The effect of prostaglandins F2 alpha and E2 on the adrenergic activity of the uterus of laying hens (Gallus domesticus) in vitro.

The effect of PGF2 alpha and PGE2 before or after administration of isoproterenol or norepinephrine was studied on uterine strips of White Leghorn laying hens. Prostaglandins (0.2 ng/ml of bath solution) always produced an increase in tension and area under the tracing, the effect of PGF2 alpha being significantly marked especially when administered after norepinephrine. Norepinephrine and isoproterenol (0.1 microgram/ml of bath solution) produced a marked decrease in area under the tracing, the effect of isoproterenol being more potent especially when administered before prostaglandins.

Differential expression of HLA-DR and HLA-DQ antigens on normal cells of the myelomonocytic lineage.

We have previously shown that HLA-class II antigens have a differential expression on acute myeloblastic leukaemia (AML) blasts. These cells express HLA-DR molecules but the HLA-DQ antigens are undetectable. In this paper we study the expression of HLA-DR and HLA-DQ antigens, using monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs), on normal cells of the myelomonocytic lineage: the common myelomonocytic progenitor (CFU-GM) and the monocytes, by techniques of inhibition of CFU-GM growth and double immunofluoroscence, respectively. The results show that HLA-DR and HLA-DQ antigens are differentially expressed on normal myelomonocytic cells. While HLA-DR molecules are expressed on CFU-GM and on the majority of peripheral blood monocytes, HLA-DQ antigens are not expressed on CFU-GM and only present on a subpopulation of monocytes. This data further confirms that HLA-DR and HLA-DQ molecules are coded by different genes with independent regulation of the gene expression not only on myeloid leukaemias but also on normal cells of the myelomonocytic lineage.

Subconjunctival haemorrhage: a feature of acute severe asthma.

Bilateral subconjunctival haemorrhage was observed on 5 separate occasions in 4 patients presenting a fulminant form of acute severe asthma. Four of these episodes required ventilatory support. All patients recovered from their asthma attack after treatment with bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and oxygen. The incidence of this previously unreported finding represents 5% of the total number of patients with acute severe asthma mechanically ventilated in our intensive care unit from 1976.

Ultraviolet-laser ablation of skin.

We report on the use of pulsed ultraviolet-laser irradiation at 193 nm from an argon-fluoride laser and at 248 nm from a krypton-fluoride laser to ablate skin. In vitro, both wavelengths performed comparably, removing tissue precisely and cleanly, and leaving minimal thermal damage to the surrounding tissue. In vivo, the 193-nm laser radiation failed to remove tissue after bleeding began. The 248-nm radiation, however, continued to remove tissue despite bleeding and left a clean incision with only minimal thermal damage. The krypton-fluoride excimer laser beam at 248 nm, which should be deliverable through a quartz optical fiber, has great potential as a surgical instrument.

Alterations in CFU-GM growth in preleukaemic and leukaemic AKR/J mice.

The behaviour of committed CFU-GM bone marrow cells was investigated in leukaemic and preleukaemic AKR/J mice. The number of bone marrow CFU-GM decreased in the leukaemic stage of spontaneous AKR/J leukaemia. The addition of AKR/J leukaemic cells inhibited CFU-GM growth from normal target bone marrow. The bone marrow CFU-GM growth was also reduced in late preleukaemic AKR/J mice, whereas no modification in the CFU-GM number in early preleukaemic animals was found.

Changes in plasma levels of protease and fibrinolytic inhibitors induced by treatment in acute myeloid leukemia.

We have studied the main protease inhibitors of leukocytes, alpha-1-protease (alpha 1-PI), alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (alpha 1-Achy) and alpha-2-macroglobulin (alpha 2-M), as well as different parameters of coagulation and fibrinolysis in 21 cases of acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia (ANLL) before, during and after therapy. Nine of the patients presented signs of DIC, 8 of whom belonged to subtype M3 and to subtype 1 M1. The initial alpha 1-PI and alpha 1-Achy levels, which were elevated, increased during the treatment period. There was no significant difference between patients with and without DIC. However, those leukemic patients with DIC showed a significant decrease in plasminogen (p less than 0.005) and fast antiplasmin (p less than 0.01) only during the treatment compared with DIC free patients. All DIC cases demonstrated circulating plasmin-antiplasmin complex (P-AP) both before and during treatment. Independent of a possible proteolytic action of leukocyte enzymes on clotting factors in the clinical course of ANLL (mainly M3 subtype), our results suggest an activation of plasmin-mediated fibrinolysis related to the activation of plasminogen by leukocytes, reactive DIC or both.

Aldosterone-stimulated feeding and weight gain: interactions with estrogen?

The effects of combined adrenalectomy-ovariectomy and steroid replacement on food intake, spillage, body weight, skeletal growth, and fluid retention were investigated in rats that were fed freely or held to a controlled allotment. The stimulation of feeding and weight gain by aldosterone was not dependent upon the presence of estradiol. Likewise, the suppression of food intake and weight gain brought about by estradiol was not influenced by aldosterone, leading us to conclude that the effects of the two hormones are independent and additive, not interactive. Estradiol and aldosterone each significantly altered the rate of food spillage and in opposite directions. There was a marked reduction in the extent to which estradiol influenced body weight in the controlled feeding situation. Accompanying this was a differential effect of estradiol on body growth. Depending upon feeding condition, estradiol either retarded (free-feeding) or accelerated (restricted) skeletal growth. Aldosterone's stimulation of weight gain was nearly proportional across feeding conditions, and it did not influence body growth.

Hyperplasia of sebaceous glands in a linear pattern of papules. Report of four cases.

Four cases of a clinically discernible hyperplasia of sebaceous glands in a linear pattern of papules were seen and studied at the Dominican Dermatological Institute in the past 3 years. The condition was found in three men and one woman and was characterized by a linear arrangement of papular lesions situated on the pre- and retroauricular regions, neck, and chin. The histologic features were stereotypic in all cases and consisted of hyperplasia of sebaceous glands.

Hypophosphatemia as a cause of failed weaning: the importance of metabolic factors.

Hypophosphatemia has been only occasionally implicated as the cause of respiratory failure. This report illustrates its pathogenetic importance in the maintenance of such condition, as well as the importance of obtaining and maintaining normal values of the serum phosphorus level to achieve successful weaning. The relationship between maximum inspiratory pressure and the patient's inorganic phosphate level is presented (r = .97; p less than .01).
