This article introduces shade selection as an act of communication rather than a quasi-science that has failed for generations. The use of three simple items: the Pensler Shield, the Kodak Color Viewing Light Selector Card (P3-180), and a patient-oriented prescription form solve the major problems in shade selection. Shade selection must be taught with an understanding of the psychology of vision and a communication of what you think you see.
A new type of material is being introduced to American dentistry. The material is a polymer glass, tested in Europe as Artglass. The material is purported to be equal to or better than porcelain for esthetic dentistry. The strength, color translucency, and color vitality allow minimal destruction of enamel for esthetics. An Artglass occlusal is less abrasive to enamel than porcelain and approximates gold. The characteristics of this material system introduces "minimal invasive dentistry" to routine dental repair and reconstruction. A case study of the senior author's reconstruction of his anterior teeth is presented.

My standard admonition still pertains: scale all surfaces, supragingival and subgingival, after any type of cementation. You will be embarrassed by the amount of residual cement left after removal with an explorer.

There is some controversy about whether or not tooth preparation is needed before placing porcelain laminate veneers. Without adequate preparation, the added surface contour may increase the risk of periodontal disease. When properly executed, veneers for cosmetic dentistry should be reversible. Many teeth that could have been saved with the use of a conservative laminate veneer are destroyed by full crown reduction. The case presented in this article illustrates the preparation of six maxillary anteriors with with pronounced spaces between them for laminate veneer placement.
