a shift culture from Glc to KW medium were determined. The enzymatic activities, able to cleave H2O2, were cytochemically shown in the hyphae with 3,3-diamino-benzidine-tetrahydrochloride (DAB) reagent. The colouring of the mycelium was most intense during the linear growth phase in the KW medium. The DAB oxydation could completely by suppressed by pre-incubation of the mycelium with the enzyme inhibitors KCN or ATA and incubation in the standard medium without H2O2. The catalase and peroxydase activities were higher in the KW medium than in the Glc medium, where highest activities occurred at the start of the linear and the stationary growth phase. The pre-incubation of the enzyme solution with the inhibitors KCN, NaNO2 or ATA gave maximum inhibition with ATA, likewise gave the addition of ATA to the medium the highest inhibition of the enzymatic activities, connected with an extension of the initial growth phase. Addition of CaCl2 increased the catalase and peroxydase activities, where catalase at 40 degrees C and peroxydase at 50 degrees C showed maximum growth. A shift of the growing mycelium from Glc to KW medium confirmed the correlation of KW utilization and high catalase activity. The highest chitinolytic activities were ascertained at the beginning of the linear growth phase at a temperature of 40 degrees C. The results were discussed.

[Interferons and their importance for prevention and therapy in man and animals].

In form of a survey of the actual international literature, taking into consideration own investigations, the present stage of knowledge concerning properties of interferones, inductors, course of synthesis and therapeutic mechanism is described. The effect of the interferones is in a manifold way connected with the effect of other factors of the infection defence, with complement, properdin, activity of phagocytosis and formation of antibodies. Though the application of interferone is still connected with great difficulties, encouraging results were yielded already in respiratory diseases and in tumour diseases, too. These results justify the performance of further experiments.

[Physiological studies on thermophilic hydrocarbon-utilizing hyphae fungi (author's transl)].

Out of different substrates, thermophilic n-alkane-assimilating hyphae fungi were isolated and the strains of Aspergillus fumigatus and Mucor lusitanicus selected for physiological investigations. The growth curves, obtained in hydrocarbon and glucose at different temperatures, showed three phases: 1) initial growth phase, 2) linear growth phase, and 3) lysis phase. Maximum dry matter and maximum protein content occurred within a range of 35-40 degrees C. During the entire time of growth the DNA content per mg dry matter was almost the same, i.e., 0.1-0.2 per cent. The ascertained specific protease activity of Aspergillus fumigatus correlated with protein synthesis and protein decomposition of the biomass. The results of our investigations are being discussed.

[Contribution to the continuous indirect blood pressure measurement].

The plethysmanometer described follows the principle of the relaxed wall of the vessel. Here the pressure is adjusted in a finger cuff and by means of a pneumatic regulation is varied in such a way that the light plethysmogram of the adequate finger does not show any more pulsations. Thus the pressure effected on the finger above the cuff corresponds to the pressure in the finger arteries and is to be registered in mm Hg. When the course is measured in the same test person with changing of the arterial pressure (e.g. absolute arrhythmia or compressed-air pressure experiment) the blood pressure of the aorta measured when a heart catheter is diagnostically indicated shows a very close correlation to the unbloodily registered pressure of the finger arteries. On the other hand, greater varieties of the correlation coefficient which can be proved from test person to test person at present do not yet allow a formula obligatory in general, in order to tansfer the value unbloodily measured into the adequate bloody one. Nevertheless, already nowadays great ranges of application are possible for the progressing measuring of the blood pressure.
