Effect of dithiocarbamate-type chemicals on the nervous system of rats.

Neurotoxic effect of some dithiocarbamate- and thiuram-disulphide-type chemicals as well as CS2 were examined on rat brain and behaviour. A significant reduction of the orientation hypermotility and at the same time a depression of the subcortical EEG activity were observed. The biochemical assay showed a decreased re-formation of norepinephrine. It is suggested that the inhibition of DBH enzyme may be involved in the delayed psychosedative effect, but not in the short-term electrophysiological changes.

[A case of congenital cystic intrahepatic bile duct dilatation (Caroli syndrome) treated with hepato-lobectomy].

The authors report a successful hepatolobectomy of Caroli's disease (segmentally dilatated intrahepatic bile ducts). They also give a survey of congenital and acquired bile duct dilatations, with a view to differential diagnosis and medical treatment. When Caroli's disease is suspected, echography and ERCP can be a valuable diagnostic aid. The definitive cure i. e. the elimination of the anatomical basis of recidive cholangitis, can only be achieved by the resection of the liver containing the dilated intrahepatic bile ducts. Postoperative administration of antibiotics and anticholelithic drugs can help the liver to full recovery.

[Differential diagnostic possibilities of the liver and bile duct cysts (author's transl)].

The authors examined the diagnostical possibilities of the liver and bile duct cysts with different origin. On the base of the literature and own experiences surveyed the specific signs and the diagnostic value of peritoneoscopy, liver biopsy, scintigraphy, angiography, gray-scale ultrasonography, ERCP and PTC in the hepato-biliary cysts. GSU is the most suitable method to demonstrate the cystous character, but the connection with the biliary tract can be verified by ERCP. Peritoneoscopy is the best procedure in the diagnosis of the polycystic liver; the congenital liver fibrosis can be recognized by biopsy, only. The hepato-biliary cysts can be separated preoperative with the parallel adoption of these methods, in the majority of cases.

Diverticulum of the bile duct. Diagnosis by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and ultrasonography.

Diverticulum of the bile duct is a rare disorder having the lowest incidence among the congenital dilatations of the biliary system. The abnormality was recognized preoperatively in two patients by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and ultrasonography. Data from the 24 cases so far reported have been reviewed and the clinical features. diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities discussed.

[Ultrasonography in liver echinococcosis (author's transl)].

The presence of daughter cysts within the original cyst is a typical feature of cystic echinococcus disease. Due to this, a reliable (preoperative) diagnosis by ultrasonography alone can be made when demonstrating these daughter cysts - as shown in 2 exemplary cases, verified by serology and histology.

[Diagnostic value of ultrasonography in aneurysm of the abdominal aorta (author's transl)].

A case of aneurysm of the abdominal aorta is presented. The clinical picture was suggestive of a pancreatic cyst, but the correct diagnosis was made on abdominal ultrasonography. Early diagnosis of the condition allowed removal of the aneurysm and implantation of a femoral by-pass. The value of ultrasonography in diagnosing aneuryms of the abdominal aorta is discussed. This completely safe procedure appears to supersede the reliability of invasive methods as a diagnostic tool and is recommended in cases of doubtful aneurysm since with early diagnosis and surgical intervention severe complications, including rupture, can be avoided.

Effect of Met-enkephalin and (D-Met2,Pro5)-enkephalinamide on the adenylate cyclase activity of rat brain.

Among opiatelike peptides, stimulatory as well as inhibitory effects are encountered on adenylate cyclase activity. These actions are dependent not only on the investigated brain region but also on the applied peptide. Met-enkephalin stimulates adenylate cyclase activity in the rat brain stem (D-Met2, Pro5)-enkephalinamide and beta-endorphin inhibited it, whereas all three peptides inhibited the activity of cortex. Naloxone antagonized the effects of the applied peptides in the presence of sodium chloride.
