This study was aimed at assessing whether c-DDP administration immediately before radiotherapy could increase frequency and duration of objective responses, as well as survival, in patients affected with locally advanced stages of squamous carcinomas of the head and neck. All patients had already undergone two induction cycles according to the CABO schedule. Ninety-six of 108 treated patients could be evaluated. Treatment schedule consisted in: 1) randomized distribution of patients into two groups before induction chemotherapy; 2) two cycles of induction chemotherapy according to the CABO schedule in all patients; 3) radiation therapy: the patients in group A were given 5 mg/mq of i.v. cisplatin, 30-60 minutes before each session. The results from the two groups were compared and no significant differences were observed regarding objective response (82.5% in group A vs. 86% in group B), response duration and overall survival rates. Even though toxicity was higher in the patients in group A, therapeutic protocol never needed be modified.

The experimental behavior of a 1-mm internal diameter (i.d.) polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microprosthesis, as a substitute for an abdominal aortic segment in the rat, was reviewed. Fifty Wistar rats were divided into four groups: Group I--12 rats with autotransplant of an abdominal aortic segment (AAS); Group II--12 rats with allotransplant of an AAS obtained from Long-Evans rats; Group III--12 rats with xenotransplant of an AAS taken from rabbit femoral arteries; and Group IV--14 rats with substitution of an AAS by a 1-mm i.d. PTFE microprosthesis. The rats were sacrificed at different time intervals ranging from five to 360 days, with previous aortography. In Group I, there was a 100 percent patency at a mean of 152.41 days; in Group II, a 91.6 percent patency at a mean of 100.08 days; in Group III, an 83.3 percent patency with a 75 percent aneurysmal dilation at a mean of 107.58 days; in Group IV, a 71.42 percent patency with two anastomotic aneurysms at a mean of 105 days (P less than 0.05, chi square) between Groups I and IV, autotransplant vs. PTFE). The 1-mm PTFE microprosthesis placed in the arterial system of the rat proved to be a reliable alternative for microvascular substitution.
One hundred and thirty-eight femoral lengthening operations have been performed in 133 children. The etiology of the shortening was poliomyelitis in 71, infection in 20 and congenital abnormalities in 28. The femur was lengthened in one operative stage by step-cut osteotomy, immediate traction and plate fixation. The mean gain was 35 mm with a maximum of 55 mm. The range of knee movement was unaffected except in 6 cases. Infection occurred in 2 patients without prejudicing the final result. Bony union was obtained in all cases, bone grafting being necessary only once. One permanent sciatic palsy was seen. Thirteen fractures occurred in 9 femurs. Two occurred during operation with loss of lengthening in one case. Eleven occurred post-operatively at the site of osteotomy. One case fractured on 3 occasions. Two cases fractured in another portion of the femur. The complications became fewer with experience and with more accurate technique and it is concluded that the method is safer than progressive lengthening at least in moderate limb length discrepancy.

A tumor diagnosed as an oncocytoma was removed from the lower right lung of a 22-year-old patient. Specimens from the formalin fixed tumor were studied by light microscopy and by electron microscopy. Large numbers of mitochondria were observed in all the tumor cells at the ultrastructural level despite many artefacts due to fixation. The presence of two tumor cell types "typical" oncocytes and "condensed" oncocytes were demonstrated by electron microscopy. This appears to be the second pulmonary oncocytoma in which mitochondrial hyperplaxia has been demonstrated. The tumor was similar to previously reported cases of salivary gland oncocytomas.
Three hundred and eighty-six children aged 12-59 months, suffering from protein-calorie malnutrition were studied. Middle arm circumference and triceps skin-fold measurements were taken and from these values, middle arm muscular circumference was calclated. Simultaneously, the serum amino-acid balance was determined. The same measurements were carried out in 132 healthy control children of the same age group. These showed that middle arm muscular circumference does not change within the age groups studied, and with its value the amino-acid balance showed an inverse correlation. It is concluded that the severity of protein imbalance in malnutrition can be estimated on the basis of both middle arm muscular circumference and amino-acid balance. In view of its simple technique the former parameter is given preference.
