Crusted (Norwegian) scabies with adult T-cell leukemia.

Crusted (Norwegian) scabies occurred in a patient with adult T-cell leukemia. It was not noted at the time of hospital admission. Scabies should be included among the opportunistic pathogens in immunocompromised hosts.

Malignant lymphoma in the Miyazaki district: analysis of 237 biopsy cases.

Pretreatment biopsy specimens of 237 consecutive patients with malignant lymphoma, who presented to us from 1979 to 1982, were reviewed and reclassified. According to the new classification proposed by the Lymphoma Study Group of Japan (LSG), there were 226 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) which was further classified as diffuse lymphoma (216 cases), follicular lymphoma (4 cases), mycosis fungoides (4 cases), and others (2 cases). The 216 cases of diffuse NHL were subdivided into small cell (2 cases), medium-sized cell (71 cases), mixed (7 cases), large cell (92 cases), pleomorphic (40 cases), lymphoblastic (3 cases), and Burkitt's type (1 case) lymphoma. Cell surface marker studies using conventional methods were performed on 65 NHL patients, of whom 45 showed T-cell marker and 11 B-cell marker, and 8 had neither marker. The average survival periods were 13.1 mo for 107 patients with NHL, 27.9 mo for those with mycosis fungoides and 70.0 mo for 10 patients with Hodgkin's disease. Patients with adult T-cell leukemia survived for an average of only 5.5 mo. Histologically diffuse pleomorphic type had the worst prognosis. T-cell lymphoma appeared to have a poorer prognosis than B-cell lymphoma.

The inhibitory effect of dilazep on in vivo accumulation of platelets onto the damaged aorta in rabbit. II. Morphological analysis.

The inhibitory effect of dilazep on platelet adhesion and aggregation onto the damaged aorta was morphologically investigated using an animal model of thrombosis in which polyethylene tubing was inserted into the rabbit aorta in order to injure the intima. Rabbits were divided into 2 groups, control and dilazep-treated groups. The aortas 60 minutes after insertion of tubing were examined by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. An amount of adhered and aggregated platelets onto the exposed subendothelial surface of the aorta in rabbits pretreated with dilazep 100 micrograms/kg was significantly less than in control rabbits. Fibrin formation was also sparse in the mural thrombi in dilazep-treated group compared to that in control group. The results show that dilazep has the definite inhibitory effect in early mural thrombogenesis following the endothelial denudation in rabbit.

Preparation of monomeric Fab'-horseradish peroxidase conjugate using thiol groups in the hinge and its evaluation in enzyme immunoassay and immunohistochemical staining.

Horseradish peroxidase and Fab' were conjugated by using thiol groups in the hinge of Fab'. Maleimide or pyridyl disulfide groups were introduced into peroxidase by treatment with N-succinimidyl 4-(N-maleimidomethyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylate or N-succinimidyl 3-(2-pyridyldithio)propionate and were allowed to react with thiol groups in the hinge of Fab'. The conjugates were obtained in high yields with a minimal polymerization and without impairing the activities of peroxidase and antibodies, and were superior to those prepared using amino groups of Fab' by the glutaraldehyde and periodate methods in performing sandwich enzyme immunoassay and immunohistochemical staining. The conjugate yield was higher in the maleimide method than in the pyridyl disulfide method.

Angiomatous lesions of glans penis.

Two patients with an angiomatous lesion of the glans penis are presented. These lesions are rare and difficult to distinguish from the spongiosum tissue. There is much controversy concerning their true nature, i.e., whether they represent a true neoplasm, herniation of the corpus spongiosum, or vascularization of a hematoma or thrombus. The present lesions were not true neoplasms, but are best described as malformative lesions.

Psychomotor status induced by temporal lobe encephalitis.

A case report of psychomotor status was presented. A 51-year-old male caught a cold and had a high fever at the end of September, 1979. On October 7th, he had a visual hallucination followed by a generalized seizure. After hospitalization he went through several fits of automatism. On October 15th, he was seized with automatism status in which the seizures were repeated every 25 minutes and there was no recovery of consciousness between the seizures. Although an intravenous injection of diazepam interrupted this status, on October 17th he showed subclinical seizure status on the EEG during which automatism traces were rarely found. By the medication of carbamazepine and clonazepam, he improved gradually. CT-scan revealed the disappearance of the right sylvian fissure and CSF showed findings of viral encephalitis. Consequently, he was considered to have been suffering from temporal lobe encephalitis and shown an episode of psychomotor status with automatisms and automatism traces during which typical automatism status was observed as well.

Efficient induction of collagen arthritis by the use of a synthetic muramyl dipeptide.

We developed an efficient method for production of experimental polyarthritis. Native collagen (type II) from human costal cartilage was emulsified with incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA) containing the synthetic adjuvant N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine (MDP), and injected into one hind footpad of the PVG/c rat. This method reproducibly induced severe arthritis with high incidence, whereas the collagen alone in IFA produced mild arthritis with low incidence. MDP alone in IFA was shown to be minimally arthritogenic under identical conditions.

Induction of delayed type hypersensitivity-like skin reaction by peptidoglycans of bacterial cell walls.

Water-soluble glycopeptides isolated from Lactobacillus plantarum and Staphylococcus epidermidis cell walls elicited a delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH)-like skin reaction in rats previously immunized with Mycobacterium tuberculosis cell walls, but not in unimmunized rats. Histological examination of the skin reaction sites in immunized animals revealed a close similarity of this skin reaction to a typical DTH reacton with respect to the time course of development and the types of cells that infiltrated into the skin reaction sites, which were characterized by a predominant infiltration of mononuclear cells at 48 hr. This DTH-like reaction was also demonstrated by immunizing the rats with the cell wall peptidoglycans of L. plantarum or S. epidermidis and skin testing them with homologous as well as heterologous peptidoglycans. The DTH-like reaction appeared to be caused by peptidoglycans that exist in common in the cell walls of phylogenetically distant bacterial species. Furthermore, it was also suggested that the putative antigenic determinants(s) might include both the glycan chain and part of the peptide moieties of the cell wall peptidoglycan rather than either of the single moieties.
