[The role of prolactin in endometrial lesions].

The Authors examine serum levels of HPRL in basal conditions and after TRH and sulpiride test in 15 patients with endometrial lesions (hyperplasia) and in 15 patients with endometrial adenocarcinoma included in a age range between 44 and 62 years, in which 7 patients present obesity, 10 patients present hypertension and 2 patients are hyperglycemic. The same examination is carried out in a control group of 30 healthy patients. Then the 15 patients with adenocarcinoma and 3 patients with adenomatosa hyperplasia are subjected to surgery and they estimate HPRL levels in endometrium. The results prove that there is no correlation between HPRL plasma levels and endometrium lesions and between endometrium HPRL. The Authors conclude that HPRL does not play a significant role in the pathogenesis of endometrial lesions; use of HPRL plasma levels as a marker of endometrial lesions is not possible.

[Endometrial carcinoma with simultaneous endometrioid carcinoma of the ovary. Report of two clinical cases].

The paper reports two cases of simultaneous endometrial carcinoma and endometrioid carcinoma of the ovary. The clinical and pathological characteristics are examined. Both patients underwent radical surgery with an intraoperative examination for metastatic involvement of the lumbo-aortic, iliac and infundibulo-ovarian lymphonodes. Surgery was followed by antiblastic (cisplatin, adriamycin, cyclophosphamide), hormonal (progestogens) and immuno-modulating (thymostimulin treatment). The two patients (respectively approximately 10 and 7 years after the operation) both enjoy good health.

[Carcinoma of the vulva. Report of a case originating from Bartholin's gland].

A case of vulvar carcinoma arising from Bartholin's gland is described. At admission the patient showed a large suppurated swelling of the left labium maior. The neoformation reached the groin of the same side. Malignant cells were detected in biopsy specimens of both the vulvar swelling and the lymphonodes. The histological test showed a vulvar carcinoma arising from Bartholin's gland. The vulvar swelling and the ulcerated lesion were removed and the patient was treated with radiotherapy, chemotherapy (bleomicina) and immunomodulant therapy (Timostimoline). Pulmonary methastases were detected eighteen months after the operation and the patient died two years later.

[Carcinoembryonic antigen in genital infections caused by HPV].

The immunohistochemical search for the carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) was positive in 28.14 per cent of the cases of plane cervical condylomata, in 25 per cent of the cases of infections of the vulva by HPV, and in up to 40 per cent of the cases of cervical or vulvar lesions. These data are in accordance with those reported in the literature, even if the number of cases studied is too limited to enable us to make a significant comparison. As a result, the CEA might prove to be a useful marker for a more accurate biological and chemical classification of genital lesions by HPV.

[Determination of squamous cell carcinoma antigen in the blood of patients with cancer of the uterine cervix].

The RIA method has been used to assay the squamous cell carcinoma antigen in the serum of twenty-four patients suffering from cervical cancer. The results obtained showed expressive differences between the levels in women with metastatic relapse and in those in remission, but the SCC antigen is particularly useful in the therapeutic monitoring, since it can assess of the current treatment.

Thyroid hormones in the human pregnancy.

Radio-immunologic T3, T4, FT3, FT4, rT3, TBG and 17 beta-estradiol were measured in women in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy, during labor, and during the first 14 days of the puerperium. A group of women suffering with gestosis EPH were also investigated. Our data suggest that in women suffering with gestosis EPH and during labor in normal pregnancy there is a T3-selective defect (low T3 syndrome) in which the conversion route of T4 into T3 is inhibited while the conversion route of T4 into rT3 remains fully operative, resulting in low plasma levels of T3 and FT3 and normal levels of T4, normal or high levels of FT4 and high levels of reverse T3.

Influence of bromocriptine on plasma prolactin, human placental lactogen, beta-HCG and steroid hormones in early human pregnancy.

To study the role of prolactin in the regulation of the production of 17 beta-oestradiol, HPL, beta-HCG, progesterone, testosterone, delta 4-androstenedione and 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, 20 healthy women were given 5 mg of bromocriptine daily for two weeks between 7-9 weeks of normal pregnancy. Plasma HPRL, HPL, HCG, oestradiol, progesterone, testosterone, delta 4-androstenedione and 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone levels were measured before and one and two weeks after the start of bromocriptine-application, and they were compared with those examined in control groups (18 women). Bromocriptine induced a significant HPRL depression at one week and two weeks. Other hormones, except progesterone, showed no significant differences between two groups. These data suggest that neither maternal hypoprolactinemia nor bromocriptine during normal early human pregnancy interfere with the normal synthesis of sex steroids.

Morphology of the aprismatic enamel: a SEM study of different etching.

Using the SEM, 55 longitudinally sectioned deciduous teeth were examined. The specimens were treated with a 37% solution of phosphoric acid and subsequently subdivided into groups in order that they could undergo etching for 1 min., 2 mins., 1 min. + 1 min. A minimal change was obtained with an etching time of 1 min., while an etching time of 2 mins. produced large porosity and deep, evenly distributed fossae. No important differences were seen following intermediated washing.

Prenatal echographic diagnosis of ovarian cyst in a female fetus.

The Authors have diagnosed in antenatal age, by echogram, an ovarian cyst in a female fetus. After birth the newborn was operated. After laparotomy the surgeons found a cyst of the left ovary with this size: cm 9 x cm 11, whose weight was g 400 and with a liquid content. Therefore the Authors point out the validity of the echography in case of congenital fetal abnormalities.

Hysterosalpingography and laparoscopy in the study of infertile women.

The Authors confront the data obtained from HSG and laparoscopy carried out in women with sterility problems to evaluate the diagnostic validity of each one of these investigations. There is agreement between the results of both methods in 74.19% of the patients. They think that, for a conclusive evaluation of the tubal factor in infertility, laparoscopy is most useful.

Fetal prolactin levels and respiratory distress syndrome.

Prolactin levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in cord blood of infants between 28 and 40 weeks of gestation. Also infants, whose mothers received betamethasone prior to delivery, were examined. Between 33 and 36 weeks, the mean plasma cord prolactin levels in infants who developed RDS were significantly lower than HPRL levels in those infants who did not develop RDS. These findings suggest that betamethasone did not alter HPRL levels and point out the possibility of a role of prolactin in fetal lung maturation.

Ultrasound placental study and fetal lung maturity.

This study was undertaken to ascertain the usefulness of placental development ultrasound study in prediction of RDS. We examined 96 women near term of pregnancy; the accuracy of placental maturity grades in predicting fetal lung maturity was compared with lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio and with clinical development of RDS in the infants. We observed good correlation among ultrasound placental grades and fetal maturity.
