A therapeutic and discontinuation study of clobazam and diazepam in anxiety neurosis.

The efficacy and safety of clobazam and diazepam were compared in 40 patients with generalized anxiety disorder in a 28 day non-placebo-controlled trial followed by a 3-day single-blind placebo washout. The two drugs were equally anxiolytic, and the anxiety symptoms of most patients were brought under control within 1 week. Both drugs were found to be nontoxic. Diazepam had slightly greater sedative properties than clobazam, which was the patients' preferred drug after 28 days of treatment. During placebo washout, anxiety returned to pretreatment levels. Abrupt withdrawal did not result in rebound phenomena.

Interactions between dietary obesity and exercise-training on carbohydrate metabolism.

The present study addressed the important question of whether exercise-training could reduce insulin levels in exercise-trained rats made obese by a diet composed of palatable foods. Female rats were divided in exercise-trained or in sedentary groups which receive either a palatable high-energy diet or merely a standard laboratory chow. The high-energy diet was composed of supermarket foods including chocolate chips cookies, pop-corn, bologna, etc. Exercise-training program consisted of forced swimming, 6 d per week, 2 h per d, in water maintained at 36 degrees C. At the end of both fattening and exercise-training program, the animals were subjected to an intravenous glucose tolerance test. The results showed that high-energy diet and exercise-training had opposite effects on both glucose tolerance and insulin secretion: the former impaired glucose tolerance and increased insulin levels, whereas the latter leads to opposite adaptations. In addition, some abnormalities in insulin metabolism persisted in rats simultaneously assigned to exercise-training and high-energy diet. Thus, the present results also suggested that physical training alone could not reduce plasma insulin under control levels, and that a change in energy balance is possibly necessary to achieve this purpose.

Determination of the optimal concentration of lithium for the prophylaxis of manic-depressive disorder.

A group of 29 bipolar manic-depressives completed a 12-month double-blind cross-over trial of low-dose and high-dose lithium prophylaxis. Twelve patients relapsed, and significantly more of the relapses occurred during the low-dose 6-month phase of the trial. There was a trend for relapse to occur within 2 months of an abrupt drop in plasma lithium level, and to occur more often in women than in men. The efficacy of low-dose lithium prophylaxis and the significance of rebound relapse are discussed.

Studies on the sparing effect of exercise on insulin requirements in human subjects.

The reduced insulin response of trained subjects in the presence of normal glucose tolerance has been confirmed. It was also found that this beneficial effect of exercise is greatly reduced if trained subjects are inactive for 3 days while eating ad libidum. During that period excessive food intake (3291 cal/day) was noted. However, when the subjects were on a restricted diet (2076 cal/day) the reduced insulin response to a glucose load was retained. The ratio of food intake with regard to caloric utilization is possibly the important modulator of the action of exercise on insulin requirements. The effect of exercise on insulin secretion was also found to be acquired rapidly since it was observed 18 hr after 1 hr of physical activity at 70% of V02 max in non-trained subjects. For all these studies a correlation (p less than 0.01) was found between the secretion of insulin in response to glucose challenge and both basal plasma glucose and insulin.

Interaction of deaf and hearing preschool children.

Hearing and hearing-imparied children attending an integrated preschool were observed in a free-play situation. The principal objective was to discern how hearing and deaf children interacted and modified their communication skills as a function of hearing status. The data indicate that hearing children interact more frequently with other hearing children on several behavioral categories (approaches, vocalizations, social play, and physical contact). Although there was a tendency for deaf children to approach other deaf children more frequently than they approached hearing children, they showed no preferences for other interactions as a function of peers' hearing status. These findings are consistent with those of research on other exceptional children, such as the mentally retarded, in showing that, while hearing-impaired children showed no peer preference, they were least preferred by normal peers.

Thermostable antigens from the bone marrow of several animal species.

Studies on bone marrow extracts from ten animal species have revealed the presence of thermostable antigens. Similar antigens were found in other organs as shown by immunodiffusion and cross-reactivity was demonstrated between the thermostable proteins from horse and dog and between cow and sheep proteins. Using an immunoenzymatic reaction with glucose oxidase as the marker, the thermostable antigens were localized in the blood and bone marrow polymorphonuclear leukocytes and the myeloid cell line.

[An experimental study on the variation of serum antibody levels relative to the life cycle of the horsefly].

The changes of antibody titers in the sera of colts infested naturally or artificially with Gasterophilus have been determined in relation to the life cycle of this arthropod using passive hemagglutination, complement fixation, double diffusion techniques and saline extracts of antigens from the third larval stages of Gasterophilus intestinalis and G. nasalis. In the sera of the infected animals the hemagglutinating antibodies were present at low titers at the third week post-infestation by using somatic extract of G. intestinalis and at the seventh week in case of G. nasalis. At eight weeks post-infestation the antibody titers reached their maximum 1:8192 (G. intestinalis) and 1:4096 (G. nasalis), then dropped at 12 weeks post-infestation. The complement fixing antibodies were present occasionally between the seventh and 11th weeks after infestation. Precipitating antibodies were absent in all sera.

A preliminary study on the intestinal flora of cecum and colon of eight, ten and 12 week old swine.

Using a replica-plating method and differential culture media, members of the Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonaceae were determined quantitatively in the colon and cecum content of pigs from different litters, born on the same farm and kept under the same environmental conditions, from the age of six weeks. The bacterial flora in pigs of eight, ten and 12 weeks of age showed little significant quantitative variation. Pigs of 12 weeks of age differed significantly from younger ones with respect to Aeromonas, Edwardsiella, staphylococci and molds. The existence of a variable flora is underlined as well as the fact that Vibrio coli represents an important member of the intestinal flora at that age. No significant variation in the pH of the chyme of the colon and cecum was recorded.

Concentration of IgG in serum and large intestine of dysenteric swine.

Radial immunodiffusion tests employing swine IgG monospecific antiserum have permitted the determination of the IgG concentration in the serum and large intestine of healthy and dysenteric 12 week old boars. Specific and significant increases in IgG were observed in serum and colon during the acute from of the disease, but in the cecum only, during the subacute phase of the disease.

[Total proteins and their fractions in the serum and endometrial secretions in cows affected by infertility since materia].

Total proteins, albumine and globulins of serum and uterine secretions were evaluated in two groups of 15 normal and 15 repeat breeder cows. Cyclic significant variations of all studied parameters were observed in uterine secretions of normal cows although only total proteins showed the same pattern in repeat breeder cows where individual variations were noted to be very important. Concentrations of total proteins, albumin (P<0.05) and beta globulins (P<0.01) were different between the two groups during either the estrous or the postestrous period. Concentration of proteins in uterine fluid was higher in normal breeder cows during postestrus and diestrus.
