Electro-acupuncture modifies humoral immune response in the rat.

The immunomodulating properties of "Shangqiu" (LP-5), "Ququan" (H-8), and "Rangu" (R-2) points were studied in several experiments performed on male Wister rats treated bilaterally by acupuncture (A) or electro-acupuncture (EA). On the stimulation day 3, the sheep-red-blood cells (SRBC) antigen was injected intraperitoneally and four days later, the immunological tests (plaque forming cells-PFC, direct microhemagglutination) were performed. Also, the relative weights of lymphoid organs (spleen and thymus) and adrenal gland were derived after sacrifice. The results obtained suggest pronounced immunomodulating properties of 200 Hz cathodal current stimulation at H-8 point. The immunosuppression observed reflected in a decreased number of PFC and reduced relative weights of adrenal gland revealed in all A- or EA-treated groups.

The role of trigeminal nerve in acupuncture.

The purpose of this work is to expose the topographoanatomical and functional aspects of trigeminal nerve (TN) on the view of somatotopic representation of acupuncture microsystems, the interaction among the central nervous system, the endocrine system and the immune system via the endorphins and enkephalins. In order to establish the structural and functional relationships between the TN, acupuncture points and zones on the head and neck regions; the following has been done: 1) Identification of number of acupuncture points and zones, comparing with other localization; 2) the analysis of volume of diagnostic and therapeutic indications of about 20,000 patients treating and 662 patients operated by acupuncture; and 3) the analysis of sensory somatotopic cortical representation of the TN. Our research confirmed the role of TN in acupuncture microsystems and we expect it to play this role in the future also.

[Pathohistological study on the effect of various methods of osteosynthesis on the osteogenesis in experimental fracture of the lower jaw].

The lower jaw of 60 dogs was fractured and effects of wire and three variants of chemical osteosynthesis have been followed up concerning validity, course and rapidity of osteogenesis. A wire of 0.4 mm in the diameter was applied in wire osteosynthesis and autopolymerizing acryalte ("Simplex" Galenica) in chemical osteosynthesis with briding of the fracture line interfragmentarily or mixed with bone scrapings. The pathohistological examinations performed 7, 14, 21, 60 and 90 days after the intervention and osteosynthesis employment have shown that there is no difference in validity, course and rapidity of osteogenesis in fractures of the lower jaw under conditions of wire and pure chemical osteosynthesis. Since there is no histochemical obstacles and taking into account advantages of chemical over wire osteosynthesis it should be recommended in fractures of the lower jaw.

[Stomatologic preparation of patients with malignancies of the maxillofacial region for radiation therapy].

A series of 3456 patients with malignant tumours of the maxillofacial region have been treated at the Clinic for Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery of the Military Medical Academy, Stomatological Clinic of the M.M.A. and Radiological Institute of Medical Faculty in Belgrade. The most frequent localization was lips and mucosa of the oral cavity, 77,9%. The irradiation therapy was applied in 42,3% of the patients and combined surgery and irradiation therapy in 28,6% Postirradiation changes of the oral cavity mucosa were found in 25% of the patients, teeth changes in 50% and Candida albicans was found in 56% of the patients. In order to prevent irradiation and postirradiation complications, all the patients with malignant tumours foressen for irradiation therapy should undergo a detailed stomatological examination and sanation of the oral cavity and teeth. The authors advocate team work in establishing the diagnosis and treating in which an important place should have stomatologist.
